As part of our partnership with Fairy Non Bio, we’ve produced the Mumsnet Babies Podcast. There are ten episodes in the series, and so far we’ve released five. Episode four is about health, and you can listen to it here. Fairy Non Bio would like you to listen to the podcast whenever you can and then discuss your experience with commonplace baby health issues.

There’s nothing like the new found responsibility of a brand new life, and it’s easy to let anxiety take over and maybe worry too much when that new little one gets the sniffles. Fairy Non Bio would like to hear about your experience with baby health. So, whether you have experience with coughs and colds, eczema, chickenpox, colic or other minor illness - share your experience below.

What do you ensure you always have in your medicine cabinet to avoid a wild goose chase for an open pharmacy on a Sunday evening? Maybe you have tips for keeping your LO comfortable and yourself sane while they’re unwell, or have advice for dealing with common ailments?

Everyone who posts on the thread will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 Love2Shop voucher.

If you’d like to rate the Mumsnet Babies Podcast, please go to the iTunes store to add a review.

Thanks, and good luck with the prize draw!

Always have calpol and plenty of plasters handy!

HopefulHamster · 13/05/2017 13:05

I try to keep piriton, calpol (or equivalent) and nurofen (or equivalent) in stock. You can go through the liquids very quickly as children get older and require more in each dose, so it's easy to run out.

I also have a bazillion plasters as my kids love them.

Snog · 13/05/2017 13:17

My best tip is to keep an aloe Vera plant in the house and use the sap on burns

bugzie92 · 13/05/2017 13:32

My son had terrible dry skin when he was very young. I found Aveeno creme to be absolutely brilliant! It cleared it up very quickly, and I think it definitely helped his skin feel less uncomfortable.
In our medicine cupboard we always have good old trusty calpol! I definitely wouldn't want to find my child had a fever at 3am with no medicine to help him! And of course, we have heeps of Aveeno to help with his skin (and mine!) at all times!

krankers1982 · 13/05/2017 13:41

My daughter suffered really bad eczema as a baby i didnt have a clue what to use id never experienced it before her cheeks were so bad and sore weeping at one point. Looking through one of my baby packs i got free i found Aveeno cream and i have never looked back id never heard of it before and now my cuboard always has some handy the same as bepanthen with nappy rash i loved the samples i recived my cuboards are full of full sized products now always handy to have in ready the same as changing my soap powder to fairy as the one i used was causing her eczema to worsen x

Anna88888 · 13/05/2017 15:55

We have calpol, saline drops, sudacream, and an in ear thermometer.

Anna88888 · 13/05/2017 15:57

...would also recommend coconut oil for babies dry skin, we use kokoso.

Tean1 · 13/05/2017 16:27

Same as everyone else on the whole - Calpol, Sudocrem, Vicks or the supermarket equivalents which are just the same but cheaper. Also keep an ice pack in the freezer for bumps.

Daisymaybe60 · 13/05/2017 18:32

Yes, we always have the usual basics to hand, and only use the gentlest laundry products,, but I also swear by Weleda calendula bath additives and soothing creams for skincare, and particularly for nappy rash.

Nottheshrinkingcapgrandpa · 13/05/2017 21:10

Sometimes when baby has a high temperature, stripping down to a nappy and using a damp, cool flannel is the only thing taht will work.

Pipstarz41 · 13/05/2017 21:47

For when they gets colds i always have the snuffle Bebe and olbas oil for children, to help with congestion. I also use the calpol vapour plug to help LO breathe. Calpol is of course, a must have!

FoodstuffFinds · 13/05/2017 22:37

We keep a stock of various things like plasters, paracetamol, ibuprofen, savlon, indigestion tablets, antihistamines and mouth ulcer ointment!

WowOoo · 14/05/2017 07:29

I have a children's medicine kit with liquid paracetamol, olbas oil, thermometer, anti itching cream and lots and lots of plasters. I also bought lots of cheap bandages because my youngest can be a bit melodramatic when it comes to very minor injuries.

lucyrobinson · 14/05/2017 07:43

We have calpol, nurofen and a spare asthma pump.

defineme · 14/05/2017 08:17

Always stocked up with Piriton, ibuprofen and paracetomol. Also use menthol crystals in hot water as an inhalent in their room.

ggjacks · 14/05/2017 10:04

Unfortunately my son was very unwell when he was a baby, he had meningitis and ended up in ICU on a ventilator. So it left me a bit neurotic about him being unwell. Consequently my medicine cupboard is very well stocked, the usual calpol, ibuprofen, diarolyte. Also love my digital ear thermometer, whenever a friend has a first baby, this is always what I buy for a gift! Then I have a well stocked glove compartment with first aid plus medicines, plus keep sachets of calpol and ibuprofen in my handbag. Always be prepared is my motto!

BigGrannyPants · 14/05/2017 10:24

Fresh air and sunlight to keep them healthy. With my three I always need cold compresses, plasters, antiseptic cream and calpol, they are forever falling over! My oldest has asthma so we always make sure we have a back up supply of his inhalers too. Best thing when they're under the weather is a duvet, a movie and plenty of fluids!

BigGrannyPants · 14/05/2017 10:28

@ggjacks Flowers for you, my boy twin had meningitis when he was 7 weeks old and we were hours from losing him completely, luckily we have an amazing GP who sent us to hospital despite none of the usual meningitis symptoms and amazing doctors and nurses at the hospital who nursed him back to health. The NHS saved his life no doubt about it. The worst week of my life, we are quite paranoid as well now, especially as we know the symptoms don't always show themselves the way we expect!

user1472646069 · 14/05/2017 10:44

We always have calpol, plasters and arnica cream too for bruises. In addition we have multivitamins.

dirtypop · 14/05/2017 11:08

always have Calpol and sudocrem in the cupboard, they work wonders

ggjacks · 14/05/2017 11:35

@BigGrannyPants yes the worse thing that could ever happen, it's one of those things that you hear of but never think will happen to you. Did your son make a full recovery? Mine has an acquired brain injury which is evolving as he grows up. He seemed to make a good recovery at the time but it became apparent as he was getting bigger that things were not right. It has been a long old journey getting his difficulties recognised and the right support put in place. We were not so fortunate and his diagnosis was missed even though he was in hospital so his treatment was delayed. But I feel fortunate that I still have him

Blondie1982 · 14/05/2017 11:39

Calpol without a doubt

imrankhanpost · 14/05/2017 12:02

Going to GP is a waste of time. Best to keep baby indoors for 2 days. Keep attention to needs and changing sleeping patterns. Cuddle, rest the baby, let baby watch baby tv. Provide drinks as solid food won't go down. Do not let the baby out. Depending on temperature loosen clothing.

PhilTB54 · 14/05/2017 12:08

Good supply of calpol, sudocrem, plasters, & dry skin cream .
Not forgetting the usual children's paracetamol & ibuprofen

mummyto2boys01 · 14/05/2017 17:09

We keep stocked up on calpol and children's nurofen - both always come in handy, especially during the winter and on holidays. :)
