As part of our partnership with Fairy Non Bio, we’ve produced the Mumsnet Babies Podcast. There are ten episodes in the series, and so far we’ve released five. Episode four is about health, and you can listen to it here. Fairy Non Bio would like you to listen to the podcast whenever you can and then discuss your experience with commonplace baby health issues.

There’s nothing like the new found responsibility of a brand new life, and it’s easy to let anxiety take over and maybe worry too much when that new little one gets the sniffles. Fairy Non Bio would like to hear about your experience with baby health. So, whether you have experience with coughs and colds, eczema, chickenpox, colic or other minor illness - share your experience below.

What do you ensure you always have in your medicine cabinet to avoid a wild goose chase for an open pharmacy on a Sunday evening? Maybe you have tips for keeping your LO comfortable and yourself sane while they’re unwell, or have advice for dealing with common ailments?

Everyone who posts on the thread will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 Love2Shop voucher.

If you’d like to rate the Mumsnet Babies Podcast, please go to the iTunes store to add a review.

Thanks, and good luck with the prize draw!

definitely never without calpol, such a blessing to have in for teething bumps and bangs x

TellMeItsNotTrue · 06/05/2017 10:47

By toddler age, a plaster and an ice pop can cure anything from a stubbed toe to a broken arm!

We keep steady supplies of both

burwellmum · 06/05/2017 11:43

Calpol, sudocrem and liquid piriton sort most minor ailments out. Plus a few plaster whch seem to have an amazing placebo effect on young children.

MakeTeaNotWar · 06/05/2017 12:24

I probably over did it when the DC were tiny but as an anxious first time Mum, I had a bathroom cupboard overflowing with Calpol, nurofen, snot suckers, many types of nappy cream and heaps of lotions and potions in case chicken pox struck. Most of these were never used and went out of date so now I've got an ear thermometer, calpol, nurfen, suppositories and arnica. If anyone is poorly, one of us will sleep with them all night to keep an eye

GeekyWombat · 06/05/2017 13:42

We have calpol, sudocrem, ice packs and a plethora of plasters (Peppa Pig, Spider Man, Star Wars and more - depending on the ailment!).

We seem to suffer from sniffly noses and snot more than most (or at least it feels that way!) so we always have Snufflebabe (ridiculous name, great product - basically baby Vicks) and a plug in vaporiser in too. A friend who works in a hospital baby unit told me they put Snufflebabe on the newborn's feet if they get cold and it helps ease the runny noses and we've definitely found that to be the case. No idea of the science of it but putting some on and socks or a baby gro over the top makes for a peaceful night and usually symptoms eased by morning.

It's still a stupid name though!

AlwaysOldBeforeMyTime · 06/05/2017 17:08

Calpol and Vicks get us through most things, and I've just discovered anbesol which is awesome for teething pain (and post filling pain it turns out!)

Poorly days are great for naps, tv and reading. I quite enjoy them so long as it's nothing serious!

BeeMyBaby · 06/05/2017 17:16

We have an antibacterial cream for DS's eczema, if we didn't have that we would use olive oil. It tends to be brought on by various brands of bath soaps and I make sure I never buy cheap washing liquid so at least I know it's not been aggravated by his clothes.

Whyisitsodifficult · 06/05/2017 18:40

A decent ear thermometer, ibuprofen, paracetamol, piriton, savlon and saline nasal drops!

Summerdays2014 · 06/05/2017 19:33

E45 bath oil for my son who has eczema.

Calpol for everything else.

WinnerWinnerChickenDinner0 · 06/05/2017 20:38

For me there are only 2 things

An endless supply of cuddles from me (long past my breaking point)

And my sister on speed dial to drop by with paracetamol/ibuprofen/ calamine lotion/ antihistamine/ice lollys (and gin for me)

magentastardust · 06/05/2017 22:30

We always have calpol or nurofen sachets in , plasters, anti histimine liquid and Olbas oil . We also have a digital ear thermometer handy after being caught out when dd1 was a baby and find it reassuring when they have a temperature. It is handy to have the essentials in stock and on hand so that you aren't left unable to soothe and help your child through the night if they are unwell.
Also have a basic child first aid booklet in with the medicines with instructions on dealing with CPR,choking, burns , convulsions etc..I am sure common sense would kick if any of these things happend..but again it feels reassuring knowing it is there for reference.
Lots of snuggles and cuddling up on the sofa with a favourite film also seems to work wonders for poorly little ones!

GoodyGoodyGumdrops · 07/05/2017 01:39

Savlon is amazing. We call it Wizard Cream. Sure, it's a good antiseptic cream, but it's real power is the smell: as soon as the dc smell it, they know everything's going to be all right.

WheresTheCoffee · 07/05/2017 06:46

What do you ensure you always have in your medicine cabinet?
Calpol, Ibuprofen, Piriton, Vaporub.

It's so hard when they are little to help them to understand their aches and pains so we often try to keep them entertained/distracted with TV, stories or a drive if their up to it.

CherriesInTheSnow · 07/05/2017 09:34

Yup, as everyone said you need the basic supplies before baby is born. It might not occur to you to yet Calpol hut immunisations start very early. Also saline drops to clear stuffed up tiny noses as they don't breathe through their mouths at that age. We were lucky and didn't have many illnesses in th first year but they alays get poorly after immunisation's!

allthingsred · 07/05/2017 10:24

We have the usual plasters wipes. Calpol & ibuprofen. Also have Pirton. Arnica (my rugby loving son & daughter it's a must)

legfaced · 07/05/2017 19:00

Calpol and baby ibuprofen plus all the cold remedies - snufflebabe, olbas oil for babies, and the snot sucker!

vickyors · 07/05/2017 20:04

We always keep stocked up with calpol, tissues, bepanthan bottom cream, eczema cream as my girls struggle with this, and arnica. Man, we use so much arnica! And we usually have some antihistamine liquid (piriton) as my youngest little one can have allergies..

CheeseAtFourpence · 07/05/2017 22:00

We have a thermometer, plasters and E45 and that's about it. DD is rarely ill and if she is it tends to be a cough/cold, so in those cases we prop her pillow up. Calpol is rarely used - there's probably a bottle in the cupboard.

Alexandra87 · 07/05/2017 22:11

We have Vicks to go on feet when they have a cough with socks over - works wonders.
I do have calpol somewhere but rarely use it dc3 has had it once and he is 2.
I use the thermometer all the time.
Plasters which get requested for the tiniest little scratch but stops the tears so I'm not arguing.
Metanium fantastic for nappy rash.
Omega 3 supplements.
Think that's it. My dh thinks he's dying every time he sneezes so we have way way more for adults

georgedawes · 07/05/2017 22:22

We have a decent thermometer, calpol and nurofen, and that's about it really. Saline drops helped a bit for colds when she was smaller, also nappy cream and bonjela were used a lot!

Livis87 · 07/05/2017 22:27

We have plenty Calpol. Antihistamines. Plasters and a couple of reusable cool patches which live in the freezer full time.

KAKADU2001 · 07/05/2017 22:29

Mainly things like plaster as we tried our best not give medicines such as calpol etc to our young ones.

hmariez · 07/05/2017 22:30

We're stocked up on calpol, teething gel, antiseptic cream, plasters and general first aid stuff. Also have a thermometer which comes in handy x

maryandbuzz1 · 07/05/2017 22:38

We always had calpol in our medicine cupboard. ...which is a Godsend. Anbesol to rub on sore gums was also very handy.
However we were always kept awake and worried as when my son was unwell he would get an asthmatic cough which was always very distinctive. This would necessitate using a puffer to relieve the symptoms and we both found it quite frightening. However as he has got older these symptoms have thankfully disappeared,

Lisapaige24 · 07/05/2017 22:39

I always keep paracetamol , ibuprofen ,piriton, antiseptic cream ,a first aid kit , Dioralyte and a thermometer in the medicine cupboard for when my children are sick.

Always have a spare Duvet, a hot water bottle, a flannel, plain biscuits, flat lemonade and bottled water as well as Disney channel on stream.
For those days your kids are sick these are essential in my household.
