As part of our partnership with Fairy Non Bio, we’ve produced the Mumsnet Babies Podcast. There are ten episodes in the series, and so far we’ve released five. Episode four is about health, and you can listen to it here. Fairy Non Bio would like you to listen to the podcast whenever you can and then discuss your experience with commonplace baby health issues.

There’s nothing like the new found responsibility of a brand new life, and it’s easy to let anxiety take over and maybe worry too much when that new little one gets the sniffles. Fairy Non Bio would like to hear about your experience with baby health. So, whether you have experience with coughs and colds, eczema, chickenpox, colic or other minor illness - share your experience below.

What do you ensure you always have in your medicine cabinet to avoid a wild goose chase for an open pharmacy on a Sunday evening? Maybe you have tips for keeping your LO comfortable and yourself sane while they’re unwell, or have advice for dealing with common ailments?

Everyone who posts on the thread will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 Love2Shop voucher.

If you’d like to rate the Mumsnet Babies Podcast, please go to the iTunes store to add a review.

Thanks, and good luck with the prize draw!

Calpol, it's essential - and plasters, for that cut you can barely see under a magnifying glass

MrsDramaQueen · 07/05/2017 23:00

My kids are quite often coming down with illnesses. I also suffer from a low immune system due to long term illnesses, so it's important that I can try and contain any illnesses. I always have Calpol, nurofen and Piriton in the cupboard for the kids. I also have travel sickness tablets, as my daughter needs them for any journey over 30 minutes. We have plasters, antiseptic spray and cream. I also keep sudofen about because it's great for so may different things. My son also gets eczema behind his knees so we have Aveeno and a hydrocodone cream from the doctor. My daughter has also got adult teeth coming through so we have bonjela too. I also have plugins with a decongestant mist in them, so that when the kids have colds I can use them. I can't put the rub in on their clothes or pillows because it makes their eyes water.

Calamine lotion for chicken pox is an godsend for this itchy monster... Plus we make sure we NEVER run out of cough mixture! :D

freefan · 07/05/2017 23:16

In our cabinet we have calpol, teething gel and sudocreme, these are my essential items :)

AngelwingsPetlamb · 07/05/2017 23:24

We always have Calpol, Vicks or easy breathe drops, Sudocreme and a thermometer.
Just make sure baby is hydrated even if they are off their food, keep watering!
Try to regulate temperature with layers and regular medicine. Keep stimulation to a minimum.

Sid98 · 07/05/2017 23:30

I have a stock of paracetamols and piriton

compy99 · 07/05/2017 23:40

we always make sure we have a first aid kit, Calpol, Salvon and a thermometer readily available. When not well try to make have lots of fluids and quiet times.

Hopezibah · 07/05/2017 23:44

Our must haves are an in-ear themometre, calpol and ibuprofen in the cupboard, a room themometre, selection of bedding to use lighter weight bedding if my child has a temperature.

Worrying times have been croupy cough and needing to sit up with them through the night, steaming the bathroom to ease the cough, as soon as they lie down end up vomitting as cough so bad.

We often call for advice if unsure on 111 because its always safer to get things checked out if worried.

I let them drink things like ribena when unwell as the priority becomes getting fluid in them rather than worrying about sugar content at that particular time.

LeeR1985 · 07/05/2017 23:46

I always have calpol, luckily my daughter rarely gets sick and when she does its just a cold so don't need anything other than that usually :)

moosexxx · 08/05/2017 06:34

We alway keep childrens medicine in the cabinet. At least one paracetmol and one ibuprofen based one.
As well as these we keep various plasters, bonjela, stepsils, etc.

When ill is usually a case of dosing them up, taking it easy (either putting them in bed, or letting them collaspe on the sofa) and giving them time to recover.

janeyf1 · 08/05/2017 06:56

We have a cupboard virtually dedicated to Calpol, plasters, talc, calamine lotion and vicks,

renas · 08/05/2017 07:01

Always make sure you have calpol in your cupboard. It's first port of call when your child starts feeling unwell with throat, ears, temperature.

barbsbarbs · 08/05/2017 07:10

when my son was three months old, I couldnt believe it when I found him covered from head to toe with chicken pox, they were everywhere. I didnt think young babies could catch chicken pox. He also had an ongoing temperature and it lasted about two weeks. Then when he was six he caught shingles which is also unusual for a young child but if a child under one gets chicken pox then they are more likely to get shingles early too. He still bears the scars and it must have been really itchy for him but not being able to scratch the spots.

thesockgap · 08/05/2017 07:50

My kids are not babies any more but I still tend to keep the same medicines etc in stock as they are still useful - paracetamol / ibuprofen suspension, cough medicine, vapour rub, antihistamines etc. They always come in handy.

phillie1 · 08/05/2017 08:08

Calpol and Ibuprofen are the 2 essentials - give them something every 2 hours when it's at it's worst

suzyq50 · 08/05/2017 08:14

Liquid ibuprofen & paracetamol & Olbas oil for steam & a few drop on a tissue.

Children tend to bounce back from sickness quickly so just TLC & a cold flannel on the forehead for hot temperatures seems to do the trick.

AnimalAddict · 08/05/2017 08:26

We always have calpol, plasters, ibuprofen & antiseptic cream on hand :)

Ganne1 · 08/05/2017 08:39

Just be prepared. Perhaps with the first baby it can be a little tricky to anticipate impending ailments, but the second should be a breeze - you just know what's going to go wrong! Hopefully ...

vonniebab2 · 08/05/2017 08:43

I always keep essentials calpol plasters painkillers etc we live a few doors from a pharmacy that is very convenient in an emergency

southernsun · 08/05/2017 08:52

We always have Calpol and Sudacreme in our medicine cabinet. Most things can be sorted with these two things.

juju3 · 08/05/2017 08:58

Calpol - seems to work for most minor problems

finleypop · 08/05/2017 09:01

Olbas oil for stuffed noses, Paracetamol suspension, plasters, antiseptic spray

ThemisA · 08/05/2017 09:04

My baby son had croup which is pretty frightening. I didn't have a steamer so boiled a kettle in a small toilet and the steamy air soon sorted him out.

I always have Calpol, antihistamines, antispetic cream, plasters, bandages, a small toy to take their minds off whatever injury they have sustained.

Carlieling · 08/05/2017 09:10

I always have the usual calpol , ibrufen, piriton , Vicks but also I swear by the calpolplug ins for my girls.really helps with night times when they have the sniffles.

daydreambeliever21 · 08/05/2017 09:14

Calpol and Nurofen for children in the medicine box. Also plasters and dressings and either Savlon or Germolene. I always make sure I have plasters, tissues and wipes in my bag as well.
