It’s the season of holidays and day trips, and that means long car journeys where we have to keep the DC happy. One of the best ways to keep the DC as well as ourselves cheery on a long journey is to make sure we are armed with plenty of snacks. Whether you go for snacks that make the least mess or those that keep the little ones quiet for a while, Soreen would like to know your top snacks for long car journeys.

Here's what Soreen has to say: “Our Lunchbox Loaves - or ‘Glovebox Loaves’ Grin - are individually wrapped, healthy and best of all they don’t make crumbs! So are ideal for in-car snacking whether you’re heading to the countryside or the zoo. Available in Malt and Banana flavour with a satisfyingly squidgy texture, Lunchbox Loaves are individually wrapped, low in fat, contain only 95 calories and provide a source of fibre.”

So what are your tips for the snacks you take on car journeys? Do you chop up fruit and veg into small pots? Perhaps you have special treats just for car journeys? Or purely go for convenience? Whatever snacks you take with you, share them below and one Mumsnetter will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck.

We tend to eat our snacks/packed lunch service stations during long car journeys, and don't do that much in-car eating. If they do, probably something like an apple, Hula Hoops or raisins, and a juice carton or bottle of water to drink. The inside of our car is not a pretty sight...

Whether it is a short trip to the park or a long journey to visit family I nearly always pack boxes of raisins, some sort of children's cereal /oat bar, and a tub of crackers / breadsticks/ rice cakes / oat cakes. Always some water too.
I do want to be healthy but find fruit & veg can get messy.

Supermam · 16/04/2017 16:55

Healthy-ish bars such as Goodies or Nakd. Also Welshcakes, occasionally.

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 16/04/2017 17:48

When DS was a toddler, I used to give him a box of raisins as it would take him hours to dig each raisin out, one by one...

My son gets terrible car sickness if he doesn't eat little snacks often, so we always go equipped! I do a little lunch box of little snacks - such as scotch eggs, mini sausage rolls, sandwich fingers and bread sticks. He will tell me when he wants them, he tends to have a little something every 45 minutes or so on long journeys.

Sammyislost · 16/04/2017 17:58

Mini cheddars! Less messy than crisps. Doesn't melt. Car snacks became harder since we got a new car!

emmamcmahon · 16/04/2017 18:45

Mini packs of biscuits, cereal bars, sweets, crisps, fruit. Only for long journeys though!!

hungryhungryhippos · 16/04/2017 19:56

Cherry tomatoes and grapes!

mummymummums · 16/04/2017 20:52

I go for convenience - boxes of mini muffins, bags of popcorn, etc. Sometimes bananas 🍌🍌🍌

MrsFrTedCrilly · 16/04/2017 22:15

We don't tend to snack in the car unless it's a very long journey and we anticipate getting stuck in traffic.we bring apples bananas occasionally the lunchbox loaves or something similar. We always have bottles of water and very very occasionally we have some sweets!

Flapdoodles · 16/04/2017 23:41

I only pack snacks for long journeys/days out but would take drinks (juice or water), crisps, fruit, biscuits (in individual packs as less messy).

Pinkypierainbowdash · 17/04/2017 00:05

Mine like bacon baps cold so i always make them to eat in the way with crisps and fruit .

Cartons of juice i decant in to sports bottles befor we go

Then we have a few sweets on the way as part of the travel games

I tend to have odd snscks in the car, usually whatever is on offer in the supermarket! but typically breakfast cereal bars and baked crisps/snacks.
If it's a long journey, I want to keep everyone satisfied and not have to stop at the rip-off services so I would pack: individually wrapped breakfast cereal bars, easy peel clementines and bananas, Kettle crisps, biltong or jerky, maybe some sweets and lots of water. Smile

ButtonMoonLoon · 17/04/2017 09:31

I only let me daughter have snacks in the car that I consider to be safe, so unlikely to be a choking hazard, well less likely than some snacks.
Cucumber and melon sticks and strips of cut pepper feature quite often, as do bags of mini bread sticks. We've bought packs of the mini soreen loaves before but they aren't as moist as the normal sized packs, so I now just buy the big loaves as usual, cut them up and pack them to b snacked on.

Water sweets i.e. midget gems keep my gang going.

kaycm25 · 17/04/2017 09:56

We usually pack some snacks for longer journeys. Usually flavoured water for the kids and some fizzy juice for me and my husband. We also usually have bananas and a packet of crisps each. I think it breaks up the journey a bit.

TattyDevine · 17/04/2017 11:50

Anything that goes with my car-wine Grin

mo3733 · 17/04/2017 11:56

i love crudites and dips nice and tasty and healthy

Rae1000 · 17/04/2017 12:44

If it is a shortish journey I don't "do" snacks I am afraid. On a longer journey (2 hours or more) I do now pack a big bag of sweets now the kids are older. Additionally a packed lunch is normal too! When they were younger it was fruit & a little tupperware of cheerios as a treat! We all love soreen though & we love the banana soreen too!!

Ikea1234 · 17/04/2017 13:21

We take a selection of snacks and also play games with them to pass the time. For example, apples - who can eat it in the most (or least!) number of bites? (Most is best as it takes longer and therefore keeps the kids occupied for more time😉)
Either fruit pastilles or boiled sweets - who can make theirs last the longest? No chewing!
Wotsit crisps - if you lick them, they then stick to another Wotsit, so you can have Wotsit modelling competitions!
You can't beat Soreen for no mess, no crumbs, but we haven't found a game to go with that yet!

MichaelSheensNextDW · 17/04/2017 14:40

I put together small savoury and sweet clicklock containers for each child. When my daughter was tiny we discovered that allowing her to nibble during journeys actually prevented her from being carsick. I make finger sandwiches, lightly buttered malt loaf fingers, crackers and little portions of cheese.

ActuallyThatsSUPREMECommander · 17/04/2017 14:49

I make peanut butter sandwiches. Nothing tricky, just crunchy PB on best of both bread. Then I cut them in half and shove them in ziplock bags. They're not delicious or interesting but they're nutritious, edible, cheap, filling and don't need to be chilled. But because they go in a bag rather than a box they always end up squished flat, which gives them a very particular texture. DS revealed recently that he thought they were special sandwiches made of special bread that you could only get on journeys.

hareagain · 17/04/2017 15:07

No dairy as it smells bad when thrown back up with travel sickness. Something carby washed down with fruit to refresh negating the need for too many toilet stops
.

Dormouse1940 · 17/04/2017 15:51

Water in sports/sippy bottles to avoid mess.
Snacks are very limited for the kids- nothing sticky, or that will generate melted mess or crumbs...I've always really wary of choking hazards in the car so I tend just to take those plain heinz finger toddler- biscuits for the little one and only then if we're stuck in traffic and need something to keep him going for a little while.
If the journey's that long I'd rather we got out at a services and ate properly...

(for me and his dad though, we often sneak sweets in the front- sssh don't tell anyone)

FirstTimeMummy25 · 17/04/2017 16:00

My DS loves the lunch box loafs
