It’s the season of holidays and day trips, and that means long car journeys where we have to keep the DC happy. One of the best ways to keep the DC as well as ourselves cheery on a long journey is to make sure we are armed with plenty of snacks. Whether you go for snacks that make the least mess or those that keep the little ones quiet for a while, Soreen would like to know your top snacks for long car journeys.

Here's what Soreen has to say: “Our Lunchbox Loaves - or ‘Glovebox Loaves’ Grin - are individually wrapped, healthy and best of all they don’t make crumbs! So are ideal for in-car snacking whether you’re heading to the countryside or the zoo. Available in Malt and Banana flavour with a satisfyingly squidgy texture, Lunchbox Loaves are individually wrapped, low in fat, contain only 95 calories and provide a source of fibre.”

So what are your tips for the snacks you take on car journeys? Do you chop up fruit and veg into small pots? Perhaps you have special treats just for car journeys? Or purely go for convenience? Whatever snacks you take with you, share them below and one Mumsnetter will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck.

Apples, bananas, crisps and a flask of water. I have recently rediscovered fidgety rolls too, which are great for snacking on long journeys.

EvilDoctorBallerinaDuck · 15/04/2017 21:11

We take pigs in blankets, sausage rolls, strawberries and oaty bars.

emmmaaa26 · 15/04/2017 21:19

We just grab whatever but I know it could be healthier.

mamof3boys · 15/04/2017 21:42

I only pack snacks on a long journey and it's usually some crisps and biscuits. Not very healthy!

scrivette · 15/04/2017 23:11

I always have a couple of packs of raisins in my bag, but going on a longer journey I make sure that I have bottles of water, cut up grapes or blueberries and something individually wrapped like a brioche.

I don't like them to be eaten whilst driving though.

GillianY1 · 15/04/2017 23:33

If I'm stuck in the car for hours with the kids I would take cakes, biscuits, raisins, juice and crisps to keep them quiet.

Lapinlapin · 15/04/2017 23:44

Nothing too messy!

And depends on how long the journey is.

Usually on longer journeys we'll take water bottles and things like the Bear fruit yoyos or school bars.

Rice cakes! Can just brush all the crumbs out resulting in a clean car seat. Grin

  1. Grapes and strawberries - great finger food and not too messy
  2. Baby sandwiches cut into quarters, with a range of fillings such as cheese or houmous
  3. Soreen banana lunchbox loaves - we love the banana-bread flavour!
  4. Homemade oat cookies (pictured). They're crumbly and a bit messy but worth it because it keeps the kids satisfied for a long time, they're very filling.

a few biscuits

Andbabymakesthree · 16/04/2017 07:49

Sorry to be a bore but we don't allow eating it in the car as it's a choking risk and we can't stop the car safely. We do of course pack picnics if we are going anywhere and will eat in the car if bad weather ( children love it)

Cheese ,crackers, crisps, pasta . If my children liked Sorren then they would be a good snack.

cwalliss82 · 16/04/2017 08:35

I like things that are individually packed - either how I buy them or me making tubs of individual portions. If we have a big bag of something then somehow it all gets eaten. An individual sized portion will take the hunger away without over-eating.

DS1 (5 years) is autistic and a bolter, so service station stops are avoided like the plague.. We stock up on sandwiches, rice cakes, crisps and breakfast bars.. Bottles of water are a must, but try to minimise how much we drink as we can't stop for loo breaks!!! For obvious reasons the longest journeys we do are in the 2-3 hour range.

AnimalAddict · 16/04/2017 09:42

Bottles of water or juice, with maybe some packets of biscuits or a packet of fruit :)

IncaAztec · 16/04/2017 10:11

Always a few snacks- bananas, bottled water, fruit bars, Soreen (my youngest likes Soreen the most). If it's a long journey, I like to be able to give them a snack if we are delayed or go somewhere they haven't liked the food at!

strawberrisc · 16/04/2017 11:32

I only pack snacks for long car journeys. My daughter loves Malt loaf - I buy the original, spread it with margerine and cut it into 'soldiers'. We also take baked, healthy crisps, raisins and a sugar-free drink (with a lid on). I have a couple of large lunchboxes with divider compartments which store the snacks.

Spirael · 16/04/2017 12:08

We tend to go for mini Cheddars. They last for ages and keep well in the varying car temperatures. They also don't make a huge amount of mess, and anything they do create is easy to brush away or vacuum up.

Also, DD1 gets travel sick but finds if she eats something dry then it helps ease the symptoms and prevents her from throwing up. Not sure that squidgy fruit loaf would help! I bet they're great for lunch boxes, however.

chrismse · 16/04/2017 12:25

We have a don`t eat in the car rule. We do pack a picnic to eat at a stop if its a long journey.

Passmethecrisps · 16/04/2017 12:26

Being pregnant and spending the first trimester feeling very sick unless eating I genuinely had Soreen mini loaves in the glove box.

We also keep oat cakes and dried fruit.

For very long journeys we would tend not to snack on route but rather stop. Any nibbles would be cereal bars and fruit

RhubarbAndMustard · 16/04/2017 12:29

We don't have snacks in the car due to the choking risk. Plenty of snacks for day trips though as my 4 year old is always hungry. He doesn't like the texture of malt loaf though- sorry!

user1490522234 · 16/04/2017 13:19

Kinder eggs are a must !

PrimalChic · 16/04/2017 14:32

If we are taking a long car journey, I feed the kids in the car and then when we stop, it's for toilet breaks and running off some energy. If we stopped for food as well, it would double the length of the stop! Favourite foods for car journeys are:

Pita pockets (fewer crumbs)
Small boxes of raisins
Sticks of raw veg
Banana chips and seeds mixed in small Tupperware

Pretty much anything that can be contained in a small box and isn't sticky! And never chocolate because two chocolate crazed kids strapped into a hot car on a long journey is my idea of hell!

And a drinks bottle that doesn't leak!

Elliepurpleflower · 16/04/2017 15:35

Mine have Soreen, bananas, rice cakes - they keep my kids happy for a while!

Marg2k8 · 16/04/2017 16:18

Just a drink. Try to plan long journeys so little ones are asleep.

pinkspideruk · 16/04/2017 16:30

We dnt eat in the car - if we have a long journey we either plan to stop somewhere for food or we take a picnic and stop at a rest stop to eat - we get a bit of motion sickness so eating and travelling doesnt work but also dont like food being dropped all over the car seats they get minging
