It’s the season of holidays and day trips, and that means long car journeys where we have to keep the DC happy. One of the best ways to keep the DC as well as ourselves cheery on a long journey is to make sure we are armed with plenty of snacks. Whether you go for snacks that make the least mess or those that keep the little ones quiet for a while, Soreen would like to know your top snacks for long car journeys.

Here's what Soreen has to say: “Our Lunchbox Loaves - or ‘Glovebox Loaves’ Grin - are individually wrapped, healthy and best of all they don’t make crumbs! So are ideal for in-car snacking whether you’re heading to the countryside or the zoo. Available in Malt and Banana flavour with a satisfyingly squidgy texture, Lunchbox Loaves are individually wrapped, low in fat, contain only 95 calories and provide a source of fibre.”

So what are your tips for the snacks you take on car journeys? Do you chop up fruit and veg into small pots? Perhaps you have special treats just for car journeys? Or purely go for convenience? Whatever snacks you take with you, share them below and one Mumsnetter will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck.

I usually make a packed lunch for the kids for a longer journey to keep them occupied and try to choose items that are less likely to make mess. Individually wrapped snacks are perfect

phillie1 · 17/04/2017 17:36

Snackerjacks and water - nice and plain and easy to hoover up afterwards

Greenfingeredfun · 17/04/2017 17:37

Excited about these bars! Love malt loaf but have issues slicing it - without squashing it! In car snacks for us include cereal bars, fruit and water

debbiew21 · 17/04/2017 17:48

I don't take food, except sweets to suck now mine are older. Pack lots to drink though.

librarypictures · 17/04/2017 19:06

Sorry but don't allow food to be eaten in my car as it is still new to me - bought it in January and it is immaculate. If we want something to eat we stop at services or a cafe. I do allow bottles of water. Gosh I sound really uptight but I really love my car and want to keep it looking good.

farhanac · 17/04/2017 19:08

Try to avoid eating in the car as much as possible.

1969angep · 17/04/2017 19:35

We usually have a bag of dried mango slices (and perhaps a slightly less healthy bag of Haribo lol). On longer journies we may also have crisps or popcorn

After seeing soreen bars on mumsnet, I tried them as a car snack. Quite nice.

Most things are fair game in the car - fruit, sandwiches, veg sticks, crackers. It's messy, but better than having to stop with a grumpy toddler. But only if I'm sitting in the back with DS. If I'm driving alone I would t give him anything as worried about choking.

sbruin1122 · 17/04/2017 20:20

Usually a bag of sweeties until we get to a service station :P

Maclairey · 17/04/2017 20:51

I dont pack snacks for the car as such as usually they will have had a good breakfast and maybe a banana before we leave. If we are going out for the day then I usually pack a lunch for the children which will include sandwiches, fruit, crisps, maybe some biscuits or cheese and crackers. I rarely let them eat in the car though, unless its absolutely necessary.

princesssmitheee · 17/04/2017 21:38

always fruit, apples, pear etc

Thistly · 17/04/2017 22:20

Whatever happens to be in fridge.
When kids were little we used to stop for a picnic somewhere. Now they are bigger we just have a toilet stop and they can have a snack in the car. Frankly getting packed up and ready to go is such a hassle that it usually crashes into a mealtime so the poor blighters are hungry by the time we set off so a snack is a godsend.

I challenge my passengers to cut up and share out a melon while I am driving, or feed spaghetti bolognese to the toddler. With utter lack of disregard to the upholstery. I might try the kids with malt loaf... I used to like it although I preferred it with a generous scrape of butter, so perhaps not as 'low calorie' as it might be.....

I love snacks on a journey. Bottled water, boiled sweets as I get car sick.

annandale · 18/04/2017 07:33

Well this explains why our car looks so awful as we usually go the full 70s in it - sandwiches sausage rolls crisps apples hard boiled eggs squash. That would be for a full on trip as in 5 hours plus. Luckily none of us get car sick. I am potentially open to new snacks but the classics seem like enough at the mo.

Bechoole · 18/04/2017 09:20

Kids loving little Hob Nob bars at the moment, I just pop one or two of those in

Gemmaleanne19 · 18/04/2017 10:07

Normally just do a pack up with sandwiches and crisps etc

Reow · 18/04/2017 10:16

Marmite sandwiches!

Granola bars, bottles of water, smoothies.

katkatgu · 18/04/2017 11:03

individually wrapped snacks like Soreen are great to grab in a rush as is always the case for long journeys and also means that waste is limited.

angiehoggett · 18/04/2017 11:21

I have a cool bag handy with sandwiches and plenty of water. I try not to give them food in the car and wait until we stop anywhere before we eat anything but keeping them hydrated is the main thing.

Stacywatson88 · 18/04/2017 11:26

If we are having what we call a car picknik.. i usually have little sandwiches not forgetting to cut the crusts off, we dont need a major crust drama on the move. The kids love ginger bread men and chewing their heads arms and legs of takes up a fair bit of time, so they are always added. Sausage rolls the little party ones are a big favourite, And theres always a bag of haribo to share for pickies before or after lunch.. if were doing a mega long journey we normally do stop at a services. But the kids love a car picknik, just like i did when i was little grandma used to make us pump sandwiches (egg tomatoe and mayo) lol loved them back then but cant bear the thought of them now ha.

DBhatt14 · 18/04/2017 12:29

I always bring a pack of mini biscuits Smile

nettymay · 18/04/2017 13:01

We stop at service stations now to give the driver a rest and to stretch our legs. We do however always have bottles of water and fruit in the car in case of breakdown

Pmliu · 18/04/2017 13:15

we take crisps, biscuits, raisins and diluted juice drinks to keep them going

colleenw · 18/04/2017 13:22

I always take a packed lunch for the entire car full - rarely stop at services it's busy, and over priced and full of fast food which isn't good for anyone.

Fruit, cherry toms and cucumber in a pot. A sandwich or wrap. Rice crackers with spread are a big hit. And to finish off they have a small bag of chocolate or sweets they've chosen beforehand.

littlepooch · 18/04/2017 15:06

Fruit fruit fruit. It's what my 17 month old loves. Generally blueberries, chopped Apple, chopped strawberries. She only drinks water.

I am a bit paranoid about her choking so only let her snack if it's s longer journey and someone is sat in the back. She has a tendency to stuff about 12 blueberries in her mouth at once as she loves the, so much. For shorter car journeys where it's just me and her I don't bother with snacks.

On a separate note I love Soreen and have it in my packed lunch on my working days!
