Hello, hello, hello… It is I, Count Olaf – guardian of the Baudelaire orphans Violet, Klaus and Sunny, and magnificent and respected theatre performer.

Violet is the eldest; she is followed by Klaus, and then Sunny, who is an infant. I have provided these lucky orphans with a rat-infested room - including a complementary pile of rocks at no cost to them, and shampoo that encourages tears - and I believe, therefore, that I am quite justified in asking them to do a range of minor chores for me in return.

My list includes:

  • Keep the kitchen gleamingly clean
  • Keep the library well dusted
  • Polish the floors in the ballroom
  • Hang my undergarments in the laundry room after they've washed them
  • Weed, mow, and preen the gardens
  • Chop wood in the back yard

Alas, these wealthy brats have been utterly spoilt! They've never done a chore in their lives, and therefore believe that I am BU to ask them to carry out such tasks - which is why, my adoring MNer fans, I wish to ask you: which chores you wish you could ask your DCs to do?

I feel your anguish having to spend more time with your DCs since it’s half term, so what chores do you wish you could ask your DCs to do during half term? Would you like your moody teenager to be able to whip up a Michelin star meal? Or your toddler to not only put away their toys, but also hoover the lounge? Whether it’s something small like wanting your DCs to do the washing up or make their own beds, or something more elaborate like wishing they would Marie Kondo your wardrobe or build you a garden retreat, tell me, Count Olaf - and I will reward one of you with a £300 voucher.

Yours most handsomely,

Count Olaf

Would be nice to have the house tidied up ready for the next onslaught

hiddenmichelle · 11/02/2017 09:32

I do not want much......flushing the toilet and putting the rubbish in the bin would be amazing alone!

Ganne1 · 11/02/2017 09:34

Be good ... always!

amyhalliday1 · 11/02/2017 09:35

Cleaning the bathroom!! I hate it !! X

shellywkd · 11/02/2017 09:36

I would love my daughter to do some chores especially the easy ones like helping sort the washing and tidying her room. The problem is she has an awful cold and cough so is laid up ill so I will let her off this time.

maryandbuzz1 · 11/02/2017 09:48

Making his own bed everyday would be a start! Putting away everything that is hidden under the bed, too.
Bringing the wood in for the wood burner from outside and clearing the grate out.....without getting ash everywhere!
A spot of decorating wouldn't go amiss.

Catmadroo · 11/02/2017 10:14

tidy up the christmas toys that are still sitting on the lounge floor, this does mean tidying up his room and deciding which old toys can go first

queenoftheschoolrun · 11/02/2017 10:53

My chimney needs sweeping...

Annieg1234 · 11/02/2017 10:53

My kids are terrible with chores, its like ive asked them to climb mount Everest when i ask them to take the recycling out!
So i'd choose my battles and go for the small wins like helping do some dusting or sort out their art cupboard! Also might try and get a cup of tea or two!

warjonson · 11/02/2017 10:55

Help with the cooking, best way to teach healthy eating.

thesockgap · 11/02/2017 11:05

Plan and make all the meals for the week.
Scrub the bathroom from top to bottom - with a toothbrush.
Change their own sodding bed linen!

123hartley123 · 11/02/2017 11:05

baby sit

Eblessing · 11/02/2017 11:06

I would love it if my DC could walk our dog once in a while but unfortunately she isn't quite strong enough to hold the pooch safely!

emmav6 · 11/02/2017 11:13

i would just love it if they would play nice together all day and put away each toy once they have finished with it!! i'm dreaming....right? :(

compy99 · 11/02/2017 11:22

change the beds, this would be a huge help,, i am forever getting tangled up inside the super-kingsize duvet cover

Teatowelfairy · 11/02/2017 11:24

Clean all the pee off the toilet seat and bathroom floor after they use the loo, they have a nasty habit of standing as far away from the loo as they can and trying to hit the target!
Find all the odd socks lying around, wash them and pair them up neatly.
Pick up the rubbish lying on the kitchen floor after they have missed putting it in the bin.
Clean the oven and fridge. Defrost the freezer.
Change the baby's nappy.
When they've finished one can give me a facial, one can massage my feet and the others can make tea.

clairemelvin · 11/02/2017 11:25

I would love if the could do the laundry, even just the ironing would make me very happy!! Also, keeping their rooms tidy and putting their dirty dishes in the dishwasher when they're finished with them.

PurplePenguins · 11/02/2017 11:32

Tidy their room. It's a bomb site within 10 minutes. Teenagers arrrggghhh 😊

kaycm25 · 11/02/2017 11:35

I would love to get them to do the ironing. I HATE it, a horrible job.

winterpark · 11/02/2017 11:42

I would love my boys to do the cooking all week and wash up after :)

Bekksy · 11/02/2017 11:49

Look away look away
Look away look away

That screen will wreck your evening
Your whole life and your day
Every single console game is nothing but dismay
So look away, look away, look away

The half term break is here and it's time to have some fun
Perhaps you could even take the dog out for a run
Your rooms are oh so messy they could do with a deep clean,
perhaps a little bit of studying would help to set the scene

Just look away, look away, look away
Else there's nothing but screens and boredom on the way
Ask any stable person "should I login?" and they will say
Look away look away, look away
Look away look away look away
Look away look away look away

rainbow1976 · 11/02/2017 12:19

I just wish my daughter would do the chores she is already supposed to do without me nagging! The ironing would also be great but I really wouldn't trust her with that

towser44 · 11/02/2017 12:19

We have several things to do at the moment, including boarding out the loft to store some of our daughters toys and games, landscape the area we have created for her trampoline and create base for and then erect her wooden summerhouse. If our daughter could do that I would be ecstatic!

spottypjs · 11/02/2017 12:30

I would love them to make the dinner haha

PorridgeAgainAbney · 11/02/2017 12:34

My son (almost 4) loves helping out, but it would be lovely for him to do all the chores and I could behave the way he does:

When he makes the bed, I'll jump on it and 'hide' under the fitted sheet then have a panic attack when I feel a bit trapped.
When he hoovers, I'll follow him round turning it on and off, stepping on the wire, turning it down to its lowest setting so it picks up sod all and dropping my snack behind him.
When he cleans the bathroom I'll help by washing the sink and somehow cover a 2m area each side of the sink with whatever gunk might have been on my hands before I started.
When he puts his favourite clothes in the wash, I'll turn the temperature dial up so everything comes out a little bit too snug for him to wear anymore.
When he takes care to put the recycling in the right bin, I'll helpfully offer to scrape the leftovers off the plates...and slop it all on top of the recycling.
Sigh.
