We’ve been asked by Sheilas' Wheels to find out what Mumsnetters want from their Car Insurance policy.

They say "we appreciate that Car insurance isn't something you think about every day, however, should you need it you want to know everything is covered."

So what would be your ideal car insurance policy? Should it include a number of complimentary car washes each year? Any extras to keep your family safe when motoring?

Whatever you’d like from your car insurance policy, Sheilas' Wheels would love to hear your thoughts and ideas. Who knows, you could help shape the future of car insurance?

Everyone who posts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 Love2Shop voucher.

Thanks,

I want renewal prices to be lower when you are a loyal customer....mine just seem to increase every year despite not making any claims!

PegsPigs · 04/01/2016 19:07

I'm about to renew and this would be my perfect policy:

Fair price which isn't only offered to brand new customers but to those renewing.
Courtesy car if you make a claim whether it's your fault or not while it's being repaired. Or a car for a month if it gets written off.
NCD protected if you get hit by an uninsured driver.
Optional but competitive breakdown cover.
Clear delineation between voluntary and compulsory excess.

HitsAndMrs · 04/01/2016 19:40

Discounts each year instead of the price going up for no reason. An easy online way to access policy documents, email the insurance company and create a quote online.

icehousewin · 04/01/2016 19:48

Helpful customer service. A good price. Not being bullied into taking out add-ons.

xaphan77 · 04/01/2016 20:27

price is important but more for me would be the service you receive if something happens meaning you need to make a claim!

Hedgeh0g · 04/01/2016 20:54

In no specific order:

  • decent courtesy car policy
  • replace car seats like for like, no cap on the amount you can claim (£100 often doesn't touch the sides for an ERF car seat)
  • discount for more than one car
  • please don't treat me like an idiot and increase my premium tons at renewal because I am no longer a new customer. I am fed up of ping ponging between 2 car insurers because this happens every year.
arat · 04/01/2016 20:56

the biggest thing for me is some loyalty for existing customers - ie getting the best price when it comes to renewal, rather than having to compare with other companies, then calling up to haggle

HollybearFluffpuss · 04/01/2016 21:09

I would like a reasonable price without massive jumps at renewal. I want easy to understand paperwork without jargon and confusion. Stress free contact, not press 1 for x , press 2 for x etc etc....

romanrainsalot · 04/01/2016 21:17

Its been said a lot already, no silly price hikes for existing customers. I am pig sick of it, they all do it. Reward loyalty, people talk positively about it, their friends will follow suit. I was with one insurer for 7 years before they tried to charge me an extra £400 per annum, for no reason. Surely 7 years worth of custom is worth more than 1? Again, reward loyalty - I have car home and travel insurance with the same company because they are easy to deal with, UK call centres, easy online access to policies.

No I do not want silly gimmicks like free car washes Hmm or handbag cover or a free nail varnish! I'd like an insurance policy that genuinely is designed with women in mind. Whether they be working women, working mums, stay at home mums, all of us are time pressured and so hanging on the phone for hours to an overseas call centre or policy documents that are 100 pages long are not helpful. Include breakdown cover, make it easy to ensure more than one car - all bar one insurer wanted me to get two quotes to do this...I haven't got all day to faff, filling in endless online forms.

Also a big bugbear - on comparison sites but also some insurers, when you enter your details, things you want included e.g. NCD etc, when you come to quote price, it seems really low, like a good deal, but then you realise, despite having selected NCD, courtesy car, MLP etc, you have to select these again and the price goes up. So a competitive deal is not what it seems. If I select these things, give me the price with these on, don't make me do the same piece of work twice please.

I do not want a monitoring box in my car - invasion of privacy.

No silly admin charges for things such as changes to a telephone number mid-policy.

HeadDreamer · 05/01/2016 09:01

I just want a competitively priced policy, with no hidden surprises. When it comes to claiming, it should be easy. A phone line that you can get through. A courtesy car when your own car is in the garage and cannot be driven.

cathpip · 05/01/2016 10:58

No hidden nasties such as and I quote "a named driver on your policy can't make a claim against your policy" esp 5 months after an accident that the insurance company were well aware off and they knew who was involved straight away. Yes you Sheila's Wheels, you are this company...........

LinnyBee · 05/01/2016 12:58

Low excess
Easy claims procedure
Competitive price
No automatic renewal
Clear and concise terms and conditions
Great customer service
Peace of mind

It always seems to take so long to change suppliers of car insurance, it's no wonder many people automatically renew!

Ethan260908 · 05/01/2016 16:57

No gimmicks. I don't want to have to subsidise other people's policies. Sort out the issues about crashing for cash and reduce premium's.

windowmouse · 05/01/2016 18:18

I want it to be straight forward to make a claim and a good value premium. Also a courtesy car and good updates when my car is in being repaired.

Ikea1234 · 05/01/2016 19:29

An easy claim process, and a company that will fight your corner if need be, rather than encourage you to settle 50-50, even if the other driver was in the wrong.

surgeoner · 05/01/2016 21:04

I want to be out no extra expense if my car is off the road through no fault of my own - a courtesy car without any hassle

selloveday · 05/01/2016 22:31

I would really like my insurance company to show some loyalty and offer a competitive renewal quote, rather than me having to keep switching companies and them then wondering why I'm leaving.

bringans · 05/01/2016 23:18

Simple, to not always mess you around when you need to claim. And not treat you like you at fault from the offset till you can prove its not !

Annbunce · 06/01/2016 10:28

The best possible price, fair excess and excellent care

Fillybuster · 06/01/2016 12:41

Honesty, pricing transparency and a renewals process that doesn't require a ridiculous need to shop around and renegotiate every year. Plus I would really like to be able to put all our cars onto a single policy with one provider, which recognises that we have different people, with different levels of experience, driving different cars.

jodiecrossley1 · 06/01/2016 15:12

no jargon and fair prices!

MillyVanilli222 · 06/01/2016 15:56

A good price, convenient support and a courtesy car that supports my needs.

melski1989 · 06/01/2016 16:07

Easy to understand terms and conditions!

justgina · 06/01/2016 20:05

Just making a claim easy and straightforward because it's usually such a stressful ordeal!

emmav6 · 06/01/2016 22:16

EASY BULLET POINT INFORMATION ON WHATS INCLUDED AND EXCLUDED IN THE POLICY
