We’ve been asked by Sheilas' Wheels to find out what Mumsnetters want from their Home Insurance policy.

They say "we appreciate that Home insurance isn't something you think about every day, however, should you need it you want to know everything is covered."

So, is it better cover levels that you look for? Perhaps it’s more confidence in your provider's service or maybe something to keep your family safe when you take out a policy?

Whatever you’d like from your Home Insurance policy, Sheilas' Wheels would like to hear them.

Everyone who posts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 Love2Shop voucher.

Thanks,
MNHQ

I have been lucky enough never to have had to use this - but would like to think that if I experienced anything so bad that I need to claim it would be completed quickly and efficiently.

kimnews · 26/12/2015 22:03

I want a reasonable price and a contents cover that protects me as a tenant - with legal cover and personal items included as standard.

littleme96 · 26/12/2015 22:22

Renewal quotes that reward loyalty, not ones that are increased for no reason.

UK call centres which don't have premium rate numbers to call.

Low or no admin fees for things like name changes.

Adjustable voluntary excess.

FlukeSkyeRunner · 26/12/2015 22:44

UK call staff with free number.
Clear policy with less small print.
Competitive pricing.
Access to policy details and ability to make amendments online.

compy99 · 26/12/2015 22:49

transparent wording, still too many exclusions in small print. also a quick turnaround on any claims

kathcake · 26/12/2015 23:51

A straightforward policy where they don't hide any get out clauses in the small print

slbhill42 · 27/12/2015 00:06

High level of contents cover (the standard isn't enough if you have expensive hobbies!) but at a reasonable premium and excess.

pockledigg · 27/12/2015 04:51

UK call centre.
Charges based on my claims history.
No 'auto renew'.
Lower charges for existing customers-show some loyalty!
Good customer service.

Generation1979 · 27/12/2015 09:31

Uk call centres. Easy to read policies.

Http · 27/12/2015 10:31

A policy that is easy to understand in plain English so I link exactly what I'm getting.

A reward or incentive to join the policy eg vouchers etc

VaseandCandle · 27/12/2015 11:37

Like I said on the car insurance thread, competitive renewal quotes and a smooth claims process. If I am ever unlucky enough to have to claim on home insurance, I'm sure the last thing I would need would be a difficult insurance process

beckyinman · 27/12/2015 12:22

Genuine discounts, more personalised quotes and options to pay interest free over the year

Marg2k8 · 27/12/2015 13:13

Peace of mind.

lexy444 · 27/12/2015 13:40

Left a home insurance company once because they refused to cover my blind relatives tandem bike (which was on loan from a local society from the blind) it was valued at 4k which exceeded their any individual item value on my policy. We tried to persuade them that a tandem bike for the blind which couldn't even fit in a van was hardly high priority for theft but to no avail.

I look for a simple policy with a nice easy to follow website.

easter1965 · 27/12/2015 15:14

To have external cover on the items in sheds and garages on the same policy is so important, we also had problems with expensive camera equipment having to be insured seperate as it was taken outside the house which put us off, 2 lots of payments wasn't on for us we needed everything in one Policy

assurance, security, and no hidden nasty surprises

jwjuliejulie · 27/12/2015 16:00

Peace of mind that the company would pay out - there are so many horror stories these days of insurance companies refusing to pay. Must be devastating when you have lost everything (those poor people devastated by floods) - I live near a river and it worries me.
A nice straight forward policy that is easy to understand would also be good! :-)

samcornfield · 27/12/2015 16:06

I would like to be able to talk to a human person on the phone who is actually able to make decisions. I would also like cheap prices and decent cover without unnecessary extras

flamingtoaster · 27/12/2015 16:23

UK call centre with freephone number.
If you have a claim one member of staff to deal with it all the way through.
No claims bonus.
Competitive transparent pricing without large increases for excluded items.

Clairescottshug · 27/12/2015 16:34

No silly excess amount
Freephone number
Quick action when making a claim

EmNix · 27/12/2015 17:07

A good level of cover, loyalty and no claims discounts.
Easy contact by phone and email.

Acorn44 · 27/12/2015 17:45
  • Reward customer loyalty
  • Don't charge extra for a bike (unless perhaps it's worth over a certain amount?)
  • Don't charge extra for customers who need to pay in monthly instalments
  • Be open about what counts (and does not count) as 'accidental damage'
  • Have phone lines open beyond Mon-Fri 9-5
  • UK call centre
  • Phone access which doesn't involve having to go through a series of menus
  • If you go through an automated identification/security process whilst waiting in the phone queue, don-t repeat the whole thing again when the operator actually answers the phone
  • Let people know how long the phone queue is or how long the wait will be, roughly - perhaps even with the option of you phoning the customer back.
winterpark · 27/12/2015 18:46

A simple policy process, good rates and a UK call centre.

sweir1 · 27/12/2015 19:23

something straight forward without clause after clause
