Old Mutual Wealth has asked us to find out the best pieces of advice Mumsnetters have ever been given.

Here’s what they say, “Old Mutual Wealth is a big advocate of advice. In life and in financial matters, the guidance of someone you trust can make the difference between failure and success.”

So, what’s the best piece of advice someone's given you? Maybe someone has shared a genuinely life changing tip? Perhaps they passed on the secret on how to get your kids to clean their room/go to sleep/eat their greens. We’d also, more specifically, like to hear about the best financial piece of advice you’ve ever received. Whether it’s on how to save? Or maybe on what to do with your savings? Whatever they are, we’d love to hear them!

Everyone who posts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 Love2Shop voucher!

Thanks

In terms of life advice - it's a quote from Roald Dahl which stayed with me from being a kid..
'A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.' :)
All my financial advice comes from my Dad & it's always sensible, always I don't always follow it.
He advised me not to spend money I don't have, to save a minimum of £25 each month & to keep a record of EVERY bit of money I spend. I always do the latter, struggle to do the former & never do the one in the middle!! I know it all makes sense though.. & I tell myself that when LO leave nursery & I can stop forking out £750 pm on fees - that's when I'll start saving :)

Never go to sleep on an argument. And don't be afraid of bringing up a difficult topic if it needs to be discussed.

My best piece of advice was 'Be yourself no matter who that may be' it is such wonderful advise as I was never really happy until I just started to be me with the world

GeorgeW78 · 14/10/2015 02:38

Is it more important to be right or happy?! They often go hand-in-hand for me but I know what they meant!

princesssmitheee · 14/10/2015 03:42

you wont be happy in a relationship until you are happy within yourself first

suzyq50 · 14/10/2015 08:38

waterlily200 · 14/10/2015 09:46

When I was little and had to endure something frightening or difficult, my Dad would always say: "Remember that every minute that passes is a minute closer to this being over." It gave me courage then and still does today. I say it to my husband and little boy now as well.

monty79 · 14/10/2015 10:21

Treat people how you would want to be treated yourself.

Stoodles · 14/10/2015 10:41

When I was learning to drive with my wise old grandma, she always said "Overtakers are the first to the Undertakers" She also said that "the car is a lethal weapon" and so in her very direct way she instilled in me the importance of driving safely and carefully. To this day, I am always very cautious when over taking vehicles and never rush into it without careful thought and I drive carefully. My grannie's words have really stuck with me all my life.
Another thing she always said was "A stitch in time saves 9" and it's so true, if things (not even just sewing) don't get fixed the minute they start to break, then it always gets way worse and way harder to fix in the long run! I do miss my grandma as she always had a lot of old fashioned sayings that made a lot of sense.

My Mum told me the following when I first left home & managed my own finances " ENJOY spending your money, but AVOID wasting it!"
I have lived by this motto for over 30 years & there is a serene pleasure in knowing your money is wisely spent & not wasted - after all its hard enough to earn!

If you don't use something you've bought within a year, its time to pass it on!

my best piece of advice was from my mum , and that was trust your own instincts , especially when it comes to your children , you know them best and be prepared to fight for them , something that really rung true when we found out my son had autism

frances93 · 14/10/2015 11:42
