Old Mutual Wealth has asked us to find out the best pieces of advice Mumsnetters have ever been given.

Here’s what they say, “Old Mutual Wealth is a big advocate of advice. In life and in financial matters, the guidance of someone you trust can make the difference between failure and success.”

So, what’s the best piece of advice someone's given you? Maybe someone has shared a genuinely life changing tip? Perhaps they passed on the secret on how to get your kids to clean their room/go to sleep/eat their greens. We’d also, more specifically, like to hear about the best financial piece of advice you’ve ever received. Whether it’s on how to save? Or maybe on what to do with your savings? Whatever they are, we’d love to hear them!

Everyone who posts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 Love2Shop voucher!

Thanks

Manners cost nothing.
Be nice to people.
Sometimes you're not the issue, someone else is.

Crown · 12/10/2015 18:50

Trust in yourself and don't be afraid to make mistakes.

nettymay · 12/10/2015 19:32

Be kind to animals and care about the environment

daisyduck123 · 12/10/2015 19:36

Believe in yourself and never worry about anyones negative opinions.

clarejw24 · 12/10/2015 19:44

Save the nagging for the really important things!

vixxx666 · 12/10/2015 19:46

write your worry down in a notebook and lock it. look at it the next day and decide if it was worth worrying about. if not rip the page out and burn it - worry gone!

Kem99 · 12/10/2015 20:08

That when it comes to work, you are only as good as the last thing you do. You can be flawless for years but one mistake and that is all people remember.

myusername12345 · 12/10/2015 20:16

Take out a mortgage based on one salary, then you know if one of you has to stop work you can still manage.

strawberrisc · 12/10/2015 20:17

As clichéd as it sounds, "Be Yourself". It may take years to really learn to to be able to do so but then everything else falls into place.

Kangakate · 12/10/2015 20:27

On life in general - hope for the best, but prepare for the worst

mave · 12/10/2015 20:31

Always look on the bright side of life!

sarah861421 · 12/10/2015 20:38

do unto others etc. what goes around, comes around

Maclairey · 12/10/2015 20:38

Don't ever take anything for granted. Your life can change dramatically overnight.

My bff who is 33 years old has just been diagnosed with breast cancer Sad

arat · 12/10/2015 20:46

The best advice I ever gt from my mum was to look after number one and don't worry about what anyone else thinks. If it's right for you, thaht's what counts!

littleme96 · 12/10/2015 20:47

If possible, live on one wage before you have children to enable you to have the choice of whether to go back to work or not afterwards.

From a childcare point of view - trust your instincts and there is no such thing as making a rod for your own back.

shivbrown · 12/10/2015 20:58

My mum always said this to me "Have the courage to live a life true to yourself, not the life others expect of you."

And i now give the same advice to my children x

cocochips · 12/10/2015 21:00

Never let anyone put you down

pinklady123456 · 12/10/2015 21:03

Always put family first rather than work - work is a fleeting thing but family is forever.

BeautyQueenFromMars · 12/10/2015 21:05

Never speak in anger - wait until you've calmed down.

barker99 · 12/10/2015 21:11

Trust your instincts. I think that advise saved me from multiple problems

freefan · 12/10/2015 21:13

Always trust your first instinct and be true to who you are - this is the best piece of advice ever given to me by my great aunt when I was a teenager. So far it has stood me in good stead.

dragon60 · 12/10/2015 21:21

Not to worry/stress - the advice I was given & which works is simply if you have a worry - if you can do something about it, do it. if you can't forget it. Takes practise

kittykomp · 12/10/2015 21:26

to be myself

lindseypie · 12/10/2015 21:31

"Look left, indicate left" (from my driving instructor) I hear it in my head every-time I go around a round about.

PennyPants · 12/10/2015 21:34

Best advice was -

you can be miserable or happy- it's the same amount of work
