Old Mutual Wealth has asked us to find out the best pieces of advice Mumsnetters have ever been given.

Here’s what they say, “Old Mutual Wealth is a big advocate of advice. In life and in financial matters, the guidance of someone you trust can make the difference between failure and success.”

So, what’s the best piece of advice someone's given you? Maybe someone has shared a genuinely life changing tip? Perhaps they passed on the secret on how to get your kids to clean their room/go to sleep/eat their greens. We’d also, more specifically, like to hear about the best financial piece of advice you’ve ever received. Whether it’s on how to save? Or maybe on what to do with your savings? Whatever they are, we’d love to hear them!

Everyone who posts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 Love2Shop voucher!

Thanks

This too will pass - stood me in good stead through many a tough time.

Comparison is the thief of joy. Keeps me from being dissatisfied with my lot -which many people would be overjoyed to have.

Never doubt your instincts - they will get you through those hard times

rainbowvalley · 12/10/2015 21:38

If at first you don't succeed - try try again.

Don't count the days, make the days count

HoneyDragon · 12/10/2015 21:46

Don't let financial failure put you off taking further risks later on in life. Learning from your mistakes and trying again is better than living with regrets that you never tried.

We took this to heart hauled ourselves through a long and difficult road and this time were successful, it could still all go wrong but at least we did it.

Happyjad · 12/10/2015 21:47

Look after your feet because without them you won't be going far!

LizB62 · 12/10/2015 22:07

Follow your instincts - you know more than you think you do !

To always see the bigger picture, this advice has helped me out many times over the years, instead of jumping to a conclusion or going off on a tangent, I really do try to look at all angles and all possibilities and consequences before making an important decision or comment.

Treat other how you would like to be treated yourself

Gilliancollins78 · 12/10/2015 22:29

My mum always told me "Whats for you won't go by you"

TLAF · 12/10/2015 22:58

When you are about to lose it - take a deep breath

avery64 · 12/10/2015 23:00

From Grandma who we lived with during my early years - If you want something pay for it or do without until you can save for it. This referred to my pocket money but it has stuck with me through life and it has served me well. The only debt I have ever had was a 25 year mortgage that by overpaying was paid back more than 5 years early (much to my relief) :)

be yourself

In general, live in the now! My mum always used to say this to me, and it's definitely come in useful recently for my daughter who is very much overthinking her future at the moment. One step at a time, take each hurdle as it comes, there is no rush.

Financially, just to learn the value of money I guess. Know how to maximise how much you have so you don't overspend where you don't need to. Worked especially well for food shopping, we never waste anything and save a whole lot of money in the process.

lhlee62 · 12/10/2015 23:20

Save as much as you can for a rainy day, I wouldn't have a house if I hadn't.

ProfYaffle · 12/10/2015 23:21

From my Dad: "Bullshit baffles brains" and "It never rains in a pub". I've lived my whole life by these pieces of advice! Grin

matphil · 12/10/2015 23:27

To stop worrying about what other people think and just live your life as you want.

oliveoyl72 · 12/10/2015 23:49

My dad used to say 'shy bairns get no sweets', and he was right, you need to speak up and go for what you want, it won't just land in your lap.

thekiwibex · 13/10/2015 00:22

Stop worrying about what other people think of you!

samosh22 · 13/10/2015 00:42

Stay positive and be happy

"Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, you're probably right".

Bellroyd · 13/10/2015 05:54

Be yourself. Don't follow the herd. Trust in your own instincts and don't rely on anyone else.

pusinky · 13/10/2015 06:37
