We've been asked by the team at Sainsbury's to find out how Mumsnetters put a twist on their favourite midweek recipes.

Sainsbury's say "As a nation we cook over 5 billion midweek meals a year - and Sainsbury's is passionate about offering great quality, everyday food to inspire households that are cooking the meals that matter to Britain. The store cupboard is a goldmine of interesting twists in waiting. With more ingredients available than ever before, now is the time to reclaim the store cupboard and start experimenting!"

So, how do you put a twist on your favourite recipe? Maybe you add balsamic vinegar to a pasta bake? Or perhaps you add some chilli to a shepherds pie? Maybe you've even added peanut butter to a stir fry?

Whatever your top twists are for your weeknight meals, Sainsbury's would love to hear about them. Take a look at the Sainsbury's Homemade website for inspiration and to see what twists they've suggested.

Everyone who posts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one winner will receive a £300 Sainsbury's voucher to spend in store or online at sainsburys.co.uk.

Please note your comments may be included on Sainsbury's social media channels, and possibly elsewhere, so please only post if you're comfortable with this.

Thanks and good luck,

I like to put mustard or cheese in my mash for a treat.

Recently discovered a meal that may not be for everyone. Found purely by chance based on the contents of my cupboard and freezer. Fish Fingers cooked, then covered in condensed celery soup, baked in oven with salted crisps on top, delicious!!!

I make a spicy vegetarian shepherd's pie with chillies to liven it up

I use spinach a lot and add it to soups, curries and pasta dishes. Also, cream cheese, sour cream, mayonnaise, cheese, herbs and spices can "perk up" any pasta/pouring sauce and add flavour to otherwise fairly bland every-day dishes.

I add Creme Fraiche to our fish pie to make it extra creamy and the kids love it!

Tuna Pasta Bake, withy delicious cheesy sauce is a favourite of ours as it's healthy, tasty and very filling.

To give the meal a bit of a twist, I sometimes add salsa, or chopped tomatoes, onions and mushrooms. Delicious tasting with interesting texture.

I add barbecue sauce and Piccante peppers to my spag bol. I used to add loads of Sainsbury's finely chopped frozen veg mix (onion, celery, carrot) too but you've bloody discontinued them according to our local store. Thumbs down Sainsburys! I used to buy 3 or 4 bags a fortnight as they were brilliant for curries, mice - everything! I have one precious bag left which I'm hoarding.

I also add mustard or horseradish to mashed potato and when I make 'chips' in the Actifry I make them with chilli oil, garlic granules and paprika for colour and flavour.

Always add a different spice to what I normally cook to give an extra touch. Simple, quick and lean!

lolarabbit · 19/09/2015 10:29

Smoked salmon trimmings go a long way and I particularly like to use them to make an alternative carbonara (instead if the bacon) or to liven up a basic cheese pizza.

voyager50 · 19/09/2015 10:32

I mix cream cheese in with left over mashed potato and stuff it into peppers with a bit of tabasco sauce. It works really well red pointed peppers!

sm2012 · 19/09/2015 10:39

I like to add fresh herbs to most dishes if I can and I like to put lots of different veggies into sauces for pasta and chicken so the kids actually eat them!

I add crushed chillies to my spag bol for a spicy twist

glennamy · 19/09/2015 12:09

We add many different sauces when preparing meals to give it a unique taste or a bit of a kick. Also add garlic, ginger and herbs... :)

devito92 · 19/09/2015 12:24

Add chrizo to pasta dishes gives it a spicy flavour

jt75 · 19/09/2015 12:34

I add a different herb or spice than I usually use.

finleypop · 19/09/2015 13:12

Weekdays is when I am most busy, so to make sure we have something delicious & nutritious to eat, I rely on my slowcooker. It can be anything form a chicken & chorizo pasta sauce, to a lovely beef stew. I get it prepared the night before, turn it on in the morning & hey presto, dinner is cooked

nettymay · 19/09/2015 13:19

Whatever I am cooking I try to encorporate Avocados somewhere in my dishes because I know the enormous health advantage of them

Catmadroo · 19/09/2015 13:43

one of my favourite homemade dishs is lasagna, my twist is to add mustard to the flour and butter when starting the cheese sauce, adds a lovely tang

chrin · 19/09/2015 13:51

my family know what they like and if I added coffee to bolognese or any other random ingredient to ANY meal they wouldn't eat it and I HATE to waste food

sweir1 · 19/09/2015 14:15

i add worcester sauce to stews to give it a kick

lhlee62 · 19/09/2015 14:37

I put a little bit of chilli powder and vinegar in chilli con carne, the vinegar gives it some zing. I also make the mince go a bit further by adding a couple of handfuls of porridge oats.

AmyDeez · 19/09/2015 14:43

Add parsnip or sweet potato to your mash topping for a more interesting shepherds/cottage pie! _

Tkw2014 · 19/09/2015 14:50

Adding a touch of spice to bolognaise!
