We've been asked by the team at Sainsbury's to find out how Mumsnetters put a twist on their favourite midweek recipes.

Sainsbury's say "As a nation we cook over 5 billion midweek meals a year - and Sainsbury's is passionate about offering great quality, everyday food to inspire households that are cooking the meals that matter to Britain. The store cupboard is a goldmine of interesting twists in waiting. With more ingredients available than ever before, now is the time to reclaim the store cupboard and start experimenting!"

So, how do you put a twist on your favourite recipe? Maybe you add balsamic vinegar to a pasta bake? Or perhaps you add some chilli to a shepherds pie? Maybe you've even added peanut butter to a stir fry?

Whatever your top twists are for your weeknight meals, Sainsbury's would love to hear about them. Take a look at the Sainsbury's Homemade website for inspiration and to see what twists they've suggested.

Everyone who posts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one winner will receive a £300 Sainsbury's voucher to spend in store or online at sainsburys.co.uk.

Please note your comments may be included on Sainsbury's social media channels, and possibly elsewhere, so please only post if you're comfortable with this.

Thanks and good luck,

marmite is also nice under poached eggs on toast.

BettyBlueToo · 15/09/2015 22:41

Fish finger pie instead of fish fingers, mash and beans. Layers of fish fingers, then beans, then cheese, topped with mash and baked.

BrieAndChilli · 16/09/2015 08:13

I add peanut butter to stir fry!
I add ketchup to bolagnaise
I make a Mexican lasagne using chicken fajita mix and layering with cheese sauce an salsa and using tortilla instead of lasagne. Topped with guacamole and sour cream it's a hit in our house
My quickest meal is stirring cream cheese and pesto into hot pasta and adding chopped ham and tomatoes

timeforabrewnow · 16/09/2015 09:07

big slug of red wine with anything helps a lot I find.

MerryMarigold · 16/09/2015 09:39

my twist is putting celery in nearly everything. It It's hardly noticeable when cooked well, like onion, but adds a lovely savoury flavour to most things (gravy, bolognaise, risotto etc).

jro4 · 16/09/2015 11:12

For a quick and easy carbonara we use bacon, creme fraiche and leek, add some parmaesan and pepper boom you're done! Some pasta too obviously!

jro4 · 16/09/2015 11:13

i add worchester sauce and honey to my bolognese

skyeskyeskye · 16/09/2015 11:53

I always add grated cheese to mash potato.

If I am making a very basic slow cooker meal, I will make a jug of gravy with a vegetable stock cube to give it more flavour, then just chuck it on top of the meat/veg/potatoes and leave it to cook.

blibblobblub · 16/09/2015 13:21

Peanut butter in stir fry is pretty normal isn't it? Like a satay sauce kind of affair.

I put soy sauce in gravy. In fact, I put whatever I can get my hands on in gravy generally.

DH sprinkles roast potatoes with a little mustard powder to get them nice and crispy.

Oh, and adding a bit of mayonnaise to mashed potato is a little tweak I picked up from my dad, and it's bloody delicious.

del2929 · 16/09/2015 14:14

i find a spoon full of peri peri sauce always works wonders.

Special Cheese on Toast
I like to spread green basil pesto on bread before grilling cheese (and sometimes ham and mushrooms on top) to make a different cheese on toast.

Non-Tomato Red Sauce
I also like to blitz a drained jar of antipasti chargrilled peppers, and add to a red wine reduction as an alternative red sauce to a tomato sauce for those with a tomato allergy/intolerance, add to cooked mince and onion and grated carrot and there is a lovely red pasta sauce for lasagne or any other pasta.

Two meals in one
When we have roasted vegetables (squash, carrots, peppers, sweet potato, beetroot, red onion) I chop twice as much and put half in a pan on the hob with some onion and celery and add water to cover them, and a handful or two of red lentils and blitz to make a delicious soup which I can then freeze and pull out another day. I serve the roasted veg with some melted goats cheese.

georgiecurl · 16/09/2015 17:12

i'm afraid i put peanut butter (the real stuff, not the stuff filled with sugar) in most things....stir frys, stews, pasta sauces. it really does pep things up

MyIronLung · 16/09/2015 17:22

Worcester sauce in gravy.
Mint sauce in gravy.
Coarse Dijon mustard in mash potatoes.
Pickled gherkins and sweetcorn in tuna mayo.

BugritAndTidyup · 16/09/2015 20:09

When making a chicken paella I brown the chicken thighs, then remove the skin and continue to fry it until it turns into crackling, which I sprinkle over at the end.

NoisyOyster · 16/09/2015 22:33

To "posh" up ready made custard, add passion fruit seeds and / or vanilla bean paste- makes it look more homemade and gives a gorgeous fruity tang that works so well with trifle or sponge puddings!

HitsAndMrs · 17/09/2015 11:26

We use coriander, chilli and garlic in most things - at the moment it's in tuna tacos.
Chocolate in chilli. Worcester sauce in shepherds pie. Paprika on chicken or chips. It's making me hungry now!

superbfairywren · 17/09/2015 11:54

I add coca cola to beef stew, it seems to make the beef extra tender.

I make the filling for fajitas with chicken and vegetables but have it as a topping for jacket potatoes or on toast with cheese on top to make a change.

TheWildRumpyPumpus · 17/09/2015 12:01

We love Yorkshire puddings with golden syrup and Vanilla ice cream here - delicious after a roast dinner!

FattyNinjaOwl · 17/09/2015 12:34

I add a teaspoon of English mustard to my bolognese.

StickChildNumberTwo · 17/09/2015 21:34

Mustard in the batter for toad in the hole.

flamingtoaster · 17/09/2015 21:43

I add home made chutney to lots of things - beans, stews, to pasatta to make a pasta sauce, etc.

HopefulHamster · 17/09/2015 21:45

A bit of dark chocolate in chilli. But I don't think that's so unusual :)

shockedballoon · 17/09/2015 22:20

Half a teaspoon of cinnamon to Spag Bol - brings out the sweetness.

I add it with mixed herbs just after frying off the garlic and onions (also grated red pepper and grated carrot in a ninja-veg style), fry for a few more mins then add the tinned toms and tom purée. Cook down. Blitz with blitzer (thus hiding veg thoroughly). Fry mince, sprinkle stock cube over. fry bit more. Tip browned mince into blitzed sauce. Deglaze frying pan with glug of red wine and tip that in too. Cook down in oven.

Wilhamenawonka · 18/09/2015 06:44

Chocolate chips added to crumble mix
Olives added to scrambled eggs
Eggs added to porridge for protein and a richer finish
Loads and loads of different porridge recipes
Chilli added to cheese scones
Chocolate to everything else Blush

CheeseAtFourpence · 18/09/2015 07:00

Chocolate in my chilli con carne.

Cottage cheese in my lasagne rather than bechamel sauce.

Chicken in my lasagne rather than beef/Turkey mince.
