We've been asked by the team at Sainsbury's to find out how Mumsnetters put a twist on their favourite midweek recipes.

Sainsbury's say "As a nation we cook over 5 billion midweek meals a year - and Sainsbury's is passionate about offering great quality, everyday food to inspire households that are cooking the meals that matter to Britain. The store cupboard is a goldmine of interesting twists in waiting. With more ingredients available than ever before, now is the time to reclaim the store cupboard and start experimenting!"

So, how do you put a twist on your favourite recipe? Maybe you add balsamic vinegar to a pasta bake? Or perhaps you add some chilli to a shepherds pie? Maybe you've even added peanut butter to a stir fry?

Whatever your top twists are for your weeknight meals, Sainsbury's would love to hear about them. Take a look at the Sainsbury's Homemade website for inspiration and to see what twists they've suggested.

Everyone who posts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one winner will receive a £300 Sainsbury's voucher to spend in store or online at sainsburys.co.uk.

Please note your comments may be included on Sainsbury's social media channels, and possibly elsewhere, so please only post if you're comfortable with this.

Thanks and good luck,

a teaspoon of paprika jazzes up a chicken risotto here. With some mild chorizo it makes it a bit interesting for the little children.

Mustard powder in cheese sauces.
Finely chopped meat rather than mince in shepherds pie.
Worcestershire sauce in most beef and lamb recipes.
Surimi is nicer than crab in seafood linguine.

PurpleSkyatthewateringhole · 14/09/2015 20:33

I add cranberry sauce to a chicken casserole whilst it's still cooking. It gives it a nice sweetness.

YerTiz · 14/09/2015 20:38

Um, grated cheese on salted popcorn (lush!).

Can't think of anything else weird Wink

Butteredparsnips · 14/09/2015 21:26

Ha - I actually tried the coffee in ragu at the weekend! I made a lasagne with half quorn mince and it needed more colour or my deception would have been obvious. An opportunity then to give the coffee a whirl. It was fine. Didn't taste of coffee, but it did add the desired colour and no one noticed the quorn. Grin

Also ragu needs chicken livers

Beef burgers with beetroot and sour cream & chives

Peas with a tsp of sugar

Redcurrant Jelly in Gravy

Brandy with breadcrumbs, lemon zest and golden syrup at the bottom of a steamed sponge. Actually forget the sponge. Brandy and golden syrup is food of the gods.

I have Sweet chilli sauce on my porridge. It's lovely, but I have yet to convince anyone else of its loveliness.

InAndOfMyself · 14/09/2015 22:29

When I make grilled cheese sandwiches (sort of like a cheese toastie but better) I add a dash of mustard powder on top of the cheese and put tomato slices in too.

chairmeoh · 14/09/2015 22:32

Onions and Bramley Apple added to mash. Delicious with sausages.

Cocacolaandchocolate · 14/09/2015 23:15

I always add herbs to dishes or a dash of pepper.
I also add cherry tomatoes to midweek dishes and sweet corn to pasta and sauce!

Dolallytats · 15/09/2015 08:01

Worcestershire sauce in anything containing minced beef, mustard in cheese sauces and peanut butter in some curries is as far as we go here.

FeelingSmurfy · 15/09/2015 10:10

I use tortillas as a thin and crispy pizza base

sliceofsoup · 15/09/2015 10:14

I make a delicious curry where the sauce is just curry powder, flour, stock and coconut milk. About 5 minutes before the end of cooking I stir through a tablespoon of seedless raspberry jam. It is so yummy. A fav in this house.

SconeForAStroll · 15/09/2015 10:47

My dc love roast chicken - it's their favourite meal, but it takes too long on a week night.

Instead a super quick tea is chicken breasts thumped with a rolling pin between two sheets of grease proof, oregano and cumin seeds, salt and pepper (on each side) and then gently sautéed. Five minutes each side and done!

MissFitt68 · 15/09/2015 11:13

Ketchup to everything!
And spinach

And coconut oil wherever I can

Chelsea26 · 15/09/2015 11:36

My best twist is to add a whole jar - juice and everything of hot and sweet chopped jalapenos to chilli con carne. Gives it a lovely tangy flavour. Also once chilli is cooked top with chopped raw red onion, natural yogurt and a drizzle of american mustard... I'm so having this for dinner tonight!

CheeseEMouse · 15/09/2015 12:51

I always put a tea spoon of grainy mustard into the parsley and dill sauce when I make fish pie. Gives it a bit of oomph and even my mustard hating husband likes it.

BettyOctopus · 15/09/2015 13:09

Sometimes add a blob of marmelade to a stirfry for a citrus twist

glasgowlass · 15/09/2015 13:15

Macaroni cheese with added cauliflower, broccoli, panchetta & whole cherry plum tomatoes thrown in before baking in oven is simply fabulous.

BrandNewAndImproved · 15/09/2015 15:56

Baked Macaroni cheese with layers of mozzarella. I also add a chicken stock cube to the white sauce and sometimes curry powder.

A splodge of ketchup in a basic curry powder sort of curry makes all the difference.

Pumpkin boiled down with the beef while your making beef stew give it an extremely nice flavour.

If you are putting the already bbqd ribs or chicken into the oven put them in an oven bag with honey, bbq sauce and a chilli sliced thinly. Something okish into something amazing.

Instead of boring boiled cabbage I fry onions, spring onions, peppers, garlic and sliced chilli, after ten minutes add shredded cabbage and stir fry it. Then add hot water and a stock cube and boil until the cabbage is cooked.

Wholegrain Mustard in mash but that's already been said.

Chilli con carne seasons like cumin and cinnamon make amazing home made wedges.

If your making meatballs from scratch add a couple of sausages to the mince mixture plus bbq sauce, ketchup, chillies, garlic, spring onions, ect ect.

If you slice a couple of spring onions downwards squash slightly and add to any soup of stew 15 minutes before its ready you'll always carry on doing that.

Spring onions are really underrated.

DinosaursRoar · 15/09/2015 16:00

a shot of coffee in a chilli gives it a lovely richness.

I do peanut butter in stirfries (I do a sauce with orange juice, peanut butter, soy sauce and chinese 5 spice, tis lovely!)

a teaspoon of cranberry sauce when making chicken gravy is a lovely flavour

A friend of mine swears by putting a dollop of brown sauce in her shepards pie.

ThomasRichard · 15/09/2015 18:29

I tried something new this evening. I usually simply bake a pork tenderloin with a few spices but tonight I wrapped one in Brunswick ham. It was very tasty! Next time I'm going to try sandwiching apple slices inbetween the pork and the ham.

FuckYouChrisAndThatHorse · 15/09/2015 19:26

Honey instead of sugar
Anchovies instead of salt
Worcestershire sauce in any minced meat dish
Dark cocoa-rich chocolate in chilli
And when making a curry use chilli-infused oil to brown off the meat.

Theimpossiblegirl · 15/09/2015 19:55

My DDs love macaroni cheese and it's a quick mid-week meal. I add cherry tomatoes to theirs and chorizo to mine for added flavour.

Roseformeplease · 15/09/2015 20:10

Haggis or black pudding added to a beef stew or, most deliciously, cottage pie turns it from ordinary to amazing.

MegBusset · 15/09/2015 20:40

Marmite is great in beans on toast - thick layer under the beans, then cheese on top, yum.
