We've been asked by the team at Sainsbury's to find out how Mumsnetters put a twist on their favourite midweek recipes.

Sainsbury's say "As a nation we cook over 5 billion midweek meals a year - and Sainsbury's is passionate about offering great quality, everyday food to inspire households that are cooking the meals that matter to Britain. The store cupboard is a goldmine of interesting twists in waiting. With more ingredients available than ever before, now is the time to reclaim the store cupboard and start experimenting!"

So, how do you put a twist on your favourite recipe? Maybe you add balsamic vinegar to a pasta bake? Or perhaps you add some chilli to a shepherds pie? Maybe you've even added peanut butter to a stir fry?

Whatever your top twists are for your weeknight meals, Sainsbury's would love to hear about them. Take a look at the Sainsbury's Homemade website for inspiration and to see what twists they've suggested.

Everyone who posts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one winner will receive a £300 Sainsbury's voucher to spend in store or online at sainsburys.co.uk.

Please note your comments may be included on Sainsbury's social media channels, and possibly elsewhere, so please only post if you're comfortable with this.

Thanks and good luck,

A veg. stock cube to the water when boiling carrots. Barely cover with water and when it has all but evaporated a knob of butter. Tasty glazed carrots.

CousinChloe · 18/09/2015 09:16

I add marmite in a very thin layer under peanut butter on toast.

Add anchovies to bolognese

Signoritawhocansway · 18/09/2015 18:09

My twists are so regular they become part of the recipe! Examples include a splash of tabasco in Bolognese and most other tomato sauces, marmite in corned beef hash, brown sauce in cottage pie.

My ALL TIME FAVOURITE twist is a spoon of horseradish in mash.

Peanut butter in a beef curry, English mustard with cheesy jackets, Worcestershire sauce in tomato sauces. Crumbled feta or grated cheddar on top of shepherd's pie is a big favourite too.

Butternut squash with cinnamon! It's to die for as a side dish! Butternut squash chopped into cubes, put into an oven roasting bag, with rosemary (also a but out there) olive oil and cinnamon it's delicious x

I vary the ingredients where possible. Different vegetables, different meat, different flavours.

A dash of brown sugar in mince, stews, chicken, meat gravies and so on makes it punchier.

Cornflour sprinkled on par boiled potatoes cut into chips then wapped in the oven. makes them super crispy

Ginger snaps as crumble toppings

Actually it's amazing what goes in my meals when I'm trying to get rid of something.

Chipotle, cumin and dark chocolate in chilli.

ThemisA · 19/09/2015 06:43

I make a basic tomato sauce and then split it and add diced fried veg to one half as the base for a veggie lasagne and lentils to the other for a base for a veggie mousaka and that is two meals from one. I sometimes add chilli flakes, kidney beans and quorn for a chilli.

I keep fruit puree (apples, apricots, banana) in the freezer (made on bulk) and add it to a muesli base with plain yogurt and leave to soak - makes a great pudding or breakfast.

I always add horseradish to pasta sauces to give a bit of extra bite

Kitsune1972 · 19/09/2015 08:12

I've been looking at ways to add some 'umami' to things I often cook, like roast with gravy. Mustard works surprisingly well; add a couple of tablespoons to the roast pot and you won't even notice the mustard is there, but it brings out the flavour of the meat beautifully (add some Tamari soy sauce as well, and it's a match made in heaven). Recently I read an article about colatura, or garum, which is a fermented anchovy sauce that apparently was the 'ketchup of the ancient Roman world'. It's supposed to add a burst of flavour too, and I've bought some now - but am still researching before I try it in a recipe :)

Adding a hint of Lemon and Lime really changes the taste and it really does taste yummy, My children enjoy squeezing the lemons and then eating the rest :) x

janeyf1 · 19/09/2015 08:51

I make a lot of tomato based meals mid week so as to add a tasty and cheerful twist to keep the family happy.

steviestarship · 19/09/2015 08:54

A cheap tub of Tomato Salsa added to Spaghetti Bolognase or Chili Con Carne makes it quite special!

Ganne1 · 19/09/2015 08:55

I add a little hint of something different, perhaps some tamarind sauce or (not too much) indian pickle. It livens things up a treat.

savegringo · 19/09/2015 08:58

I add hot sauce in everything!

Mossiebonbon · 19/09/2015 09:22
