We've been asked by the team at Sainsbury's to find out how Mumsnetters put a twist on their favourite midweek recipes.

Sainsbury's say "As a nation we cook over 5 billion midweek meals a year - and Sainsbury's is passionate about offering great quality, everyday food to inspire households that are cooking the meals that matter to Britain. The store cupboard is a goldmine of interesting twists in waiting. With more ingredients available than ever before, now is the time to reclaim the store cupboard and start experimenting!"

So, how do you put a twist on your favourite recipe? Maybe you add balsamic vinegar to a pasta bake? Or perhaps you add some chilli to a shepherds pie? Maybe you've even added peanut butter to a stir fry?

Whatever your top twists are for your weeknight meals, Sainsbury's would love to hear about them. Take a look at the Sainsbury's Homemade website for inspiration and to see what twists they've suggested.

Everyone who posts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one winner will receive a £300 Sainsbury's voucher to spend in store or online at sainsburys.co.uk.

Please note your comments may be included on Sainsbury's social media channels, and possibly elsewhere, so please only post if you're comfortable with this.

Thanks and good luck,

I love Garlic so I put it in just about anything I can, also peanut butter is brownies is delicious!

rainbowvalley · 19/09/2015 15:13

I make it a themed recipe from a specific country. Maybe a curry or stir fry sometimes add exotic spices. Sugar & white vinegar often gives a sweet and sour taste!

Funkyferret · 19/09/2015 15:16

I make a quick satay marinade with peanut butter, balsamic, olive oil, garlic and ginger. I toss in cubes of halloumi and veg, leave if for a while, thread on skewers and grill. I've also just discovered Heinz tagine chickpeas and add to veg including sweet potato, with some chopped apricot to make a quick Moroccan style stew.

Peanut butter & lemon juice on chicken for kebabs
Baked beans added to Chili Con Carne makes it tasty
Exotic veg in stir fry
Nutribullet several ingredients to make an unusual soup

Adding onion, red pepper, chilli powder and turmeric to baked beans = quick, cheap and healthy curry.

Laineyflo · 19/09/2015 15:55

We like to add some curry powder to our baked beans..it makes them extra tasty. Unfortunately, it also makes the Hubby much windier than normal..

toasted marshmallows in icecream

GREATAUNT1 · 19/09/2015 16:48

I add a tin of mushy peas to mince dishes, the result is quite a distinct flavour.

littleme96 · 19/09/2015 16:56

Mustard powder in macaroni cheese.

Dark chocolate in chilli and stews.

Chilli flakes are lovely on cheese on toast.

Curry powder added to sausage pasta is yummy for a bit of a kick.

samcornfield · 19/09/2015 17:29

Worcestershire sauce spices up all sorts of meals - especially anything containing mince

Themilseys · 19/09/2015 17:39

Curry powder on cheese on toast, mmmmmm

wjanice121 · 19/09/2015 18:00

I do a bolognese/enchilada mix.

I love enchiladas but my son doesn't like spicy food so to compromise I:

  1. Make a bolognese.
  2. Put the bolognese mixture into rolled tortilla wraps (folded in at both ends to seal).
  3. Place all the parcels next to each other on a tray.
  4. Cover the parcels in tomato sauce.
  5. Top with a mixture of buffallo mozzarella and grated chese.
  6. Bake for approx 20 mins or until cheese golden brown.

A bit of cinnamon added to quorn mince when we have shepherd's pie or bolognese.

jayz268 · 19/09/2015 18:32

I add different ingredients to pep things up, like Worcester Sauce and extra garlic and peppers into mince recipes.

robbo86otm · 19/09/2015 18:44

I add a small amount of mustard to some of my cheese sauce based recipes such as cauliflower cheese or macaroni cheese, i find it enhances the taste and flavour of the cheese

mave · 19/09/2015 18:48

A spinach layer in my lasagne to add extra flavour and goodness!

Elizasmum02 · 19/09/2015 18:54

I add crushed garlic to mash potatoes, its yummy

cagsd · 19/09/2015 19:02

My kids love home made chicken dippers (simple as anything, just dip them in flour, beaten egg and crushed cornflakes) but for an extra twist I do sometimes spice them up a bit by mixing some Cajun spice in with the cornflakes!

arat · 19/09/2015 19:34

My never-fail ingredient for adding a twist is Worcestershire sauce - works a treat on most things!

piggyliggy2015 · 19/09/2015 19:58

I add grated celery and grated carrot into lots of my recipes such as Bolognese, Chilli, Pasta sauce - it really helps to add a rich flavour and also is great as vegetables are hidden!

Gilla01 · 19/09/2015 20:27

I add dry mustard to cheese sauce for Cauliflower Cheese, Lasagne, etc.
I often add egg yolk to mashed potatoes to add protein.
I'll puree veg and add to soups and stews so they don't know they're eating them.
A teaspoon of marmite will add depth and flavour to stews and casseroles.

Crown · 19/09/2015 20:39

When I cook onions for hot-dogs I add a little brown sugar to them to sweeten them.

BellaWella86 · 19/09/2015 20:51

Tabasco sauce in lots of things (spaghetti bolognese, shepherds pie, curry, etc!). Gives it a nice twist.

compy99 · 19/09/2015 20:52

cheese and diced onion added to mash potato, with salad, french stick and stuffed red peppers are always popular

southernsun · 19/09/2015 21:24

We put whole cherry tomatoes and goats cheese in our lasagne. Adds a some extra taste and texture to one of our favourite meals.
