We've been asked by the team at MoneySuperMarket to find out about the weirdest things Mumsnetters have found when moving in to a new home, which the previous owners or tenants left behind.

MoneySuperMarket say "We know moving home can be a stressful experience and sometimes it can be accompanied a few unexpected and 'interesting' surprises at the other end! Whether you've recently moved home or not, we'd love to hear your stories on the thread below.

Also - for those of you in the process of moving right now, don't forget to check out our Home Mover's hub, where you'll find a wealth of articles, videos and tools designed to get you to your own personal 'Happily Ever After' just that little bit quicker..."

So, what weird or wonderful things have you found when moving? Maybe the previous owner of your house left behind a particularly impressive stamp collection? Or perhaps you found a stack of old diaries? Or maybe you found a wig hidden in the back of the wardrobe?

Whatever you've found, MoneySuperMarket would love to hear about it!

Everyone who posts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw* where one winner will receive a £300 Love2Shop voucher from Mumsnet.

Please note your comments may be included on MoneySuperMarket's social media channels, and possibly elsewhere, so please only post if you're comfortable with this.

Thanks and good luck,
MNHQ

DM & I moved into a flat in a certain - shall we say not very naice - neighbourhood when I was about eight.

Everything went fine for the first few weeks, then she decided to light the fire.

Lots of smoke, both of us felt a bit funny, everything smelt weird. Couldn't work out why until she poked around a bit in the chimney and discovered the previous tenants had stored their stash of drugs up there and evidently forgotten to take it with them! or gone to prison and had to leave it behind

A room with a velvet feel and look carpet (bright red) with only a round bath in it nothing else. And a curry in the fridge which had mould growing in and even outside of the tub.

Some lovely stories on here! We moved into a large Edwardian house when I was 11. The lovely elderly couple (we'll call them Mr & Mrs M) who lived there were moving into sheltered accommodation as it was too big and they could no longer maintain it. They had lived in the house for their entire married life (60 years) and were very sad to leave. Sadly, Mrs M died soon afterwards but my parents had Mr M over for lunch a few times and he loved seeing the changes they were making to the house.

Anyway, when it came to my bedroom being refurbished, my Mum finally opened the large hatches that were at the top of the very deep wardrobes. Gosh it was amazing, there were a pair of absolutely beautiful black and white spats in perfect condition, a top hat, a cane and various other small antiquities. There were also some very old (1940's) beautifully preserved newspapers. Sadly, by the time this discovery was made, Mr M had died. I can't recall what my parents did with the items, it was more than 30 years ago but I remember that it was a really lovely discovery at the time, even as a child. Bless Mr & Mrs M....I hope they rest in eternal peace Smile.

Bought a house from a very odd man. I found some kind of swingers diary detailing dates and times and potential partners. Also there was an old outdoor toilet shed full of lumpy rolls of carpet. Garden tools inside the carpet. I was very nervous when I unrolled the carpets.

Sedona123 · 16/09/2015 00:26

When we moved in, the spare room had a slightly lumpy rectangular shape under the carpet. We finally removed the carpet two years later, and found a tobacco tin lid was causing the lump. It was about 5 inches by 3 inches, so we've no idea how it could have been accidentally left when the carpet was being fitted.

We also found a massive pair of red men's y-fronts in the washing machine after I had washed our white towels on moving in day. I did give the drum a little spin before loading the towels, so they must have been all bunched up at the side of the drum.

A dinner plate lying at the edge of the garden.

When cleaning the drawers before I put my things in, I pulled the drawer out to find what seemed like the previous owner entire underwear collection! Wonder if they missed it?

I moved into a new-build and found what I assume was a builders lunchbox filled with (very stinky) luncheon meat sandwiches (I hadn't seen luncheon meat in years), a soft brown apple and a bag of crisps. They were in the airing cupboard.

mave · 16/09/2015 06:35

Very little unfortunately. Our house we bought last had the most disgusting decor though, every door was painted green, yellow or pink. They had a dog and left us a horrible smell of urine. Needless to say that the carpet was gutted!!

WarmHugs · 16/09/2015 06:46

Some of these are grim!

I found that my house had no gas supply. Fairly modern house and no gas pipes. I had just assumed it would have a gas supply!

Cost me a fortune to have it installed!

kippers under the bath, house stunk for weeks , just awful , im surprised the council hadnt smelt them when the came to clear the house

steviestarship · 16/09/2015 06:53

In the attic of my old house, we found a shoe box. When we opened the box
there was a folded piece of paper. I unfolded it and stuck on it was a pair of eyes which had been cut out of a newspaper and written above it were the words "Booo! We're watching you"
Freaked me out for a bit I can tell you!

shawbarbara · 16/09/2015 07:03

Moving in to find - no lightbulbs, toilet seats etc - but yet the previous owners had left us milk , butter and bread in the fridge ? weird or what lol

barbsbarbs · 16/09/2015 07:04

when we first got married we moved into a furnished house and when I was making the beds i found a horsewhip under the mattress. we did have a laugh

Tinker15 · 16/09/2015 07:24

We moved into a house that needed complete renovation. Upon pulling an archway down we found newspapers dating back to 1974, a real find!

maryandbuzz1 · 16/09/2015 07:35

A set of Football badges.

ThemisA · 16/09/2015 07:39

I have been lucky and never had anything too weird but one house we moved to in Belgium when I was a child had an old map of the world on an entire wall in the dining room complete with markers.

Chopstheduck · 16/09/2015 07:41

muffin trays!

Squid102 · 16/09/2015 07:49

A very neat pile of mens fingernail clippings. Eurgh!

flozza42 · 16/09/2015 07:52

We found a loft full of tena lady products!

gohugatree · 16/09/2015 08:02

A house we moved into in Sydney, Australia. Previous occupants left in a hurry and we had to hire a skip to get rid of all the crap they'd left. Among the crap was a filing cabinet containing all the very personal details of clients of the dating agency which the previous occupants ran. Including sexual proclivities. And the swingers clubs they'd run across the Sydney metropolitan area. I used to flinch when anyone rang the front door bell for years - never quite knew who to expect! Grin

jt75 · 16/09/2015 08:15

A small painting by the previous owner, who had died, found in an outhouse. I framed it and put it on the wall.

finleypop · 16/09/2015 08:23

A Kitchen unit in the loft. It did not fit through the hatch so we have no idea why it was up there

castleton · 16/09/2015 08:35

When I moved into my first house I found that it had only been wallpapered up to the edges of the furniture that had been there when we looked around.

MimiJoy · 16/09/2015 08:43

Pretty disgusting, but we found a lump of rotten meat in the garden covered in maggots! Of course, I retreated quickly and left my husband to get rid ...
