We've been asked by the team at MoneySuperMarket to find out about the weirdest things Mumsnetters have found when moving in to a new home, which the previous owners or tenants left behind.

MoneySuperMarket say "We know moving home can be a stressful experience and sometimes it can be accompanied a few unexpected and 'interesting' surprises at the other end! Whether you've recently moved home or not, we'd love to hear your stories on the thread below.

Also - for those of you in the process of moving right now, don't forget to check out our Home Mover's hub, where you'll find a wealth of articles, videos and tools designed to get you to your own personal 'Happily Ever After' just that little bit quicker..."

So, what weird or wonderful things have you found when moving? Maybe the previous owner of your house left behind a particularly impressive stamp collection? Or perhaps you found a stack of old diaries? Or maybe you found a wig hidden in the back of the wardrobe?

Whatever you've found, MoneySuperMarket would love to hear about it!

Everyone who posts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw* where one winner will receive a £300 Love2Shop voucher from Mumsnet.

Please note your comments may be included on MoneySuperMarket's social media channels, and possibly elsewhere, so please only post if you're comfortable with this.

Thanks and good luck,
MNHQ

When we moved into our house, for about six weeks there was a grey car permanently parked opposite our house constantly with two people in it- not always the same two people. For the first weeks we lived there, we had a string of children knocking on the front door asking to use the toilet Confused.
Eventually the car went away and the children stopped knocking.
After a couple of months we got some floorboards up in the master bedroom and found loads of normal children's clothes as well as really creepy 'adapted' sexy children's clothes (think French maid outfits for 6 small children) under the floorboards.
Confused

I don't know if this counts, but at university I was in college rooms for three years, moving to a different room each year. In the second year I was in the attic of a very old building that used to be, legend had it, a brothel. It was a charming rickety attic room which I loved, but there was a door at the far end which when opened led to some dusty storage space - with a rope noose hanging from the ceiling.

I have no idea why it was there. I guess it must have had some practical purpose in supporting something at some point. I just never opened the door again - apart from to show people my noose of course.

Disgusting - False teeth in the bathroom - urgh!

Lovely - A rocking chair which I restored and then fed my babies on which is now my chairdrobe!

A bucket under the eaves, to catch drips from the neighbour's leaky dormer window that was drilling holes in our ceiling. Attached to the bucket, a string to pull it out so it could be emptied, and nearby a stick to poke it back again.

Also half an Edwardian phone box in the back garden, a bricked-in fireplace full of ash and little glass bottles, and lots of bats.

In 1972, dad, mum, dsis and I moved into a bungalow in a tiny country village.

When we arrived, there was a pony in the back garden! Sadly the previous owners came and picked it up that afternoon - dsis and I were so disappointed.

The ex tenants left a massive karma sutra type book in one of the high cupboards in our bedroom.

We found a large mirror on the living room wall. Fine. But then the previous owner popped in to deliver the keys (don't ask) and it transpired said mirrow was actually a wedding present to him and his wife they had forgotten to take. He then was awkwardly offering to pay for the mirrow (which of course we just told him to take!)

There were also a whole load of pictures of elephants in the loft. Apparently not his, but thhe local Oxfam seemed to do quite well selling them!

*mirror. Typing one handed!

We nearly bought a house that had a mural on one wall in one of the bedrooms. The mural was of a dogs head. It took up most of the wall & wasn't a cute, friendly looking dog either! I was quite looking forward to getting the paint out & covering it when we moved in but our buyer backed out & the chain fell apart. I was looking for the photo I took of it the other day but can't find it now!

The house we moved in to just had a load of cat hair & children's toys left behind. Outdoor toys in all the hedges, also some rusty shears & a sledge hammer by the back door... Oh, & some old Belgian postcards that I could apparently sell on eBay for about £5. I'm keeping them in case they're worth something someday!

Baby teeth in the wine rack. That was fairly disgusting!

Anj123 · 15/09/2015 16:31

I haven't found anything strange when moving into a new house but I used to work in housing and found a tarot card in an empty property!

GetTheFudgeOutOfRodge · 15/09/2015 16:32

My DFIL found a vibrator in a glass on a windowsill Grin??

Biblical quotations painted on the inside of a fitted wardrobe door in a room that had belonged to the teenage daughter. Very dark 'fire and brimstone' kind of thing.

I don't know what the proper term for it is but the house we live in now was occupied for over 50 years by the same family, the DH was in the navy and in the loft we found a lovely chest with a full dress uniform. He had passed away, his only son didn't want it so we donated it to the local theatre group

jumpinghoops · 15/09/2015 20:42

A full suit of armour in the loft. My partner got fully dressed into it, (somehow) crept/clanked downstairs and started chatting normally- my back was turned. I nearly wet myself when I turned around! In the same house: toenail clippings, in small piles, in several places.

DrDiva · 15/09/2015 20:43

A shopping trolley. In the galley kitchen.

Maniacalparrot · 15/09/2015 21:22

A note to Father Christmas up the chimney (fabulous??)!

Maniacalparrot · 15/09/2015 21:24

A note to Father Christmas up the chimney :)

reni2 · 15/09/2015 21:28

Transparent plastic high heeled shoes that looked like they were made from glass and a handwritten price list for very personal services.

Thebookswereherfriends · 15/09/2015 21:31

When we dismantled the ugly built-in wardrobe in the bedroom there was a very old and threadbare fox stole - it had eyes and everything! It was horrible and i could not see the appeal in wearing it, even in it's heyday! Also a single framed picture of a man and his German shepherd up in the loft.

JokerOnTheHilltop · 15/09/2015 21:46

20 ikea plates and 20 ikea sideplates, a crockpot, several old kettles, a high chair and enough cutlery for an army.

rambunctious · 15/09/2015 21:50

A gay porn magazine, full of images of men (looking like Freddie Mercury) wearing leather jackets with not a lot else.

TheExMotherInLaw · 15/09/2015 22:04

The garage had dozens of old TVs in it, and the loft contained lots of old clothing, which was full of moths.

Ta1kinPeace · 15/09/2015 22:06

A six foot long chest freezer, plugged in and running - filled with fruit from the garden in previous years.
We made wine out of it.

Maegeri · 15/09/2015 22:12

When we moved in the loft was empty apart from a rather sad looking Christmas wreath. It had a robin on it and the kids liked it so we added some baubles and tinsel and put it on the front door that Christmas. We moved out 7 years later and left it on its own in the loft just where we found it. The following Christmas we drove past our old house and there it was hung on the front door. We hope it gets passed on to whoever lives there from now on.
