We've been asked by the team at MoneySuperMarket to find out about the weirdest things Mumsnetters have found when moving in to a new home, which the previous owners or tenants left behind.

MoneySuperMarket say "We know moving home can be a stressful experience and sometimes it can be accompanied a few unexpected and 'interesting' surprises at the other end! Whether you've recently moved home or not, we'd love to hear your stories on the thread below.

Also - for those of you in the process of moving right now, don't forget to check out our Home Mover's hub, where you'll find a wealth of articles, videos and tools designed to get you to your own personal 'Happily Ever After' just that little bit quicker..."

So, what weird or wonderful things have you found when moving? Maybe the previous owner of your house left behind a particularly impressive stamp collection? Or perhaps you found a stack of old diaries? Or maybe you found a wig hidden in the back of the wardrobe?

Whatever you've found, MoneySuperMarket would love to hear about it!

Everyone who posts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw* where one winner will receive a £300 Love2Shop voucher from Mumsnet.

Please note your comments may be included on MoneySuperMarket's social media channels, and possibly elsewhere, so please only post if you're comfortable with this.

Thanks and good luck,
MNHQ

When we moved in last year, we found a very sad blue teddy bear plugging a leak in the roof and a hidden floor safe, but the weirdest thing has been the previous owners predilection for burying things in the garden! We've found toys, clothes, bathroom accessories, blankets and other assorted crap every time we've attempted any garden projects Confused

InAndOfMyself · 14/09/2015 21:42

Mostly I've found nothing, as in the previous owner or tenant didn't leave anything. The one thing I found was an unopened pack of tennis balls in the attic space. Not terribly interesting.

We found a 'Janet hearts John' message written in huge letters on a wall when we stripped off the wallpaper. One of the names was the next door neighbour, who had lived there for 30+ years,

bigsnugglebunny · 14/09/2015 21:54

We moved in July this year, we've found three pennies on the top of each doorframe! (See picture) I think it's a superstition of some kind, I've left them where they are.

I think twirlypoo wins Star

All we found were dodgy electrics, mysterious plumbing and some old, well used cooking trays. Nothing of any interest whatsoever.

Theimpossiblegirl · 14/09/2015 22:51

When we removed the cheap plastic bath panel to replace it, we found a collection of fizzy drinks cans, crisp packets, sweet wrappers etc. I can only imagine the original bathroom fitters couldn't be bothered to bin them.

I also found a lovely old milk jug in the garden and now use if for flowers.

blamethecat · 14/09/2015 23:03

Some viagra in the fuse cupboard.

BurningBridges · 14/09/2015 23:33

Bearskin in loft, being used as a water tank cover (keeping the dead pigeons out!

dynevoran · 15/09/2015 06:23

We stripped back textured wallpaper in our bedroom and written on the wall behind the bed on the bare plaster were foot high letters stating "spurs rules okay" . And the house was closer to west ham / Leyton orient!

SpaghettiMeatballs · 15/09/2015 06:34

Stashes of porn magazines. In the loft, under the stairs and in the garage roof.

We thought we'd got rid of it all and set out ripping the kitchen out. As my father was pulling the oven out out slithered another big stack of porn mags from the space underneath.

An antique commode and an OBE. They wanted the obe back but not the commode.

A friend of mine had bought a house from an elderly lady it was in desperate need of renovation, everywhere was yellow due to the copious amounts of cigarettes she smoked. It was their first house so funds were tight and it took them months to get started on replacing the ancient bathroom.

As the pulled out the old bath there were literally thousands of cigarettes butts hidden behind the bath panel. There was a small hole in the sealant around the bath and she must have smoked in the bath for years and then put the cigarette buts into the hole! How the house never went up in flames I do not know.

LimpidPools · 15/09/2015 07:08

Well she probably dipped them in the bathwater first, Latika!

574ejones · 15/09/2015 07:12

We found a cupboard full of trainers and plimsolls in the shed when we moved, and upstairs was an old wardrobe, which we had to hack apart to remove it.

I moved into a shared house once and found a prosthetic leg on my bed! Unusual to say the least! It turns out that this particular house was once an old people's home.

Dolallytats · 15/09/2015 08:05

When I moved into our flat the previous tenant (HA property) had Artexed the back of the bedroom door!! The HA won't replace it and we don't have spare money to spend on internal doors so it's still there!! Just odd!!

My mum found a strange, marked, stone in her garden and when she made a rockery she incorporated it into it. My parents later realised it had archaeological significance (think they saw a near identical one in a local museum) but my mum just decided to leave it where it was!

sashh · 15/09/2015 08:34

When I was about 10 we moved house.

We moved from a new build to my mum's dream house a '1950s semi'. They bought from a spinster in her 50s and her mother. The spinster talked a little bit about the drive having room for a Rolls Royce because one of her boyfriends had had one. She said the back garden was so secluded you could sunbath naked (not true).

The first odd thing my parents found was that there was a distinct lack of plug sockets, and the ones there were had round pin plugs - this was mid 1970s and I'd never seen them before.

My parents managed to find a wholesalers that sold them and bought their entire cuplly, put round pin plugs on things only to discover there was 1 socket in the kitchen. So once the fridge was plugged in the kettle couldn't be.

There were no sockets in the bedrooms, just one in the hall. The maiin living room had no overhead light just wall lights operated by a switch near the fireplace.

When my mum switched on a light it had a red bulb. The next room had a red bulb, all the rooms had red light bulbs. They were old screw in sockets so off my parents went to the wholesalers to buy light bulbs. My mum thought the one in the hall looked quite nice so left it.

A day or two later my parents went to hte 'local' pub and got talking to some regulars. They said they were new to the area and were asked about where they had moved.

There was a lot of winking and, oh 'that house'. The 'red light' house.

Yep the smart professional looking woman in her 50s didn't have a boyfriend with a Rolls, she had a client with a Rolls. I don't think my mother liked to think what had gone on in the garden. Apparently the elderly mother had been in the same game.

The last red light bulb went in the bin that day.

Nothing too outlandish after reading some of these posts but feeling inspired to make a time capsule and hide it while we renovate for someone to find after we are gone!!????My parents house, the lady left a couple of stone squirrel ornaments in the garden and a caravan at the top. To give you the full picture there is no road access to my parents back garden just a path big enough to get the bins out, it goes straight up a hill backs on to farm land. The field sits a good 4 foot higher than the top of the garden. (The caravan did come in over the field how they got it down in one piece I have no idea but the farmer refused to let it be taken out that way)????In our last house a message from the teenage son (xx moved out 'date') on the wall and a bottle of wine.????In our current house, a couple of old chairs, random fork, a set of glasses and woodworm! The garage was slightly more interesting with some older tools, wooden ladders and a branding iron!!

SleepyForest · 15/09/2015 08:44

We moved in and found the previous owner had left a full load in the dishwasher, her daughters pet rabbit and a fitted kitchen in the garage. She did eventually come and pick it all up.

Trudyla · 15/09/2015 09:31

When I moved into my first flat as a student, I found a candle in the subceiling.

The candle was shaped like a cock and balls and played "You are my sunshine, my only sunshine" when lit.

Nice.

marzipancustard · 15/09/2015 10:39

When I was younger my Dad moved house & in the attic we found a 4ft giant stuffed panda toy wearing a pair of lacey women's underwear... & they weren't clean! Shock

Cocacolaandchocolate · 15/09/2015 10:47

A fake chest of drawers which Is covering a locked safe that is drilled in the floor.

del2929 · 15/09/2015 10:53

we found a storage tub full of rotten onions.... the smell was horrendous.

Hoppinggreen · 15/09/2015 11:00

We moved into a house when I was about 15 and when my mum redecorated the lounge she stripped the wallpaper to find that the previous but one owner had written all sorts of creepy things on the wall such as
" I will kill them both"
" when I find her she's dead"
Apparently he had been half way through renovating the house and his wife had left him for someone else and he had gone a bit loopy and killed himself ( thankfully not in the house). It wasn't a lucky house really,my parents split up when we lived there and so did the couldn't they sold it to.
