We've been asked by the team at MoneySuperMarket to find out about the weirdest things Mumsnetters have found when moving in to a new home, which the previous owners or tenants left behind.

MoneySuperMarket say "We know moving home can be a stressful experience and sometimes it can be accompanied a few unexpected and 'interesting' surprises at the other end! Whether you've recently moved home or not, we'd love to hear your stories on the thread below.

Also - for those of you in the process of moving right now, don't forget to check out our Home Mover's hub, where you'll find a wealth of articles, videos and tools designed to get you to your own personal 'Happily Ever After' just that little bit quicker..."

So, what weird or wonderful things have you found when moving? Maybe the previous owner of your house left behind a particularly impressive stamp collection? Or perhaps you found a stack of old diaries? Or maybe you found a wig hidden in the back of the wardrobe?

Whatever you've found, MoneySuperMarket would love to hear about it!

Everyone who posts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw* where one winner will receive a £300 Love2Shop voucher from Mumsnet.

Please note your comments may be included on MoneySuperMarket's social media channels, and possibly elsewhere, so please only post if you're comfortable with this.

Thanks and good luck,
MNHQ

DH found a used and dirty vibrator in a student house when he moved in. He and his friends just left it where they found it: on the windowsill at the top of the stairs. Apparently as a talking point Hmm

The disturbing part is that they went missing after a party. Envy (vom face)

VikingLady who went missing? Grin

A Glass eye staringat me when i opened the loft hatch and flashed in the torch, that was kid of freaky!

SuburbanRhonda · 27/09/2015 10:07

I bought my first house from an Asian family, who left a massive jar of home-made lime pickle in the living room cupboard.

I phoned them and they came to pick it up, saying they'd wondered where it had gone Grin

There was a locked room, which the owner asked us to leave locked for the first month we were there until he could arrange for the stuff to be collected...we obliged....however, he never came back for it, so we Blush broke in. Expecting to find treasures galore, we were a bit nonplussed and wtf, to find half squeezed tubes of toothpaste, half rolls of loo roll, and light bulbs that he'd obviously unscrewed from the fittings. The item of most value was a bit of a stepladder, probably worth a tenner.

When we contacted him to say we had taken over the storeroom, he drove to get his "stuff". From Belgium! Hmm

FUZZ62 · 27/09/2015 18:31

above the ceiling in our first house - meat hooks, meat cutting tools (cleavers etc) and a gas mask, apart from the gas mask the majority of things where explained with it being a former butchers many years ago, luckily they were found when replacing a flat roof otherwise it could of been a bad situation!

Cintacmrs123 · 27/09/2015 18:38

well mine was a awful experience I moved in to a rented house with friends to find some odd things like cupboards full of soft play mats and colored light bulbs. we Joked about why anyone would need this. We found out the hard way a few days later a man knocks on the door turns out it use to be a brothel. Yup ironically they were all red light bulbs ( I had just assumed Roxanne and the red light was just a song)

MaryDunlop99 · 27/09/2015 18:54

I found a jar of Marmite in the bed section of a hamster cage in the loft!

cathyov · 27/09/2015 19:49

Well I could go on about the dirt and the dust and the shock of the carpets being cut around the furniture (did not look so great when the furniture removed!) and the grill pan full of fat or even the fish hooks in the carpet - I would rather forget that move!

HelenPlant · 27/09/2015 19:51

A mouse trap.....complete with rotten mouse. Yick!

kpdchudleigh · 27/09/2015 20:13

I found a large sack of plastic feet in the rafters of an otherwise empty attic. Turned out to be shoe lasts and I sold them to an artisan shoe maker for a nice amount of money.

timmmers · 27/09/2015 20:20

We moved into our house with a pretty big garden compared to where we'd just left, there was a large carpet covering half the lawn which kind of spoiled it so we got to moving it, and underneath was a large crop of beansprouts. A Vietnamese family had lived there before us and apparently it was common for them to grow them this way.
They were pretty tasty :)

When i moved into my previous home a few years ago it had been empty for around 8 years after the owner moved abroad to Canada. Deep in Dartmoor it had really atmospheric and beautiful surroundings. It wasn't until a week after moving in that we went into the attic which was huge. It was empty except for a pile of blankets in the corner which were really old and dusty looking. When we lifted the blankets we found over 30 clowns. The porcelain clowns with silky colourful outfits and staring eyes lol They definitely werent toys. Everything was covered in dust and had been there for a long time. We called the previous owner and he said even though he'd lived there for nearly 10 years on his own he had never needed to go in the attic and that the clowns weren't his. These doll like things were so spooky looking and covered in muck and really dusty blankets. A couple had broken faces which made them even more spooky and so once my sister who turned up the following day started shouting that clowns were bad karma and eeevil and get rid of them etc, we decided to get rid of them. Took a huge pile to a charity shop and the brokens were thrown out. Have no idea how many years they'd lain there or what their story was. Would love to know. lol

we found two odd socks in the kitchen sink!

grannybiker · 27/09/2015 20:58

A whole colony of woodlice who are still here :O !

Kangakate · 27/09/2015 21:16

We found a 10 year old can of Stella behind out gas meter in the kitchen cupboard and for some reason we still have it 10 years on

RandomMess · 27/09/2015 21:26

We discovered that the en-suite bath and hand basin emptied into the guttering! As did the sink from their loft dark room Shock. We had diverted the guttering from the freshwater drainage pipe into a soak away.

They had been responsible for polluting the local fresh water supply for decades with those chemicals!!!

cluckyhen · 27/09/2015 21:42

Living in army housing we always find weird and wonderful left behinds - but the strangest has to have been a blow up doll in the attic!

JessePinkman3 · 27/09/2015 21:54

I've lived here 3 years & recently got round to doing up the bathroom. I unscrewed the mirror & taped underneath there was a post-it note with 'happy birthday' written on it!!! Odd & a bit exciting at the same time!

katieskatie82 · 27/09/2015 21:54

i found all toys laid out in the attic as if a child had been playing up there! It wasnt a converted loft and was very dark and not at all safe! It really spooked me out!

mulgrove · 27/09/2015 21:58

We moved to our new home about 2 years ago now, and when we arrived and unpacked i was soo tried was just putting last bits away in Kitchen Cupbroad and putting kettle on, I opened the cupbroad and sat there was a frigging scary looking clown with a big note hanging around its neck saying Thanks for moving in we will be friends OMG it was very weird and odd, i didn't like it at all and could not sleep all night, lol

dandanrawlings · 27/09/2015 22:25
