We've been asked by the BBC Trust to find out what Mumsnetters would like to see from the BBC in future.

The BBC Trust says "Over the next eighteen months, really important decisions are being made about the future of the BBC. The Government is reviewing the BBC’s Royal Charter, the foundation on which the BBC is built. This happens once in a decade, so it’s a rare chance for you, who pay for the BBC, to have your say on its future."

Please let us know your answers to the questions below:

  • Overall, what do you think of the BBC?
  • Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee?
  • What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of?
  • What one thing would you like the BBC do less of?
  • Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not, why not?
  • Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not?

Please also feel free to add any other comments you have. If you’d like to share more of your views on the future of the BBC you can complete the BBC Trust’s short survey: www.bbc.co.uk/tomorrowsbbc

Everyone who posts on the thread will be entered into a prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win a £300 Love2Shop voucher*

Thanks and good luck,

- Overall, what do you think of the BBC?

I think the BBC both archaic and overpriced.

- Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee?

It doesn't really matter, the BBC is entirely unpopular within 'generation y' and has proven time and time again that they cannot keep up within the digital age.

- What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of?

I like them to continue to remove the 91 BBC executives who are paid MORE than the Prime Minister and 11 bosses get more than DOUBLE his salary

- What one thing would you like the BBC do less of?

Stop broadcasting propaganda and bullying little old ladies into paying their TV tax. That would be fabulous.

- Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not, why not?

Nope, overpriced and second rate.

- Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not?

As stated previously, old and archaic. Too many covered up secrets and grotesquely overpaid suits.

alsproject · 06/09/2015 10:08

I do love the BBC as it does provide high quality programming without adverts but I wish they do a lot of repeats on their "minor" channels just to fill the time. I wish they produced more of their own high quality programmes rather than buying in from external companies so that they could sell more nd make more money from it.

wjanice121 · 06/09/2015 10:11

Overall, what do you think of the BBC?
BBC seems to be the old faithful. It's the channel I always switch to, particularly for the news and politics etc

Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee? Its imperative that the BBC keeps up with the times with new digital services. These don't need to be unduly costly but if the BBC was to let time pass it by it would no longer be the 'go to' channel.

What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of?
I like British comedy series' e.g 'Fried, and 'Would I Lie To You'. I think the BBC is lacking with not having a chat show like the Jeremy Kyle Show.

What one thing would you like the BBC do less of?
Nothing really.

Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not, why not? Yes I think the BBC does provide high quality services because it seems to retain the top (at that time) celebs.

Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not? I don't think its fresh. I do think it is moving with the times but is gently being dragged forward, rather than leading the way.

  1. Overall, what do you think of the BBC?

I have grown up with the BBC and I find it to be more “grown up” than other channels. For that reason, I prefer their news reports to any others.

  1. Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee?

I think they provide a broad range of services – however I would like to see the license fee abolished and replaced with adverts.

  1. What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of?

They make incredible dramas, such as “The Missing”. I’d like to see more of them. I love the “Click” segment on the news as it reminds me of Tomorrow’s World. However, I’d like to see this as a stand alone programme.

  1. What one thing would you like the BBC do less of?

Personally, I would say sport but I know this won’t happen as it is so popular and lucrative! I don’t enjoy the One Show.

  1. Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not, why not?

I think the BBC has consistently provided excellent, high quality drama, news and comedy for as long as I have been watching it.

  1. Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not?

I think that the BBC stands out against other channels because it does keep reinventing itself. In the past it has fallen into a rut but currently I think it is very fresh.

Roraima · 06/09/2015 10:44

I think the licensing is far too expensive for the kind of tv programmes they offer. All the travelling programmes they show are only an excuse and you do not learn anything.
The new idea that we have to pay for iPlayer: totally ridiculous. It is not tv, it is video no matter how they "shake" it now.
BBC should ask less money and stop doing their own "funky" advertising! Truly disagree with the whole concept. Their documentaries are just a sham!

RainbowFlutterby · 06/09/2015 11:04

I rarely watch the BBC these days and consequently I resent having to pay the license fee. The fact that it is a criminal offence not to is disgusting. I think that if the BBC looks at this thread properly they will see that there is probably little harm in moving to an "opt in" service as there are clearly many people who would willingly pay.

devito92 · 06/09/2015 11:05

The BBC is the stalwart of great british TV with first class drama's.

It would be best to cut back on extra channels, radio stations and concentrate on the core programmes.

Documentaries

News

Yes, it excels at drama's

Distinctive yes but on some levels not Fresh it struggles to find new ideas for programming.

flamingtoaster · 06/09/2015 11:05
  • Overall what do you think of the BBC? I think it is the best broadcaster.
  • Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee? I think they are doing enough - they should add any more. Local radio should be protected - ours is wonderful.
  • What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of? Documentaries - especially science.
  • What one thing would you like the BBC do less of? Sport
  • Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not, why not? Yes it is high quality - you have only to compare some other providers to see this!
  • Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not? Yes the BBC is distinctive. Fresh - depends what you mean. Sometimes I think they put on "alternative" comedy etc. just to appear up to date but often these programmes are very poor.
Ahardmanisgoodtofind · 06/09/2015 11:06

Overall, what do you think of the BBC?
I like the BBC, it's an institution.

  • Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee?
It's about right.
  • What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of?
More modern original dramas, such as Sherlock or ripper street (why get rid?). Improve sound quality particularly on dramas.
  • What one thing would you like the BBC do less of?
Less travel shows, particularly with any type of "celebrity". Not entertaining or educational. Fewer follow up/fan shows, the behind the scenes programs, strictly and bake off especially.
  • Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not, why not?
Reasonably, although starting to look a bit "behind"in comparison to Amazon/sky original programming.
  • Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not
Bbc 3 was otherwise no. Seems very much like once a winning format is found it's done to death, at the expense of other programmes, such as the hidden camera/parents watching teens behave badly on holiday/whilst driving/whilst sharing a house. Repetitive and boring.
glennamy · 06/09/2015 11:10

I only watched 3 programs on the BBC, one is/was Top Gear which has been given to Chris Evans, so that is now over for me. The two programs that are left are F1 which has been reduced and The Sky at Night, which is as rare as hens teeth. I do not feel that we as a family get value from the license tax, and I am all for it being scrapped and for them to compete against the other broadcasters for revenue, which should either be by adverts or subscription fee.

finleypop · 06/09/2015 11:13

I think the BBC offers good value for money.
I would like to see a +1 hour channel as sometimes my programmes can clash. Other channels offer this service & I find it useful for avoiding clashes.
I think the BBC have great, original drama & I would love to see more of them.
I am not sure I can think of anything I would like to see less of on BBC. I really appreciate that they do not impose the mindless Saturday night TV that ITV offers. I cannot stand ITV's Saturday night programming.

I do believe that the BBC is original, fresh & exciting.

For the record, I believe that Strictly Come Dancing has become an institution rather than a programme. It is fantastic & I would be gutted if it ever finished!

goose1964 · 06/09/2015 11:19
  • Overall, what do you think of the BBC?

probably the best channels

  • Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee?
happy with the service
  • What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of?
history
  • What one thing would you like the BBC do less of?
game shows
  • Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not, why not?
In the main yes
  • Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not?

I really never understand this sort of question when it applies to inorganic material

prwilson · 06/09/2015 11:30
  • Overall, what do you think of the BBC?

The BBC is a brilliant organisation, and responsible for making British broadcasting the envy of the world.

The license fee allows us to have much better quality broadcasting than a country of our size would otherwise be able to have. There is only so much advertising "cake", only so many companies with the wherewithal to advertise on television, if the BBC were forced to use advertisments to finance itself then it would automatically take the lions share of advertising revenue and thus all the current commercial broadcasters would get correspondingly less, which would affect the quality of their output, thus lowering the overall standard of British broadcasting.

  • Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee?

I think the BBC should continue to focus on what it does now. I particularly like the website, iPlayer and Radio 4/Radio 4 Extra.

  • What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of?

I'd like to see the BBC reclaim the full rights to Formula 1.

  • What one thing would you like the BBC do less of?

Less kowtowing to arrogant politicians.

Personally, I would prefer less reality/talent shows and fewer soaps.

  • Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not, why not?

The BBC provides consistently high quality output. It has the knowhow and the experience.

  • Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not?

The BBC's output is unique and consistently high quality. The BBC seems to have less tendency that other UK broadcasters to copy what the Americans do, which is not a good thing.

  • Overall, what do you think of the BBC?
I like the bbc, I cannot get enough of eastenders
  • Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee?
I would like to see a bbc1 plus 1 channel. if I miss a programme. Its hard for me to catch up online
  • What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of?
plus 1 channel and documentaries
  • What one thing would you like the BBC do less of?
repeats
  • Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not,why not?
Yes, the programmes I do enjoy are very good. I am concerned the quality of the weather forecast will go down now they have ditched the met office
  • Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not?
its alright I guess, I like that there is no annoying adverts
hannonle · 06/09/2015 11:54
  • Overall, what do you think of the BBC?
I enjoy it and think it does quality programming, esp wildlife documentaries, dramas, news, and weather. I like that iplayer has permanent shows and not just the recent episodes. I use it to play kids programmes on my tablet sometimes. I would watch adult programming more if I had a hooked-up tv.
  • Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee?
I'm happy with the current amount
  • What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of?
I liked the family dramas they used to do on sunday evenings when I was a child. eg, Narnia. I'd like a new series of Russell Howard's Good News.
  • What one thing would you like the BBC do less of?
Trashy gameshows eg Wipeout
  • Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not, why not?
It's mostly good. Any bits I don't like aren't on for long or filling up the schedule.
  • Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not?
Probably distinctive for it's quality, but not necessarily fresh. A lot of 'fresh' programming is American dramas though and I'm glad they stick to British stuff and don't pay massive prices for the imports.
rainbowvalley · 06/09/2015 12:22

Overall, what do you think of the BBC? - I very rarely watch it boring programmes!

Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services - Definitely more than it currently has, since other channels offer a lot more and the licence fee is so high!

What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of? - Engage with what the public want to see a bit more! Also, give a better discount to the elderly or those who are impaired.

What one thing would you like the BBC do less of? - Sport

Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not, why not? - No I do not think what BBC provides is high quality because it's content, does not have the variety which most would aspire to!

Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not? - I think the BBC is stale and out of date with many aspects, trends not changing for decades!

rachelmi · 06/09/2015 12:44

I used to love the BBC. More recently the dramas have declined I love a great drama series like Spooks.
I think the Summer scheduling is very poor.
I think the current licence is too much for what we get.
Finally I think the BBC is soooooo PC especially news is very biased. They bury the true facts.
I prefer other news channels and dramas. Sky is pretty ok.

tamalyn1 · 06/09/2015 12:48

Overall, what do you think of the BBC?

its ok, i rarely watch it these days but i do love the no adverts

Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee?

yes it needs to keep up with the other channels by providing online access

What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of?

scifi

What one thing would you like the BBC do less of?

repeats

Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not, why not?

they can provide some great programs but they seem to be shorter series than other channels and repeat alot

Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not?

no its basically repeats all the time.

StandUnderMyUmbrella · 06/09/2015 13:16
  • Overall, what do you think of the BBC?

Its a traditional service that i wouldn't want to lose but it is very outdated and needs modernizing.

  • Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee?

At the price it is, then yes, more services.

  • What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of?

More reality tv, more drama and music programmes. A weekday morning programme to rival This Morning could be a good start.

  • What one thing would you like the BBC do less of?

Teen programmes, spin offs (from Eastenders etc). They are too alternative and dont work.

  • Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not, why not?

Its not worth the tv licence. Not enough high quality to make it valuable.

  • Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not?

No, it is old and outdated. Alot of things seem to be aimed at much older people.

toodles60 · 06/09/2015 13:18

Bold: "Overall, what do you think of the BBC?"

I'm sorry but i'm not one who believes we should have to pay a license fee for 1 tv channel when all the rest have to pay for themselves and i also have to pay Virgin media. I agree its good the BBC dont have adverts but not having those adverts cost us a lot of money. A tv tax. For those who don't watch the BBC at all there should be a choice of blocking it so they don't have to pay the tax. I'm not one of them as i do sometimes watch the channel but not often enough to justify the fee. I'm a huge F1 fan and was hugely disappointed when they failed to put up enough to be able to show all races. They're the only channel getting paid by us. Why did we not get all races?

Bold: "Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee?"

It should produce much much more. Its being held up by the public unlike other stations and so should in reality aim higher to prove that money is being spent for the benefit of the public to enhance their viewing experience.

Bold: "What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of?"

Movies. Very sparse on this channel.

Bold:" What one thing would you like the BBC do less of?"

Repeats.

Bold: "Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not, why not?"

Half a dozen of one etc Some shows are high quality and some just seem to be hastily put together to fill a time gap.

Bold: "
Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not?"

I don't believe the programming is distinctive and fresh. There are some good shows on the channel but overall there is nothing that stands out for me.

I realise i've shot myself in the foot re competition because i haven't said positive things about them. But its the truth as i see it and i won't compromise on that

libra101 · 06/09/2015 13:37

Overall I think the BBC provides excellent service for a low costing licence fee. British TV is the best in the world and the reporting, investigative journalism, news analysis, sport, along with lighter entertainment, such as Strictly Come Dancing, and dramas such as Poldark make for superb viewing.

In my opinion, the BBC should continue with the above agenda, including radio and iplayer, all included in the licence fee. The price of £145.50 per year (just over £12 a month) is exceedingly good value for the amount of entertainment viewers receive.

The BBC produce programmes of such high quality, we are the envy of the world. Live broadcasts continue throughout 24 hours. If you switch on the TV at 5 am, news and financial affairs are being broadcast, along with financial analysis. All entertaining viewing due to the excellent journalists and presenters on screen. BBC reporting should be unbiased in every way, with viewers given facts to they can decide for themselves.

BBC programmes are not continuously being interrupted by advertvertisements as commercial TV programmes are, and I consider the BBC to be good value.

One comment I would add is that the salaries of chief executives should not be excessive, cost is important. But, in my opinion, long may the BBC reign, we would be lost without it!

Albiebee · 06/09/2015 13:47
  • Overall, what do you think of the BBC?
Overall I enjoy a lot of the programming, and am proud that it is something the Uk does well. I am happy to pay the licence fee. I do not approve of the petty politicking and push and shove of charter renewal and government bullying. Oversight is necessary - but is hardly politically independent if one party can pull the funding when in power.
  • Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee?
I watched some of the curated Pop Art archive on player and really enjoyed it. It would be great to get access to more of the archive shows online, it's a great resource and should be more available via licence fee. Perhaps the licence fee loophole could be cut so that online access is more stringently controlled to stop abuse of it.
  • What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of? Good drama - long running dramas allowing storylines to develop (not soaps!) Science programmes that are not dumbed down, documentaries used to have a lot more information in them than they do now. Most of the content of BBC 4.
  • What one thing would you like the BBC do less of? Quiz shows, soap style drama, and those tie-in shows for the big shows like Strictly and Bake off, where they talk about what happened in the show - cheap tv presumably.
  • Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not, why not? Mostly quality is high but they also fill up the airways with cheap chat shows about shows and variations on antique show formats.
  • Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not? It is distinctive, and parts of it like 6 Music, and the recent Slow TV experiment definitely felt fresh and interesting.
AnimalAddict · 06/09/2015 14:09

Overall, what do you think of the BBC?
I dislike it immensely. The vast majority of their programmes are rubbish, they are incredibly PC and their news is laughably biased.

Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee?
In an ideal world I wouldn't be paying the licence fee at all, but I definitely think they need to provide more services because the licence fee isn't worth it.

What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of?
Original Dramas.

What one thing would you like the BBC do less of?
Less repeats.

Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not, why not?
Not really. Maybe a few years ago but it just lacks quality now. The only great quality show they have is Peaky Blinders. The fact I can only think of one thing says a lot.

Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not?
Not at all. In these times with the likes of Netflix & Amazon Prime.. BBC seem to be completely outdated and archaic. There are far too many channels and subscription services out there that put BBC to shame.

EmmaMeach2 · 06/09/2015 14:50
  • Overall, what do you think of the BBC?
I think the BBC has a fairly good range of programs that suit most genres and most ages.
  • Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee?
I've got to be honest, I think there was a need for online viewing I.e the iplayer now that is here I would say there is probably not much more I would expect from the BBC
  • What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of?
Possibly sport, however I am aware that the contracts of showing sport is in high demand and the competition is high so I don't expect that the BBC will show much more than they do now.
  • What one thing would you like the BBC do less of?
Nothing in particular I think the BBC has a vast array of services and programs as it is.
  • Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not, why not?
Yes I suppose it is.
  • Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not?
I think it is in some of the new ideas they come up with, however I think they still have a fair amount of slightly older viewers that will watch/listen the classics on the BBC so this just shows how accessible the BBC is to all kinds of people.
