Overall, what do you think of the BBC?
I think it needs a bit of a shake up, there just seems to be the same people presenting the same old tired formats.
Also, when it comes to sports coverage, unless the UK or Usain Bolt are competing, you rarely get to see other nations or athletes. Instead you are subjected to the inane drivel of ex-athletes rather than trained sports commentators or journalists and you miss all the action which in itself fails to capture the excitement of an event. If I have a choice, and an event is being shown on the BBC and Eurosport at the same time (e.g. The Diamond League), I choose to watch Eurosport.
- Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee?
I think that the BBC should show a more diverse range of sports, for instance, the recent Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles was barely mentioned (and that was only online) despite 7000 athletes from 177 countries competing and Team GB winning 68 gold, 69 silver and 42 bronze medals. Perhaps a dedicated BBC Sport channel is needed?
- What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of?
Accept scripts and programme ideas from people who don't have an agent or have friends in the BBC commissioning department. I believe this would revolutionise the BBC and, bearing in mind the British public pay an awful lot towards its upkeep, they should have a hand in the programmes that are produced. Amazon Prime ask their audience what they would like to watch.
- What one thing would you like the BBC do less of?
The same faces cropping up time and time again on celebrity panel shows or presenting programmes that you know they are just reading from an autocue and have no background or experience in whatever it is they're talking about. It's like there is one agent who is the flavour of the month and all their clients are booked by the BBC.
- Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not, why not?
Sometimes, but a lot is so formulaic. Panel shows (with the same faces), cookery shows where the cooks are basically promoting a book even though said book is not even published by the BBC (The Hairy Bikers are a prime example of this) so it's just a glorified advert. I really don't know how they get away with it considering there are such strict rules around advertising and product placement on the BBC!
- Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not?
I think BBC3 very distinctive, even though I am older than their target audience is the best channel the BBC has. There are so many fantastic dramas and documentries that are often eventually shown on BBC1/2 that would have never been commisioned if they had been originally pitched for the main BBC channels.
For instance Murdered By My Boyfriend won a BAFTA, Billie JD Porter, Stacey Dooley and Reggie Yates have all presented insightful and thought-provoking reports on non-mainstream topics. It would be a travisty if BBC3 was hidden away online because I know for a fact that if these programmes were only available via iPlayer, I wouldn't have watched them. They also generate a huge amount of presence on social media, particularly twitter. This would be lost if the BBC do away with BBC3. Save BBC3!
