We've been asked by the BBC Trust to find out what Mumsnetters would like to see from the BBC in future.

The BBC Trust says "Over the next eighteen months, really important decisions are being made about the future of the BBC. The Government is reviewing the BBC’s Royal Charter, the foundation on which the BBC is built. This happens once in a decade, so it’s a rare chance for you, who pay for the BBC, to have your say on its future."

Please let us know your answers to the questions below:

  • Overall, what do you think of the BBC?
  • Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee?
  • What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of?
  • What one thing would you like the BBC do less of?
  • Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not, why not?
  • Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not?

Please also feel free to add any other comments you have. If you’d like to share more of your views on the future of the BBC you can complete the BBC Trust’s short survey: www.bbc.co.uk/tomorrowsbbc

Everyone who posts on the thread will be entered into a prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win a £300 Love2Shop voucher*

Thanks and good luck,

  • Overall, what do you think of the BBC?
On the whole it offers a good range of programmes.
  • Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee?
Yes, I think to make it competitive it needs to offer more services for the licence fee.
  • What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of?
Top quality live football.
  • What one thing would you like the BBC do less of?
Celebrity themed programmes.
  • Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not, why not?
On the whole, yes I think the BBC does provide high quality. Particularly the news and documentaries. I also love the Great British Bake Off and Match of the day as well as countryfile and the antiques roadshow.
  • Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not?
I believe that sometimes the BBC is guilty of trying to turn their presenters into celebrities. The BBC holds onto its traditional feel with fresh presentation.

  • Overall, what do you think of the BBC?
We enjoy the BBC, the children love Cbeebies and I particularly enjoy Bbc3
  • Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee?
We probably do not get value for money with our license fee, however we are lucky enough (being in London) not to need to rely on the local radio services. However I appreciate how important these are to others so don't think you should change the services you provide.
  • What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of?
Fresh comedy, fun documentaries (ie don't tell the bride, sun sea suspicious parents etc) Bringing more BBC3 programmes to mainstream,
  • What one thing would you like the BBC do less of?
Not sure as I'm a flicker so don't religiously watch.
  • Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not, why not?
Yes, we never have any problems viewing.
  • Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not?
It can be, we love new shows so don't hold back in trialling these.

- Overall, what do you think of the BBC?

I really like it. We watch BBC 1 & 2 more than any other channels, and I think that quality wise it's far above any other privately run channel.

- Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee?

The license fee does seem quite high in relation to what we get, but since iPlayer it's felt like the value is better. I would like to have more on demand - for example, the boxsets like Channel 4 do on 4OD, particularly of classic shows.

- What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of?

More educational shows directed at a younger audience - we love the Christmas lecture, and I'd like to see more things like this throughout the year.

- What one thing would you like the BBC do less of?

Less spending on soap operas, which are widely available on other channels anyway.

- Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not, why not?

Mainly, yes. The nature documentaries are superb, and the radio channels are distinctive with great presenters. We're massive fans of Doctor Who and Strictly in this house, and the investment there has certainly paid off. However, the daytime shows are too formulaic (antiques, house buying, quiz shows) and are starting to feel a little tired.

- Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not?

On the whole, yes, but the trust needs to ensure they don't rest on their laurels and keep pushing forward and innovating.

Overall, what do you think of the BBC?
I really like the BBC, I think it offers mainly good quality programmes with a wide variety.

  • Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee? I think it provides the right level of services.
  • What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of? Make programmes available for longer on iplayer - they remove them too quickly whereas a provider like All 4 make them available for a very long time
  • What one thing would you like the BBC do less of? not sure!
  • Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not, why not? Yes, they have great dramas and thrillers and series. They also have great documentaries.
  • Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not? I think so, they keep coming up with modern programmes. I would like some more documentaries like Channel 4, however I've really enjoyed the disability series that was on BBC3 recently.

  • Overall, what do you think of the BBC?
I love it and want it to always to be there, as it is now.
  • Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee?
I think it provides brilliant value for money, and wonder if it would be hard for them to provide the same quality but more services. As I live rurally I can't access iplayer and online services can be very slow, so please remember these people when planning things. We rely on the TV and radio in order to access the BBC
  • What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of?-Things like Wolf Hall. Educational but entertaining. The Olympic coverage was also outstanding!
  • What one thing would you like the BBC do less of?- programmes like "Pound Wars" and the one where you followed Laurence Llewelyn trying to sell his products to shops in China- you are basically providing free advertising for private businesses.
  • Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not, why not?
Yes, I feel it's extremely high quality, you can't beat it, other channels don't have the same professionalism and quality.
  • Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not?
Yes I do think it's distinctive, as I said earlier it is the quality and professionalism which make the BBC. I think it is becoming more "fresh". I have noticed in the last year or so that more women are presenting shows, which is a good thing. I listen to Today on Radio 4 each morning and it is good to hear more woman presenting that show. Until recently it was very lacking in women's voices. So keep that up please!
timeforabrewnow · 05/09/2015 10:00

Love the Open University programmes on science and maths etc and also love the fact that there is no advertising on the BBC. So support paying the license fee still.

As for being fresh and distinctive I think they should stop doing re-runs of Dad's Army ad infinitum - how about a few re-runs of the fast show instead??

asuwere · 05/09/2015 15:14
  • Overall, what do you think of the BBC?
I think its OK. DC love cbeebies but there are only a couple of things I watch on BBC.
  • Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee?
I don't like paying the licence fee based on the few things we watch on BBC. I would rather the fee went down and the services reduced. I've tried to use iPlayer a few times but things don't stay on for long which isn't great, channel 4, you can pretty much watch anything on catch up. Also doesn't seem fair that those who don't pay a licence fee can still access all extras like iPlayer.
  • What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of?
Not sure
  • What one thing would you like the BBC do less of?
Sport
  • Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not, why not?
Same as most channels, some good things, some not. Depends a lot on personal taste too.
  • Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not?
Not hugely more distinctive than any other channel.
slithytove · 05/09/2015 16:45
  • Overall, what do you think of the BBC?
i think it isn't for me, it's s good service but I resent paying for something I don't use
  • Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee?
i think you should make the licence fee and therefore the service an opt in one. I'm sure for someone who uses it, it is a good service
  • What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of?
good telly, there is a serious lack of it
  • What one thing would you like the BBC do less of?
pay so much to staff
  • Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not, why not?
complete mix in quality to be honest
  • Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not?
no i think it's dated and boring
SirNiallDementia · 05/09/2015 22:09
  • Overall, what do you think of the BBC?
Produces some good quality and original programmes. BBC radio stations are far better than any others.
  • Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee?
Should focus on quality not quantity so less services.
  • What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of?
Programmes for older children
  • What one thing would you like the BBC do less of?
Repeats of old comedies!
  • Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not, why not?
Yes
  • Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not?
Yes

Yes, from excellent news coverage and current affairs on BBC Radio 4 through to great dramas and entertainment on BBC 1.
  • Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not?
I do think that BBC is distinctive and fresh.
Princessxo · 05/09/2015 23:34

Overall, what do you think of the BBC?

I think they're okay as a whole. Not the best, but not the worst either.

Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee?

I think the availability of the services should be reflected on the license fee. Right now there's a time limit on how long you can catch up on iPlayer, things like that.

What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of?

Quality football catch up. More drama series - but original stuff, something they can get a deal on.

What one thing would you like the BBC do less of?

Haven't thought about this

Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not, why not?

To be honest, some of their stuff is indeed high quality like Strictly Come Dancing etc. but when it comes to drama etc. it has a lot of competition, and sometimes it lack in certain areas.

Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not?

I think they try to compete so much with their rivals like ITV that they're made to seem like copycats. I haven't seen any special stuff from them that is wholly unique if I have to be honest.

ElectroNymph · 06/09/2015 06:29

I like the BBC very much. I regularly listen to 5 Live and enjoy BBC 4 and the sports coverage. I do think there should be more LGBT and minority representation, as well as fewer employees from Eton, Oxford, Cambridge etc.

ThemisA · 06/09/2015 06:53

Q. Overall, what do you think of the BBC?

A. I enjoy BBC, especially documentaries and a few panel games 'Would I Lie To You' and the occasional trip down memory lane 'Cagney & Lacey'

Q. Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services

A. I am happy with the BBC as it is

Q. What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of?

A. I wish they would make some more traditional children's series

Q. What one thing would you like the BBC do less of?

A. I am not a fan of the really old films on BBC2 particularly

Q. Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not, why not?

A. On the whole the BBC still offers high quality material. It provides a range of material from documentaries, to human interest ('Who Do You Think You Are'), wild life, right down to lighter weight material - something for most people

Q. Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not? Yes, without being too fragmented and bite sized or uncomfortably avant-garde

barbsbarbs · 06/09/2015 07:08

I really love the bbc dramas and like the fact that there is no adverts, but i also hate paying the tv license. I think we get value for money for the bbc.

createbeauty · 06/09/2015 08:03
  • Overall, what do you think of the BBC?
I think the BBC is okay, but should we really have to keep paying a license fee for it? I don't watch it that often...
  • Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee?
MORE! £12 a month is A LOT of money for what the BBC provides.
  • What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of?
More new shows and movies that are actually interesting.
  • What one thing would you like the BBC do less of?
Crappy radio stations.
  • Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not, why not?
I think some of the stuff is high quality... a lot of it is just not appealing to me, however.
  • Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not?
No, not really. I think it's quite old and needs some revamping.
maryandbuzz1 · 06/09/2015 08:15

Generally I think the BBC is great but I think there are too many repeats or rehashes where we watch almost all a repeated programme for the presenter then to revisit at the end.
The amount of services the BBC offers is varied and I would be happy with it remaining the same.
I would like to see more outdoor broadcasting. This is something the BBC a excels at along with historical drama.
Less game shows and reality rehashes.
The quality of the BBC is good. Facts are usually correct.
It is distinctive although new ideas are sometimes lacking and programmes can become tit for tat in response to other channels which spoils its freshness.

nhopkins90 · 06/09/2015 08:19

The BBC is ok, but I think it should be optional as to whether you want to pay for a TV licence. It funds overpriced "celebrities" and is out of touch with today's society.

I think it should provide more service (e.g. tell your radio presenters on R1 to talk less and play more music!).

I'd like the BBC to make better shows. I probably watch 1-2 BBC shows per year, but have to pay an extortionate TV licence!

I would like the TV licence to be reduced.

No, I barely watch any of the shows because they aren't of interest. The "entertainment" isn't great.

No, I think it needs an overhaul. I think people also resent how much they have to pay. I'd rather watch Netflix than the BBC.

jt75 · 06/09/2015 08:46

I like some documentaries and drama and some comedy. However BBC has dumbed down considerably. I don't watch anything with so called celebrities, many programmes are spoiled by infantile commentary and intrusive music. Too many shots of the presenter wandering around or driving a car. I would like to see arts programmes broadcast at a reasonable hour not at 11pm. Not interested in extra service except for iplayer, I still think BBC provides the best programmes. I wouldn't watch if I had to sit through annoying adverts.

janeyf1 · 06/09/2015 08:51

Overall, what do you think of the BBC? I like and respect the BBC

Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee? More

What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of? Drama

What one thing would you like the BBC do less of? Soaps

Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not, why not? Yes I do - BBC provides the highest quality drama and entertainment. Strong cast, directors and producers.

Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not? Yes, BBC is distinctive because it is very British and doesn't rely on cheap adverts

KittyKat88 · 06/09/2015 08:58

I would miss the BBC if it disappeared, but I do think the overall quality of shows has deteriorated as they have tried to compete with the commercial or subscription channels

  • Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee?
I think the balance is right at the moment - although I think that BBC3 and BBC4 could probably be online services only though
  • What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of?
Home-grown comedy shows
  • What one thing would you like the BBC do less of?
High entertainment shows like The Voice
  • Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not, why not?
Overall, I would say high quality, but too much of their output in recent years has been hit & miss.
  • Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not?
I don't think they are distinctive any more, sadly. I don't think they have moved enough with the times, and actually I have a real problem with how they have used the proceeds from the licence fee in the last few years e.g. big payoffs for executive staff.
happysouls · 06/09/2015 09:02
  • Overall, what do you think of the BBC?
I think it provides an essential service making higher quality programs that are maybe more appreciated by minoritys (like me). Therefore without the licence fee these wouldn't be made because everything is driven by popularity and money!
  • Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee?
I don't know.
  • What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of?
I don't know what one thing, all I know is that I very much enjoy the occasional great quality drama and lots of the documentarys.
  • What one thing would you like the BBC do less of?
I don't know. I hardly watch any TV and I pick very specific programs to watch so I don't see anything I don't like.
  • Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not, why not?
Yes, the things I watch are great quality and I think without the licence fee they maybe wouldn't be made.
  • Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not?
Yes, I think not being driven by advertising, viewing figures etc leaves it free to concentrate on quality.
Ingles2 · 06/09/2015 09:19
  • Overall, what do you think of the BBC?
On the whole, I think the BBC provides a good service.. I enjoy a wide range of programmes
  • Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee?
It would be fantastic if programmes were available on i player for longer but otherwise I am happy.
  • What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of?
Long running radio drama Intelligent historical tv drama..
  • What one thing would you like the BBC do less of?
Reality rubbish
  • Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why?
On the whole yes, I think there is quite a lot of cheap filling daytime though If not, why not?
  • Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not?
It's distinctive definitely.. As it currently appears the highlight of this autumn is another series of strictly come dancing.. You can't call it fresh! Grin
lizd31 · 06/09/2015 09:46

I think that the BBC has some great dramas but, other than that & Strictly Come Dancing, I rarely watch it so I begrudge paying the license fee when I pay for Sky & watch more programmes from that

myusername12345 · 06/09/2015 09:52
  • Overall, what do you think of the BBC?
I love the BBC, and I think we should be proud of it as a national asset.
  • Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee?
I think it's about right, although the online offering could be reduced.
  • What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of?
Original drama and comedy, blue chip programming like natural history.
  • What one thing would you like the BBC do less of?
Soap operas, reality daytime trashy shows, repeats on the main channels
  • Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not, why not?
For high budget shows yes, but it is noticeable that budgets for some programmes are being constantly cut and you can tell when things are self-shot by Producer/Directors and made in a hurry.
  • Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not?
Not necessarily fresh, as the BBC tends to follow rather than lead.
Ganne1 · 06/09/2015 09:56

Please let us know your answers to the questions below:

  • Overall, what do you think of the BBC? Very good, and worth the money
  • Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee? The same as now
  • What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of? Good comedy instead of the largely puerile output at present
  • What one thing would you like the BBC do less of? Politics
  • Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not, why not? Yes, as it appeals to most fmailies
  • Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not? It's the BBC, it was the first in most things, it's Britain, it's original and up-to-date ... and largely trustworthy
