We've been asked by the BBC Trust to find out what Mumsnetters would like to see from the BBC in future.

The BBC Trust says "Over the next eighteen months, really important decisions are being made about the future of the BBC. The Government is reviewing the BBC’s Royal Charter, the foundation on which the BBC is built. This happens once in a decade, so it’s a rare chance for you, who pay for the BBC, to have your say on its future."

Please let us know your answers to the questions below:

  • Overall, what do you think of the BBC?
  • Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee?
  • What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of?
  • What one thing would you like the BBC do less of?
  • Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not, why not?
  • Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not?

Please also feel free to add any other comments you have. If you’d like to share more of your views on the future of the BBC you can complete the BBC Trust’s short survey: www.bbc.co.uk/tomorrowsbbc

Everyone who posts on the thread will be entered into a prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win a £300 Love2Shop voucher*

Thanks and good luck,

  1. Overall I don't like the BBC
  2. I think the BBC should provide more programmes for iPlayer
  3. I think the BBC should provide more drama
  4. I think the BBC should put less sports and political programmes on
  5. I don't think the BBC provides high quality programmes. Too many repeats and too many soaps.
  6. I don't think the BBC is distinctive or fresh, in fact I think it's quite boring.

If I'm honest I think the license fee should be scrapped. Other channels don't charge and their programmes are far better than the BBCs propaganda.

zakky7 · 17/09/2015 11:41

I enjoy a handful of programmes the BBC put on but generally I don't watch a lot of it, so I find it slightly annoying paying for the licence fee.

For those who do use the services, though, I think they get good value for money as it there is a lot to choose from.

I would love to see more suspense dramas. And perhaps less teattime rubbish - depressing 'family' shows that bore me.

Yes there are some very high quality shows and fresh content.

  • Overall, what do you think of the BBC?
Outdated service, that wrongly forces everyone to have & pay for a channel they may not want. As with Sky & other TV providers you only pay for what you want. BBC need to look along this direction for the future!
  • Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee?
Much more!
  • What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of?
Better journalism and impartial stories would be appreciated.
  • What one thing would you like the BBC do less of?
News Reports!
  • Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not, why not?
Yes in terms of the wildlife shows which are incredible! No, in terms of bad journalism.
  • Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not?
No, time for a change

Overall, what do you think of the BBC?

Im very fond of the BBC - its a British icon in my opinion.

Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee?

Im happy with the BBC as it is, im not after interaction etc. If i want that i would look elsewhere to be honest.

What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of?

More educational programmes aimed at children. My son is eager to learn and is fascinated with nature, science, history and yet when he comes home from school most of the childrens television shows are lacking that.

What one thing would you like the BBC do less of?

Less negativity in the news, i understand that terrible things are happening all over the world and sometimes we need to be notified of these. But i would also like to see some positivity in the news also.

Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not, why not?

Oh crikeys yes! Much more so than the tripe that 4 and 5 air. No-one wants to watch programmes about "My fat cat's extreme diet" and such like.

Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not?

I think some of the shows are a little stale, i would like to see a different take on interviews, something a little more cutting edge. Having said that we did enjoy the Daniel Radcliffe "Game Changer" feature length.

-Overall, I think quite highly of the BBC- its a national institution.
-I think it should provide more for the licence fee. More online facilities/options. After all its the only channel we have to pay for so I would expect it to provide much better value than the others.
-I would like to see more original drama series- it's something the BBC does particularly well and I would like to see more of them
-I would like to see less of the Celebrity shows eg Strictly. It's trying to compete with ITV but seriously, how much of our licence fee is being wasted on paying these Z list celebs ridiculous amounts!

  • I think the majority of the TV is high quality- certainly compared to some of the rubbish on channel 4 & 5 but the BBC3 stuff is a bit lame, particularly the comedies. Radio is good, a good variety for all tastes/ages.
-I don't think BBC is as fresh as other channels- just look at the quality of some of the paid channel programmes eg Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire. It tends to have a tried & tested formula, safe but edging on boring sometimes. It's distinctive in as far as you know what you are getting when you tune in.

  • Overall, what do you think of the BBC? I think it's a good solid British instutition and produces a lot of top quality programmes and entertainment.
  • Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee?
I think it already provides quite a lot, BBC iPlayer is very good and I use it regularly. I can't see that anything else needs to be provided.
  • What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of?
I enjoy medical dramas and sci-fi dramas so would like to see more of them.
  • What one thing would you like the BBC do less of?
Not sure. I can't think of anything off hand.
  • Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not, why not?
Yes, I do. The programs are well thought out, high quality and the channel is a lot more family friendly than many other channels available. It doesn't have the high levels of trashy reality programmes that many other channels promote either.
  • Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not? Yes I think it is very distinctive and recognised around the world for its high standards. I associate the BBC with top quality programmes and viewing & I do think that although it is a long standing British institution, it has moved with the times too and offers a good selection of intelligent programmes that modern viewers want without resorting to dumbing down that many other channels resort to.
I am very impressed with the BBC as a whole.
piggypoo · 17/09/2015 18:56

Overall, I like the BBC
I think for the services they provide, the licence fee is very expensive, and not value for money.
I'd like the BBC to do more dramas.
There is nothing I can think of that I'd want less of.
I think the programmes are high quality on the whole, but I get sick of seeing the same old faces crop up.
I don't think they come across as fresh, more traditional and corporate, as they've always done.

lucyrobinson · 17/09/2015 20:11
  • Overall, what do you think of the BBC?
I think they have some good factual programmes. Don't watch it that often.
  • Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee?
I don't think we should have a TV licence.
  • What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of?
Good Saturday night TV
  • What one thing would you like the BBC do less of?
Not sure
  • Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not, why not?
There are a few good quality programmes that are worth watching.
  • Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not?
No, I feel it is quite dated
FrenchieMum2Be · 17/09/2015 21:40
  • Overall, what do you think of the BBC? I like it especially the objectivity of the news.
  • Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee? The same would be good.

Signoritawhocansway · 18/09/2015 18:23

- Overall, what do you think of the BBC?
Love it. Really love it. Great radio stations, good I Player, my go-to news site, no adverts.

- Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee?
I think they provide an astonishing amount of service, and I'm more than happy with the service level. If they needed so save money, maybe the 'cult of celebrity' could be pared down a bit!

- What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of?
Period dramas, hospital documentaries, factual programmes. Love Radio 3 and 4 (and 2, mostly)

- What one thing would you like the BBC do less of?
NOT Eat Well for Less - what a load of tosh that is. A few less things like home programmes etc. They are all so samey! Not liking the Voice really - so predictable. Only worth watching in audition rounds, and not at all now because no Tom Jones. Also, didn't enjoy last series of Call the Midwife - trying MUCH to hard to be modern and PC in an age where it wasn't normal. Incredible (in the true sense of the word) story lines.

- Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not, why not?
Sets, props, location, lighting all usually good. Loved Wolf Hall.

- Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not?
I wouldn't call it fresh - as I find it a bit samey and predictable, but it is distinctive.

welshpolarbear · 18/09/2015 19:48
  • Overall, what do you think of the BBC?

I think the BBC is a great institution. Having lived overseas for a couple of years nothing matches the excellent drama, and professionalism of the BBC. It does produce high quality programmes that are great to watch.

  • Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee?
I think more for the licence fee would be great, for instance allowing programmes to be available on the iplayer for longer, also an update of the iplayer would be great, I find it a bit slow and it's really difficult to rewind or fast forward a little bit. I also think that people who choose noot to pay the license fee should not be able to access the content. People who don't pay for sky or netflix can't access their content so why not the same for the BBC.
  • What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of?
More contemporary dramas and nnot just over the winter. I miss them! There also seems to be too much old fashioned style dramas.
  • What one thing would you like the BBC do less of?
Less daytime game shows. It'd be really great to have something more up to date on in the day time.
  • Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not, why not?
Yes, definitely, as I said above I've seen other countries channels which as ver poor incomparison. I value the BBC.
  • Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not?
I don't think it is particularly fresh. It's pretty reliable wih the type of programming it shows. This doesn't make me not enjoy it though.

Thanks for taking our views on this.

Q. Overall, what do you think of the BBC?

On the while I like the BBC, it releases some great original drama and is the home of Doctor Who. I also wouldn't be without CBeebies for my littlest - a life saver.

Q. Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee?

Perhaps limit some of the radio channels. Easy for me to say as I don't listen to much radio though. I actually think that the online service needs to improve. I can't always find programmes I like and when compared to channel 4 it is not great for catching up.

Q. What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of?

More events for example like the CBeebies proms. More things to go publically along to.

Q. What one thing would you like the BBC do less of?

Non stop news coverage or at least depressing news.

Q. Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not, why not?

Yes I do. If you think of programmes such as Doctor who and downton abbey - these dramas are hard to be beaten.

Q. Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not?

No I don't. I do think what they produce is high quality but a lot of it is samey. And they are competing with Netflix and Amazon who are producing some really exciting shows.

  • Overall, what do you think of the BBC?
I used to love BBC but these days I am not a big fan no more
  • Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee?
I don't have a strong opinion about it, if it was just for me... I don't need extra services
  • What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of?
More nature programs... as you are really good at them
  • What one thing would you like the BBC do less of?
Report a real news... for a change
  • Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not, why not?
It used to but in recent years I tend to swap to dofferent news channels, which is a shame
  • Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not?
No... again, it used to but it isn't no more
BodieBroadus · 23/09/2015 10:57

Overall, what do you think of the BBC?
No longer an institution to be proud of.

Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee?
It should concentrate on quality programming instead of more services.

What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of?
Nature programmes.

What one thing would you like the BBC do less of?
Less sport, particularly in the evenings at prime time.

Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not, why not?
Not always. Nature programmes - yes. CBeebies - mostly. News reporting - not at all anymore, I find it really dumbed down and half the "news" is not news at all (too much Royal and sports coverage, as an example).

Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not?
Not at all. Too many repeats, news as dumbed down as other channels. Overall pretty disappointing - I quite resent paying the license fee now, I am sorry to say.

  • Overall, what do you think of the BBC? its ok but could be alot better
  • Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee? better tv series instead of strictly have proper dramas like casualty
  • What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of? Dramas series
  • What one thing would you like the BBC do less of? strictly come dancing and rubbish like that. Stop interrupting casualty to put the proms or something on put them on bbc2 as no one watches bbc 2 anyway
  • Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not, why not? No its average would expect a lot better shows than what they put on
  • Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not? No its old school
Cherrybellyboo · 28/09/2015 08:41
  • Overall, what do you think of the BBC?overal I like it. I used to love it but in the news in the last year i have seen some political bias, and has made me wonder what else they are biased towards when giving the news. We love cbeebies. It is quite a high fee when you cant opt out of it without opting out of all tv.
  • Do you think the BBC should provide more or less services (e.g. TV, online, iPlayer, radio) for the licence fee? Less radio, and more iplayer services.
  • What one thing would you like to see the BBC do more of? Period dramas
  • What one thing would you like the BBC do less of? Depressing adult tv. Like eastenders.
  • Do you think what the BBC provides is high quality? If yes, why? If not, why not?generally, most series and tv are well done. Radio seems to have barely changed over the years and other than radio 1 most of the radio we get here is talking or for older people.
  • Do you think the BBC is distinctive and fresh? If yes, why? If not, why not?
Distinctive yes,but fresh probably not, it doesnt seem to have changed much in the last few years.
