Fingers crossed it will soon be BBQ season - and as part of their #LidlSurprises campaign, the team at Lidl would love to hear about your surprising BBQ successes.

Lidl say "With BBQ season hopefully upon us soon, we'd love to hear from Mumsnetters with fabulous ideas for how to make your BBQ a summer sensation! We're really excited to be working with Mumsnet to promote the range of BBQ items available in Lidl - everything from salads, to meats and dessert ideas - but we know you probably have a genius idea up your sleeve to make even the most basic foods into a BBQ treat. Surprise us!"

So what's surprisingly good on the BBQ? Could be a fairly everyday dish that's even better grilled in the open air, or something that you'd never have thought of barbecuing until you tried it - or just a particular combination of ingredients that seem to sing when cooked on the BBQ?

What reaction did you get from the hungry hordes? Why were you surprised it worked - and would you try it again? Tell us how long you cooked it for, and if it's a bit complicated please do share the recipe. Any photos are VERY welcome!

Add your surprisingly good BBQ food below - savoury or sweet - and you'll be entered into a prize draw where 5 MNers will win each £50 of Lidl vouchers.

Please note your comments may be included on Lidl's pages on MN, their social media channels, and possibly elsewhere, so please only post if you're comfortable with this.

Thanks & good luck,
MNHQ

Halloumi skewers. Goes down a real treat, gets lots of veg into everyone and DD now asks for it on 'indoor' days too.

kungfupidge · 18/06/2015 19:39

Lulabellx1 · 18/06/2015 20:18

Sardines. Whole sardines brushed with olive oil and slung on the BBQ... heaven!! :)

Danso · 18/06/2015 20:36

Indonesian Chicken sate skewers, simply the best (chicken breast pieces marinated in a homemade Indonesian sate sauce).

lilmiztam22 · 18/06/2015 22:40

Fruit! You can BBQ fruit and it tastes delicious especially bananas, a healthy tasty summer treat that is really surprisingly good!

StickChildNumberTwo · 18/06/2015 23:07

Salmon and veg kebabs - skewers with chunks of salmon, mushroom, pepper courgette etc. Yummy and a great non-meat option (do without salmon for veggies).

Lamb Tikka chunks, tomatoes, red onions slices, thin red/green pepper strips (or chillies), all cooked on the BBQ, topped with herbs & a squeeze of lemon juice ... to be served with a dash of BBQ or Reggae-Reggae sauce and a cool Brew!

I know it has been mentioned 400 times, but banana with chocolate and marshmallows in tinfoil. Mmmmm...

Also chocolate and marshmallow in digestives- like s'mores.

But the best things in the BBQ are the simplest. Chunks of red pepper, onion, asparagus and serve with feta or even just on any meat you are having. Or fresh caught mackerel.

Lent1l · 19/06/2015 09:20

Seems it is not so unusual and several people have already mentioned but pineapple gets my vote. Perfect sprinkled with a mix of sugar and cinnamon.

Ambrosia- Whipped cream 9 or greek yogurt, marshmellows, fresh blueberries, strawberries all mixed together with a flake crumbled on top.

JoCar72 · 19/06/2015 11:44

I recently tried BBQ'ing some Jordans Country Crisp Chunky Nuts and served them up with some sweet honey syrup...they were absolutely gorgeous :) You have to think outside the cereal box sometimes! x

ours is home-made meatballs skin 8 sausages add chopped onion, paprika, sage and onion stuffing and a oxo cube mix together and the pop on bbq to cook and add to whatever you fancy

bmbetu · 19/06/2015 14:43

Sweet potato, scored, with cinnamon sprinkled on and olive oil rubbed on skin, wrapped in foil. Takes about 20 mins from raw - delicious and sweet, almost pudding-like!

Greensmurf1 · 19/06/2015 19:06

If you can find a "fish basket" which is a metal grill tool that sandwiches your whole fish in a wire mesh rack, it's really easy to turn fish on the BBQ. Whole sea bass with lemon slices and herbs like thyme and fennel stuffed in the belly is delicious. It's ready when the fish is white and flakey. It needs to be done over hot coals without flame or it will burn. A little oil on the outside helps.
Oily fishes like mackerel and sardines do well on the BBQ. They stay moist and pick up a nice smokey flavour. Check out what is sustainable at the moment.

Soak some bamboo skewers and pop on a marshmallow to toast over the coals before they finally cool.

Stick a potato wrapped in heavy foil with salt, pepper and veg oil in amongst the coals at the start of the BBQ before you cook the rest of the food. after 30 min or so depending on the size, it will be a tasty side dish.

The husband's BBQ rabbit recipe:
4 rabbit loin fillets cut in to 1" pieces
Large tablespoon of peanut butter
Large tablespoon of yellow bean paste
2 cloves of garlic, crushed
1 teaspoon of rice wine
1 teaspoon of soy sauce

Mix together in a bowl and leave to marinade for a few hours

Bbq for about 3 minutes a side then enjoy
Everyone's squeamish about trying rabbit at first, but it always goes down brilliantly and they all come back for seconds!

HALLOUMI CHEESE! Just amazing!!!

GetKnitted · 19/06/2015 21:51

pineapple sausages :D

CK12232 · 19/06/2015 22:07

Chicken drumsticks marinated in beer, paprika and parsley (and a few other bits)

ashlawrencerye · 20/06/2015 07:29

This one I inherited from my Mum, who was made aware of it thanks to some 90's cooking show - but Bacon Wrapped Bananas are the best BBQ food! I appreciate that they sound truly awful, but next time you have a BBQ try peeling a banana, wrapping it in streaky bacon, and BBQing on both sides - it's AMAZING, whenever I can convince someone to try it, they're completely won over! I have no idea if this is a main, a side dish, or a dessert... but I can eat several of them in one sitting!

Summergarden · 20/06/2015 07:49

Corn on the cob is very popular at our BBQS. Healthy, too which is an added bonus.

purplepandas · 20/06/2015 14:21

Halloumi burgers, yum!

MrsSchadenfreude · 20/06/2015 17:40

I make peanut burgers for the vegetarians, because I think everyone deserves a good burger at a barbecue, and most vegetarians I know get a bit tired of the veg kebab/halloumi/enormous mushroom option. They can fall apart a bit if they are not squidged together sufficiently well (a burger press helps), so I usually dry fry them in a frying pan on the cooker first, to put a bit of colour in their cheeks, and finish them off on foil on the barbecue. They are very good plain, but I sometimes add very finely chopped chilli to give them a bit of a zing.

Unfortunately for the vegetarians, they are very popular with everyone/people want to try them as they are something different, so I usually make a lot, and make sure the veggies get theirs first.

KING PRAWN SKEWERS WITH SWEET CHILLI SAUCE, COOKED IN FOIL! YUM :-)

EmNix · 20/06/2015 21:16

Gammon and pineapple. Tasty

SweetPeaPods · 20/06/2015 23:14

Halloumi cheese is a must on a BBQ, the chilli halloumi is even better on a BBQ.
I marinade chicken in oil, honey, garlic & soy sauce. It's lovely and tasty and great for children or adults.
