Fingers crossed it will soon be BBQ season - and as part of their #LidlSurprises campaign, the team at Lidl would love to hear about your surprising BBQ successes.

Lidl say "With BBQ season hopefully upon us soon, we'd love to hear from Mumsnetters with fabulous ideas for how to make your BBQ a summer sensation! We're really excited to be working with Mumsnet to promote the range of BBQ items available in Lidl - everything from salads, to meats and dessert ideas - but we know you probably have a genius idea up your sleeve to make even the most basic foods into a BBQ treat. Surprise us!"

So what's surprisingly good on the BBQ? Could be a fairly everyday dish that's even better grilled in the open air, or something that you'd never have thought of barbecuing until you tried it - or just a particular combination of ingredients that seem to sing when cooked on the BBQ?

What reaction did you get from the hungry hordes? Why were you surprised it worked - and would you try it again? Tell us how long you cooked it for, and if it's a bit complicated please do share the recipe. Any photos are VERY welcome!

Add your surprisingly good BBQ food below - savoury or sweet - and you'll be entered into a prize draw where 5 MNers will win each £50 of Lidl vouchers.

Please note your comments may be included on Lidl's pages on MN, their social media channels, and possibly elsewhere, so please only post if you're comfortable with this.

Thanks & good luck,
MNHQ

Banana Marsbar - don't peel banana, make a slit legnthways and insert chopped up bits of marsbar. Then push back together, wrap in tinfoil and place on bbq - yum! :)

Havent done this for a long time, though DH go to BBQ / Grill idea is tuna mixed with mayonnaise & seasoned. Choose your bread; panini / ciabatta / plain sliced, doesnt matter. Butter the, Spread some sweet chilli sauce on the bottom, unbuttered, side of bread, then the tuna mixture, handful of mozzeralla & bit more sweet chilli. Put the other slice of bread on top, buttered side up. BBQ until both sides are a golden brown. Delicious with a lovely salad and glass of wine.

Butter the bread

Split a banana in half, put a Flake inside and add some cream and sherry. Wrap in foil and BBQ till soft

Scewers made with halloumi, pepper, red onion, mushroom and peppers. Look colourful and taste great. Nice contract to the usual burgers/sausages.

Nojox · 21/06/2015 19:24

Courgette black pepper and a drizzle of olive oil. The blacker and more burnt the yummier!

compy99 · 21/06/2015 21:40

roasted red peppers stuffed with rice, red onion, garlic and chick peas

Mrdarcyswife · 21/06/2015 22:07

I love veggie kebabs- courgettes, peppers, mushrooms and aubergine- yum!

My dad's hot and spicy sticky ribs go down a treat for our family BBQs; they can be a bit messy to eat but if you lose one, the family dog enjoys them to!

We love bananas cooked in their skins with chocolate buttons strategically placed under the skin and a couple of teasons of fussells condensed milk drizzled under the skin for the last 5 minutes. Mouthwateringly good!

VIKKI20 · 21/06/2015 22:41

Hoi sin pork belly. Nom nom

llynnnn · 21/06/2015 23:33

Tinned new potatoes on skewers are my secret, ideal for camping bbq as don't take long and they go lovely and crispy on the outside. The only way to eat tinned pots imho! Wink

babybat · 22/06/2015 10:24

Sweet potatoes - I usually start them off in the oven or microwave, then wrap them in foil with a bit of butter and a sprig of rosemary and pop them on the barbecue to finish cooking. They go really well with sausages and burgers, and make a nice change to cold side dishes.

backtoworkblues · 22/06/2015 11:18

I love Haloumi and Aubergine kebabs on the bbq, and even better from lidl they are under £2 to make! Cut into 1 inch cubes and time allowing marinate them in oil, garlic and Oregano. Thread on skewers and put on the barbie, turning occasionally for 5-10 minutes until chargrilled. Top tip is to pre soak your wooden skewers so they're less likely to burn. Yum!

silky80 · 22/06/2015 15:57

Barbecued beetroot, gets a really smoky finish, then just chop up and add to burgers, salads

lottietiger · 22/06/2015 17:54

Definitely kebabs on skewers. its great to get the kids involved with choosing items for their skewers and you make them spicy for grown ups, or use only veggies for non meat eaters. We also do fruit ones with banana and pineapple quickly grilled with some chocolate sauce.

luckyxxbunny · 22/06/2015 20:27

Carrot dogs!
Healthier than regular hot dogs and suitable for veggie and vegans (recipe was given to me by a vegan friend)
They are super yummy :)

MostlyColouringIn · 22/06/2015 21:33

Bruschetta! Toast bread one side on BBQ, turn over, put toppings on toasted side, allow other side to toast and toppings warm through at the same time! Lush with chopped tomatoes, basil and mozzarella.

buckley1983 · 22/06/2015 22:02

Minted lamb chops are divine on the BBQ! For budding, I'm going with the masses - sliced banana with chocolate wrapped in foil - I also chuck in a few marshmallows for good measure! x

bettythebuilder · 22/06/2015 23:22

We barbecue whenever possible, even simple pork chops with a bit of seasoning are so much tastier barbecued than grilled.
Cherry tomatoes threaded on a skewer and barbecued for a few minutes are lovely, my daughter loves them.
Yes to the barbecued bananas, no need to peel just make a slit through the skins, pop in some chocolate (and a drizzle of orange liquer for the grown-ups!) and wrap in foil. You absolutely have to roast a few marshmallows over the embers, too.

wendymurray3 · 23/06/2015 08:12

Take a banana, keeping the skin on score down the inside curve and insert some Cadbury's whole nut or Galaxy hazelnut chocolate squares into the scored banana. Close back up and wrap the banana in foil and bbq for 5-10 minutes.

You will then taste the divine flavour of bbq'd melted banana, with nutty chocolate. Delicious!

mclarkie · 23/06/2015 10:49

Squid marinaded in Garlic, chilli and 7up.

Kandboys · 23/06/2015 13:29

You can't beat a classic chicken skewer! Marinade the chicken in whichever sauce you like then add it to the skewer with peppers or pineapple!

LizzieMMM · 23/06/2015 13:43

Bananas stuffed with peanut butter - messy but nice

castleton · 23/06/2015 16:39

I love BBQ sausages with BBQ pneapple

sarah3875 · 23/06/2015 16:45

A nice pasta mixed with mayo and lemon juice. With a red pepper and green apple cut in. Perfect!
