Fingers crossed it will soon be BBQ season - and as part of their #LidlSurprises campaign, the team at Lidl would love to hear about your surprising BBQ successes.

Lidl say "With BBQ season hopefully upon us soon, we'd love to hear from Mumsnetters with fabulous ideas for how to make your BBQ a summer sensation! We're really excited to be working with Mumsnet to promote the range of BBQ items available in Lidl - everything from salads, to meats and dessert ideas - but we know you probably have a genius idea up your sleeve to make even the most basic foods into a BBQ treat. Surprise us!"

So what's surprisingly good on the BBQ? Could be a fairly everyday dish that's even better grilled in the open air, or something that you'd never have thought of barbecuing until you tried it - or just a particular combination of ingredients that seem to sing when cooked on the BBQ?

What reaction did you get from the hungry hordes? Why were you surprised it worked - and would you try it again? Tell us how long you cooked it for, and if it's a bit complicated please do share the recipe. Any photos are VERY welcome!

Add your surprisingly good BBQ food below - savoury or sweet - and you'll be entered into a prize draw where 5 MNers will win each £50 of Lidl vouchers.

Please note your comments may be included on Lidl's pages on MN, their social media channels, and possibly elsewhere, so please only post if you're comfortable with this.

Thanks & good luck,
MNHQ

Marshmallow, strawberry & banana on a skewer then when grilled, dip it in melted white chocolate - heaven!

jt75 · 23/06/2015 21:13

I like corn on the cob.

ksouthcott · 23/06/2015 21:15

Banana cut a slit in it, put pieces of chocolate it, wrap in foil and stick on the BBQ, yummy when all melted and gooey!

LittleDunnock · 23/06/2015 22:27

Haloumi cheese. Why don't Lidl stock it all summer & not just during Greek week & a few weeks after! Oh, & frozen corn on the cob, everywhere else sells it & it's brilliant, a quick blitz in the microwave & finished to perfection til caramelised on the BBQ, dribbled in butter & chilli flakes!

Red peppers halved and stuffed with cherry tomatoes, pesto, garlic and olive oil

Season salmon fillets and rub with a little garlic butter. Lay a bed of sliced lemon and sprigs of dill in tin foil and BBQ the salmon on top of them to infuse the fish with all that lovely flavour. For a veggie side dish fold a large piece of foil in half and crimp the sides to make a bowl & poke a few holes in the base. Fill with the veg, any herbs you like and put these on the BBQ too. When done you'll have lovely smokey BBQ'd veg and beautifully cooked salmon with very little mess to clean up!!

soozybee1 · 24/06/2015 09:26

We also do the split banana, also with an apple too for my best mate who doesn't like bananas

prettybird · 24/06/2015 09:46

Not so much the food itself - but when bbqing, throw some sprigs of rosemary onto the coals for a lovely smell that will infuse the food.

thesoupdragon44 · 24/06/2015 11:24

I have never tried making smores, on the BBQ till recently such a simple ide of two biscuits and marshmallow, but we were surprised how moreish they were!

keshimonster · 24/06/2015 11:58

I like to start a BBQ with some grilled halloumi and then have lamb kebab sticks made with lamb steaks, peppers and mushrooms - delicious!

NettleTea · 24/06/2015 12:08

Ethan260908 · 24/06/2015 13:17

duckbilled · 24/06/2015 14:11

I like to half a mango and drizzle it with honey, then pop on the bbq. It is delicious with chicken or fish.

Eva50 · 24/06/2015 14:43

Salmon fillets. Just add salt pepper and butter and cook in foil. Delicious!

badgermum · 24/06/2015 15:26

Grilled Halloumi Cheese and vegetable skewers are so tasty, and the meat eaters like them as much as the vegeterians as they taste so good, Simple to make just slice halloumi, and cut a red pepper and a yellow pepper into chunks, slice a courgetter and add some button mushrooms place into a large bowl and coat in olive oil and season then thread them onto kebab skewers, barbecue for 5 or 6 minutes on each side, until golden and cooked through. YUMMY!

matphil · 24/06/2015 15:44

I like to make lots of different kebabs using chunks of meat, (chicken, turkey, pork and beef) and a selection of vegetables, (mini tomatoes, courgette, beetroot, peppers, mushrooms).
They taste delicious, can be marinaded if you like and you can have all different kinds of combinations.

notjusttheirmum · 24/06/2015 16:30

banana, cut down the middle & put chocolate buttons on, wrap in foil & put on for a few minutes, nothing beats a gooey desert!

cherithamy · 24/06/2015 17:13

Turkey satey kebabs with peanut dipping sause.
BBQ bananas with mars bar melting in them or with double cream and brow sugar! Yummy!

samdobson · 24/06/2015 17:49

it has to be chocolate banana splits!!! once the food is nearly cooked, slice a banana down the middle, lay inside a handful of chocolate buttons. Wrap the banana in foil and place on the bbq while you tuck into the first bit. Then when its pudding time carefully unwrap the foil and you'll have amazing warm banana filled with melted chocolate!!
They taste absolutely amazing and the kids go wild for them!!

natcat7000 · 24/06/2015 18:00
