Nurofen for Children have asked us to find out what makes Mumsnetters and their DCs feel better when they’re feeling under the weather during the winter months.

Here’s what Nurofen says, “Both adults and children may experience a sniffle or two this winter, but the whole family wants to feel their best to make the most of the festive season. From Halloween to Christmas, there are plenty of family occasions to enjoy during the colder months and being holed up in the house is no fun for anybody. If you or your children are struck down with cold or flu, Nurofen offers a range of products to help manage both adult and child symptoms including fever, sore throats, headaches and minor body aches.”

So, what do you do to help yourself and your DCs feel better when you are (both) down with a winter bug? Do you tuck yourself under multiple covers on the couch and put on a marathon of your favourite TV show? Perhaps you have a special recipe which you reserve for when you’re feeling under the weather which you find keeps you going? Or maybe a hot bath does the trick for you and your DC? Whatever it is, we’d love to hear it.

Everyone who leaves their comments below will be entered into a prize draw to win a £250 Love2Shop voucher.

Thanks and good luck,

MNHQ

A good shower to help clear the sinuses

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 20/11/2014 11:26

Well...if I have a cough that won't go away, I have a hot totty...not really something you can give the kids though!

Fill a mug hal-way with a tablespoon of honey in just-boiled water, squirt of lemon, top up mug with cold water and then put a dash (or two!) of whiskey. Relaxing, the honey and lemon soothes your throat, and you can go to sleep easier.

Random acts of kindness (often bizarre) that my 4 year old does. A recent example is bringing me a stick with some leaves on, from out of the garden, to "help me feel better". It always brings a smile to my face and I feel better for a few minutes.

LinnyBee · 20/11/2014 13:32

My kids always make me cards when I'm unwell, and they never fail to make me smile Smile

A lovely hot bubble bath followed by curling up on the sofa wrapped in a big blanket, watching a few DVDs & some chicken soup.

bucksmum71 · 20/11/2014 14:53

Clean PJs, Duvet on sofa, hugh grant movies and an endless supply of mint tea!

Granna123 · 20/11/2014 15:33

The first thing to make me feel better is a great big hug, the biggest you can imagine, that's so much better than anything else. Then a lovely cup of tea, just the colour I like, no making do with second best! Then a cuddly throw over me on the sofa with as many that will fit in, then Disney films for the afternoon. If it's a really bad day and P makes the dinner I feel really looked after especially if he has bought some treats home. I just need to feel cared for to feel a whole lot better.

Chop an onion leave in some liquid honey until honey becomes even more runny. Sieve & have a tablespoon every four hours

chrismse · 20/11/2014 16:02

On the couch with a cosy blanket and a glass of hot lemonade. Mum always gave us hot lemonade when we were ill so now its pretty much a habit in my house too.

ButterflyOfFreedom · 20/11/2014 16:16

For me it would be a nice cup of tea!
A bubble bath & tomato soup (not at the same time obvs!) helps too.

DH would say lazing under the duvet watching zombie films!

DC just want lots of cuddles and milk"

ilovereading · 20/11/2014 16:52

Nice warm baths with lavender bubbles (DC) or essence (me); kids' Nurofen dosed as required, especially at night, and Olbas oil dripped on to a couple of clean tissues and hidden inside DC's pillows at night, to help the breathing through a blocked nose. I also prop child up on an extra pillow at night - which seems to help with nasal congestion.

Chicken soup, multivitamin and echinacea supplements, and perhaps a few doses of Metatone later on, if still feeling all-washed-out. Plenty of fresh fruits and veg. too. Ice lollies or frozen smoothie/ yoghurt tubes go down well when appetite is low and extra liquids are needed (but not being taken). 'Smoozes' are always wonderful, especially the mango ones! Plenty of Vaseline or Lipice on sore/ chapped lips helps too.

Distractions are key for DC: somehow most aches and pains recede into the distance when he gets absorbed in Minecraft or other electronic game of the moment.... so perhaps one or two extra sessions on these to take his mind off the misery and make it seem more temporary.

Hot lemon and honey and loads of movies

coco2303 · 20/11/2014 18:33

We make chicken soup carribean style using peppers and scotch bonnet. Not spicy but enough to open you up lol.if my daughter has a temperature she will have calpol or nurofen, we both have a cols at the moment so we have been using olbas bubble bath, snuffle babe's for my daughter and vapour rub for me :).

purplevamp · 20/11/2014 19:39

A big mug of tea, a huge slab of chocolate and the tv all to myself. I also wrap myself in a slanket and have loads of cushions and pillows around me on the sofa.

matphil · 20/11/2014 20:16

Have a hot bath and snuggle up on the sofa with a fleecy blanket. Have some hot tea, chicken soup and plenty of chocolate.

09babisham · 20/11/2014 20:47

I like to have a warm bath with Olbas oil in it to clear my nose, then a hot cup of chocolate, couple of paracetamol and plenty of sympathy and cuddles

milkpudding · 20/11/2014 21:00

Warm pyjamas
Duvet and hot water bottle
Simple food like mashed potatoes
Undemanding movie

brocher · 20/11/2014 21:27

Just getting over a bug at the moment - can't face food, so someone else doing the shopping, cooking etc is a godsend, even if just for a day!

wendymurray3 · 20/11/2014 21:28

A large bowl of my home made lentil soup with a dash of Tabasco.Cured many an ailment :)

Drania · 20/11/2014 21:29

Sleep, orange squash and soup - always!

bcd2009 · 20/11/2014 22:27

Hot chicken soup, a cold and flu drink, a hot shower to wash off all the germs and a few of hours snuggled up in bed in my favourite pyjamas and cuddly socks leaving my husband to look after the boys.

ineedausername · 20/11/2014 22:35

Heating on, lots of homemade soup, neurofen for the one who will take it, the either will only have calpol!
Put on comfy pjs, a movie and bring the duvets downstairs

LordJabuJabu · 21/11/2014 05:11

Being unwell is the ONLY time original flavoured lucozade tastes good!

Tradition in our home (never usually ill) is a litre of lucozade, a packet of ricola & something minty (personally, humbugs), snuggled up on the sofa/bed with a duvet, couple of magazines & a free pass from child wrangling/house work...

Eldest son, 2, has a duvet day on the sofa with unlimited milk & hugs.

meandjulio · 21/11/2014 05:14

Curling up in bed at around 7pm, with a proper hankie that is soft on my nose.

becde · 21/11/2014 13:08

My boyfriend looking after me, he runs me a hot bath with candles and bath oil and looks after the kids while i relax
