We've been asked by Ready brek to find out about MNers' best porridge based recipes and healthy breakfast creations

Ready brek says "Coinciding with the launch of Ready brek's 'easy sachets' collection, we'd love to hear about how MNers customise their porridge. In tasty Original and delicious Chocolate and Gingerbread flavours, and made only from finely milled oats, vitamins and minerals, this hot oat cereal delivers all the benefits of an adult porridge, but without the lumps. Easy to make in the microwave or with hot milk this kids' porridge gives your children a tasty warming start to the day. But the Ready brek oats can be used for so much more than just porridge. One look at the Ready brek and Weetabix website shows just how versatile these oats can be. From Ready brek breakfast muffins, to 'ginger-brek men', there's hundreds of ways you can make your cereal go further."

So, how do you customise your porridge or Ready brek? Maybe you add some bananas? Or do you prefer to add blueberries or raspberries? Perhaps honey is your usual addition? Whatever you add to your porridge, Ready brek would love to hear about how you keep breakfast time fun and healthy.

If you don't usually have porridge for breakfast, do you have any porridge based recipes? Perhaps you like to add porridge oats when you're baking cookies? Or maybe you'd rather use your porridge oats for flapjacks? Let Ready brek know what your favourite porridge based recipes are.

Every MNer who posts on this thread will go into a prize draw to win £250 from Ready brek and Weetabix.

Thanks,
MNHQ

Most of the time I just add honey and bananas but for a real treat now and again I add a large dollop of chocolate hazelnut spread, delish!

Stars66 · 14/09/2014 12:49

shawbarbara · 14/09/2014 14:52

mrsmilesmatheson · 14/09/2014 15:36

fazkin · 14/09/2014 15:45

angiesandhu1 · 14/09/2014 17:02

zipzap · 14/09/2014 17:32

I don't like cooked porridge regardless of whether it's made with milk or water and no matter how many gallons of cream or golden syrup are added.

However I do like it made with fruit juice - cranberry is my favourite - I do it the night before and leave overnight in the fridge and it's pretty good. I might stir in a spoon or two of yoghurt or cream, and/or chop in fruit or add raisins or seeds etc but it depends how much of a hurry I'm in.

I also make fruit smoothies and will throw in a spoonful of oats - it makes the smoothie creamy without the need for milk.

However the best use I have found for oats is to make chocolate orange bars with them - my favourite kind of biscuit/cake (sort of half way between the two). I'd happily eat them for breakfast every morning but as they also have lots of butter they're an occasional treat instead!

Oh my! I am going out for ready break!

Always the sachets in the microwave with milk (scrubbing the scorched milk off the bottom of the saucepan puts me off otherwise!). I am quite particular about it being made with milk - made with water it is gruel, not porridge, which tastes empty and not creamy enough. I also prefer finely milled oats without the husks that ruin the creaminess (ready break is perfect).

DDs like white sugar left on top until it becomes a syrup. I intensely dislike this.

We all love Nutella, golden syrup, maple syrup with toasted pecans, apple and cinnamon, brown sugar and nutmeg, plums stewed in brown sugar nutmeg cinnamon and a dash of port, whatever jam is in the fridge.

I really want to enjoy fresh berries, but again, I intensely hate the sensation of creamy porridge with bitty bits (unless cooked eg stewed or jam).

I love the sound of real butter, I am going to try this for supper, I had never considered having savoury porridge!

Tyranasaurus · 14/09/2014 17:57

golden syrup, or dates and almond butter

GiveMeCheesecake · 14/09/2014 18:45

Maple syrup.

I could eat maple syrup on everything. Blush

PastaBow · 14/09/2014 18:49

2 year old DD has raisins in her Ready Brek.

6 month old DS has apple purée made with apples from my tree in his. I freeze them in cubes so it helps the porridge cool down quicker too!

sscrase · 14/09/2014 20:43

Just milk and a little sugar. Couldn't eat it with anything else added.

ItStillLooksLikeRainDear · 14/09/2014 22:34

My DS is 4 and every morning it's porridge with blueberries! Any other suggestions or combinations just won't do! Dd wants a different breakfast everyday though!

KenDoddsDadsDog · 14/09/2014 22:47

Always cinnamon and a pinch of salt . I love it but it makes me feel tired for some reason so only have it at weekends.

Kem99 · 14/09/2014 23:18

I top it off with bran flakes. Have it every morning without fail, just love it.

Cantdothisagain · 15/09/2014 09:26

Nutella... Or scattered with berries... Or both!

An old uni friend used to add butter - weird.

zinher · 15/09/2014 09:47

While milk, banana, cashew nuts and raisins

SuzfromSoton · 15/09/2014 10:12

Kids just have a bit of jam but I like to add toasted nuts. :-)

elizaco · 15/09/2014 10:37

Sultanas or honey :-)

Julie2146 · 15/09/2014 12:24

I usually sprinkle mine with brown sugar.....delicious!

Loula117 · 15/09/2014 12:55

I make rosehip syrup (it's the right time to collect these now), the kids love it on porridge and whilst it's sweet it also has loads of vitamin C!

Moogdroog · 15/09/2014 13:23

If I'm feeling decadent (or in need of comfort) I add a spoonful of Nutella. Sour cherries in syrup is jolly nice too. Ordinarily though, it's a bit of chopped up banana.

gemma143 · 15/09/2014 14:50

Lots of chopped up fruit, whatever needs using up, satsuma orange segments are also a big favourite, the sweetness is just right to liven up the oaty taste.

Placeinthesun · 15/09/2014 16:26

I put a slection of different things on the table for the kids to add themselves - dried coconut flakes, seeds, dried fruit like cranberries/sultanas/blueberries,, homemade fruit compote they can stir thru, grated apple with some cinamon sprinkled on it, slices of fresh fruit like banana if have in etc.

Nutella to stir thru' it is a lazy sunday treat!

micra · 15/09/2014 17:42

Syrup!
