NOW CLOSED: Tell us who's the messiest in your house (honest, now!) £100 IKEA vouchers up for grabs!

Hello. We been asked by IKEA to find out who you reckon is the messiest person in your house.

Do you agree with comedian Tiffany Stevenson, who says, in the new IKEA ad, that "the only thing a man will ever clear out is his internet history"?

Or do you wince with Blush recognition at Paul Pirie's umbraged-male retort: "Shoes, shoes, shoes! What are you, a centipede?"

Please post on this thread to tell us who's the 'floordrobe'-owner in your house - the more scruffy, cluttery, bomb-gone-off detail, the better! Everyone who does will be in with a chance to win £100 in IKEA vouchers.

Oh, and IKEA is running a Facebook poll, too, if you fancy casting your vote.

Thanks - and good luck! MNHQ

My DH without any doubt. The most annoying thing he does is that he will never lift the lid of the laundry basket and put in his dirty clothes oh no he likes to place said dirty clothes on top of the lid. I find it infuriating!

TrillianAstra · 01/04/2011 19:17

Me.

But DP and I are messy in different ways. I will leave large #'s of shoes around the house (he doesn't have enough pairs of shoes to do that!) but he is less likely to take his morning coffee mug to the kitchen before he goes to work.

brookeslay · 01/04/2011 19:19

We are all as bad as each other. Toddler has taken over use of all our storage there are kitchen toys, living room toys, bathroom toys and bedroom toys. Any piece of furniture that isn`t nailed down get moved footstools turned upside to provide mini climing frames, dining chairs are turned into make shift slides.
His favourite habit is hiding dvds and you may find these anywhere around the house.

My DP is a paper holder of letters, statements and collected tat i`m sure he has the plans of the ARK in there somewhere some are so old. Statements from long closed bank accounts and will even take paperwork his DAD throws out.
The worse is his long hair he has been growing it for three years and it falls out everywhere ten times worse than any dog I can assure you.

I am also the keeper of tatty bits of paper not bills, statements but ticket stubbs, leaflets , restaurant bills. I do hope sometime to stick them into a scrap book so our life history is recorded. Strangely that day never comes !!!

All 4 of us but 14 yr dd old just about tips (geddit?) the balance

brookeslay · 01/04/2011 19:20

paper holder * should read hoarder

doughnutty · 01/04/2011 19:20

None of us are tidy by nature. I think we're all as bad as each other. DS has an excuse (he's 1) but DH and I are very good at creating piles of 'stuff' which has no known home, and moaning at each other for not putting said stuff away!!

I, however, am definitely cleaner than DH who wipes and hoovers round things, including the aforementioned piles of stuff.

bluebump · 01/04/2011 19:23

My toddler without a doubt, he knows it drives my DP up the wall if he makes a terrible mess so that's just what he does.

I'm a bit of a hoarder but it's an organised mess I like to think, and at least my house is clean just a bit cluttered!

TheMonster · 01/04/2011 19:26

DP. Why oh why can't he put things in the bin? How is it easier to put things on the worksurface NEXT TO the bin and wait for me to put it in the bin for him?

ChaosTrulyReigns · 01/04/2011 19:27

It would be difficult to work out which of my DCs are the messiest, as they combine to form a spinning vortex of mishmashedmayhem.

They are partial to edifying science experiments usually involving closed containers and food remnants.

[unimpressed]

gottasmile · 01/04/2011 19:28

My dd (almost 3) is the messiest creature in the world. She leaves trails of crumbs, yoghurt or whatever she has eaten all over the house, even if she's eaten at the table! She seems to be able to spread the contents of her room all over the house too, in a matter of minutes.
Dh is a close second with the mess under his chair after he's eaten. You would think a 1 year old had been sitting in his chair! So frustrating having to tell a grown man to eat over his plate!!!

Bicnod · 01/04/2011 19:30

My husband. Definitely. Some examples of his sins against tidiness:

  1. He stores piles of clothes (mixture of dirty and clean), magazines, snotty tissues , dirty mugs and other items on the floor along his side of the bed.
  1. If he cooks he uses every, and I mean every pot, pan and utensil in the kitchen. He cannot wash up as he goes along, it is simply not possible for him to multi-task to this degree. If he then attempts to clean up after himself he will always forget to wipe the surfaces and will always leave at least one pan and several random items unwashed. He is definitely not a completer finisher.
  1. When he comes in from work he dumps the contents of his suit pockets (keys, change, travelcard, receipts, scrumpled up bits of paper, sweet wrappers etc) on our chest of drawers in the bedroom. It drives me insane so I bought him a nice little bowl to put it all in. He has filled the bowl up with crap and still dumps the contents of his pockets on the chest of drawers.

He is brilliant in a million other ways though (luckily).

Lilyloo · 01/04/2011 19:31

My ds without a doubt i have gradually removed items from his room so there is less to mess , he failed to notice a toy castle that he had been stepping over for years.
But it's the crusty bogies on the bedding and walls that makes me wince.

sunchild77 · 01/04/2011 19:35

Im the messiest...by far. At least my DD and DS have the excuse of being 5 and 3 years old. My whole house is messy, but my bedroom is the biggest state, and Id hate for anyone to come and inspect my house without at least a weeks advance warning...... I am incapable of hanging clothes up or putting stuff away. There are coffee mugs on the floor, water glasses spilling over, make up and toiletries on window ledges. Cupboards and drawers are rarely shut. There are magazines and books in piles on the floor. Finally, an overflowing wash basket and unmade bed (clean! but always unmade!) tops the list.
My own mother would have a heart attack if she saw it..... She has OCD about tidyness and has given up on me, her slovenly "Slutty" daughter (her words not mine) I rebelled big time.... LOL

ShouldersBackAndNoBiscuits · 01/04/2011 19:39

Me. I am terrible at putting things away, especially baskets of clean clothes. MInd you, DH 'tidies' things away and immediately forgets what he's moved and where he's put it, which is worse than filing it on the floor, if you ask me!

TheAtterySquash · 01/04/2011 19:42

My dcs are both freakishly tidy. I am not, by nature. So it's probably me. ds (4) pointed out to me yesterday that I had left my knickers on the floor of my bedroom Blush

Tortoise · 01/04/2011 19:47

I would say DD1 and DD2. Their room is like a bomb site! Everytime i sort it (after weeks of hassling them to do it), within minutes there is stuff on the floor again!

tethersend · 01/04/2011 19:53

We're all as bad as each other. Our house currently resembles 9/12.

TobyLerone · 01/04/2011 19:55

My son. His floor is always covered with tools and bits of scooter. He's 11.

TheSkiingGardener · 01/04/2011 20:00

The husband.

One clearout of his floordrobe found 12 tops and 14 boxer shorts and enough socks to create a sock puppet choir.

And he had been complaining that the washing wasn't very efficient.

missorinoco · 01/04/2011 20:02

My 3 y.o. son and my 2 year old daughter tie for first place.

CMOTdibbler · 01/04/2011 20:05

The cats are the outright winners, but currently ds is winning, esp tonight as he is having a sleepover, and he and his friend have just tipped out a whole box of toys....

TitsalinaBumSquash · 01/04/2011 20:08

DS2 (4) is the mess maker in this house, he refuses point blank to tidy up.
DS1 (6) will tidy begrudgingly when asked.
I am anal very tidy all the time.

FriggFRIGG · 01/04/2011 20:16

its me,most defiantly ME!
i am slovenly.

my 2 year old tidy's up after me Blush

DP is the king of clear outs, and it looks like DD is taking after him...

she's very good at putting her toys back in her trofast units...they are life savers...

i want one for my stuff...Grin

onadietcokebreak · 01/04/2011 20:16

Me! I leave everything everywhere. I blame the lack of room/storage but basically Im just a messy slattern!

magnolia74 · 01/04/2011 20:17

Definately my 11 year old twin girls!!!

I thought having a teenager would be awful as far as mess goes but 15 yr old dd1 is pretty good its the twins that are awful.

They spend so much time arguing over who made the mess that they run out of time to tidy it up HmmGrin
