NOW CLOSED: Tell us who's the messiest in your house (honest, now!) £100 IKEA vouchers up for grabs!

Hello. We been asked by IKEA to find out who you reckon is the messiest person in your house.

Do you agree with comedian Tiffany Stevenson, who says, in the new IKEA ad, that "the only thing a man will ever clear out is his internet history"?

Or do you wince with Blush recognition at Paul Pirie's umbraged-male retort: "Shoes, shoes, shoes! What are you, a centipede?"

Please post on this thread to tell us who's the 'floordrobe'-owner in your house - the more scruffy, cluttery, bomb-gone-off detail, the better! Everyone who does will be in with a chance to win £100 in IKEA vouchers.

Oh, and IKEA is running a Facebook poll, too, if you fancy casting your vote.

Thanks - and good luck! MNHQ

It's me. But that's only because I'm so very busy and important and lovely obviously. My desk at work is notorious too - colleagues describe it as a heap but I can find everything (given 1/2 an hour and a headtorch)

SoupDragon · 01/04/2011 17:39

This is a hotly contested competition in the Dragon house.

I think DD (5) comes bottom of the untidyness pile. Unless you count the cats - they are pretty tidy.

Then comes the Dog, who has a habit of stealing socks and leaving the all over the garden.

I will put myself next, but only because I do make an effort to try and be tidy, no matter how unsuccessful this may be, and also because I have to clear up after everyone else.

Second to top comes DS2 (10) with DS1 (12) top of the tree. They are pretty close together though. I believe they both have carpet in their rooms but they have not been seen for some time.

MikeRotch · 01/04/2011 17:40

It's all a matter of perception here. H thinks he's tidy. He just likes piles. We once had a defendant in court who said ge hadn't returned his section 172 speeding thing as " my wife likes to put things in piles"

We all nodded sagely.

Mamaz0n · 01/04/2011 17:43

Me. definatly me.
I own the floordrobe, i sling my dirty kecks across the floor and he ends up with them stuck to his feet.

But in my defence i am the one that hs to come along later and clear it all up so im allowed.

5inthebed · 01/04/2011 17:43

My DS2, definitely! He has autism, and doesn't understand the whole "tidy up" thing. He throws wrappers on the floor, his bedroom is littered with clothes and toys, and if he drops anything around the house he will just ignore it and leave it where it lands. I am forever picking up after him.

AlmaMartyr · 01/04/2011 17:44

My 2 year old daughter is definitely the one who makes the most mess but she does also like to tidy up after herself (can't always say the same about DH).

CoffeeGoneColdAgain · 01/04/2011 17:44

We are all as bad as each other here! Dp leaves boxers, socks etc draped over the bed, floor and landing. Ds leaves his clothes wherever they land and Dd is just as bad! Wish I had a cleaning fairy! :o

TheVisitor · 01/04/2011 17:44

My 12 year old triplets without a doubt. Despite many years of nagging, they still create devastation wherever they go, particularly the two boys. We find socks in random places around the house. Bedrooms get tidied, and the next day the floor is a sea of clothes, rubbish and general detritus. We find pants in the storage boxes under the boys' bed. Sometimes I swear they crawl out by themselves.

Sparkles23 · 01/04/2011 17:50

My husband is definitely the messiest, his used rugby/gym/running kit automatically goes under the stairs when he gets home (not the wash basket/machine like normal people!) and unless I retrieve it it stays there festering, thankfully the most it's been there is a week (ie until next rugby session) but long enough! Once he left his kit bag down the club over the weekend and inadvertently brought a poor little mouse (who had nestled in there nicely!) home in it - the cat thought all her Christmases had come at once, I got the shock of my life - managed to get the cat away from it!

DoodleAlley · 01/04/2011 17:50

I think I look like the messiest because I do leave things around but when I tidy up at least I do it properly. DH thinks if it's in a pile it's tidied up and that if it's shoved in a less used room it's tidied up!

So I think DH! But I'm sure he'd disagree!

LoveBeingKnockedUp · 01/04/2011 17:53

Me without doubt. I have a floorobe complete with sections. However I tidy up after dd and moan at dh for the slighest thing out of place Blush

WowOoo · 01/04/2011 17:55

I am. I leave a trail of destruction everywhere I go. I do eventually clear it all up though. But have to try really hard not to be messy.

scrappydappydoo · 01/04/2011 17:56

Well probably dd2 who's at the 3 year old get one thing out, spread it all around then get another thing out and spread it all around etc etc.
However even though I'm not particularly messy I am rubbish at clearing up so we live in squalor.

GentleOtter · 01/04/2011 17:57

I think it is a draw between dh and ds2. They outmess each other and I am glad this thread has come up as I am fresh from a rant as well as being on complete strike apart from feeding ds and the washing of.

Dh always brings the cowshed in to the house and leaves trails of oats, calf nuts, hay and straw everywhere he walks. You can tell which season it is from the feed in the bathroom, kitchen and everything. - where he undresses.

Our paperwork system is a set of several (torn) Tesco bags, the contents of which try to make their own way to the tax office or down the side of the sofa.

I fail to understand the logic in his carefully placing empty milk/ juice cartons back in the fridge.
Or why our living room looks like an agricultural supply depot with prolapse harnesses, bits of tractors long gone, fan belts....

Sorry to haver but the worst part is that he thinks he is the tidy one.

toddlerama · 01/04/2011 17:58

I have a horrible suspicion that it's me, but I spend so much time haranguing everyone else that they assume I didn't do it. Like decoy nagging Blush

madhairday · 01/04/2011 18:00

DS who is 7 is the messiest creature I have ever known.

In fact he gave us a good excuse t'other day when the tooth fairy 'forgot' (the one round here is hopeless, really) We told him it was probably because she had nowhere to land safely in his room Grin

He tidied up that night

Not for long though.

helpingout · 01/04/2011 18:02

My DH wins hands down, even beating DD (4) and DS (1).

Bless him, he's a great cook but the kitchen ends up looking like a war-torn country afterwards.

I've even gone as far as getting him his own large shoe box to put all his things in to save us tripping over discarded shoes in the hallway, bedroom and even bathroom! But does he use it? No, and continues to leave them all over the place and even in the kids' cupboard (frustrating the DD when she can't find her school shoes cause all dad's stinky trainers are in the way!)

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 01/04/2011 18:03

DD by far. She wanders around the flat leaving cast-off toys/clothing/bits of food in her wake despite being constantly reminded to pick up after herself.

I figure I should probably be disqualified from the draw though as I work for IKEA? It'd be nice to be able to buy the stuff I sell though (we have some truly lovely new fabrics in atm Smile)

JarethTheGoblinKing · 01/04/2011 18:04

DP would probably say it's me, as I happily leave towering piles of clothes in our bedroom and a days worth of washing up to be done..

I argue that it's DS, as he's 3yo and owns duplo and playmobil which he plays with by scattering ALL over the living room/hall until there is barely room to move. Thankfully all of it gets shoved back in the trofast drawers at the end of the day!

ksld · 01/04/2011 18:05

I think it's me! I have enthusiams where everything gets sorted out and it all looks lovely and tidy, then I need something at the bottom of a pile, and mess it all up again.

I once decided to sort out the airing cupboard and stacked all the towels back in on one shelf neatly rolled up, ends on show. It looked amazing! Then I needed a towel from the middle and the whole lot fell out, I nearly cried, and towels just get shoved in any old how again.

shmoz · 01/04/2011 18:06

Oh god, me without a doubt.

I seem to spend half my life moving things from room to room without actually managing to put them away - mind you, on the rare occasion that said items are put away they will immediately activate their invisible shield.
Please note: This shield can only be deactivated under the following conditions:

  1. Suitable amount of time has been wasted looking for item
  2. Substantial amount of money has been parted with in replacing the item.

Best not to put things away IMO.

missmyoldname · 01/04/2011 18:07

DH by a long chalk. He has the disadvantage of being brought up in a very big very messy house with plenty of junk rooms/big garage etc. We live in a very small house and I don't think DH can come to terms with this!

I think subconsciously he has to have multiples of things - so 5 fleece jumpers, 4 pairs of running shoes, 3 bike helmets, 10 ever-so-slightly different pairs of shorts, 6 rucksacks etc etc. He also like to have piles of magazines, and likes to make impromtu storage boxes - getting empty butter cartons, and filling them with piles of crap that have been left lying around by him.

Plus, he doesn't understand the concept that even if you are going to use an item again within the next 7 days, you can still put it away in the meantime.

On the upside, I am quite messy too, but feel positively anal about tidiness comapred to DH!

Indith · 01/04/2011 18:07

Me without a doubt.

Dh is fairly tidy, the 4 year old goes mental if someone puts his toys in the wrong box and the 2 year old grabs plates and cups and takes them back ot the kitchen the instant tehy are finished with. Me? I have stuff coming out of my ears. Piles of paperwork to be filed later, stuff all over the sides int eh kitchen, laundry mountains waiting to be folded. I am a magnet for stuff. The floor by my side of the bed in our room is covered with clothes. Jumpers that have been worn once, socks and pants hiding under various pj bottoms. The top of the chest of drawers is littered with hairbrushes, creams, earrings and make up. I don't know how he puts up with me Grin

snorkie · 01/04/2011 18:09

Teenage dd I reckon, though it's a close run thing. None of us are neat freaks by a long way.

BornToFolk · 01/04/2011 18:10

DS but only because he's 3! DP and I have really similar levels of mess-tolerance and both do similar amounts around the house - it's the main reason why our relationship works! Grin
