Channel 4 have asked Mumsnet to find out what you think about their new series of One Born Every Minute (starting today, Monday 10th January at 9pm). We've recruited a special panel of volunteer viewers to add their comments to this thread. The panel are a mix of Mumsnetters, all of whom are parents, some pregnant, some not, some have seen the programme before, others haven't.

They would also love any other Mumsnetters - ie folks NOT in the panel - to add their comments here. Anyone who contributes to this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one winner, drawn at random, will win a £50 Amazon voucher.

We'll also be having a thread after the second programme, next Monday.

So, please post your thoughts and comments on the programme below. We'd welcome 'live' feedback during the broadcast as well as a comment at the end. If you can't post during the broadcast please add your thoughts by the end of Tues Jan 11th.

If you are a panel member please identify yourself as one when you first post.

Many thanks and enjoy!

I wouldn't have wanted a midwife in with me all the time for DS (DC3) as I would've found it intrusive. I'm not sure if I would've wanted constant MW attention for the other either, to be honest. Are you supposed to have a MW with you all the time?

Felt sorry for Ralph, should have been the one going in with her.

TheLogLady · 10/01/2011 22:52

Janet is very calm because she too has an epidural (you can see the tape up her back).

turnipvontrapp · 10/01/2011 22:53

I wanted the midwife to stay with me forever, including coming home with me! Grin

Swaliswan · 10/01/2011 22:56

I would've liked the midwife to have been there when I got 'that pushy feeling' but I've had to buzz all three times. Other than that I'm happy to get on with labouring by myself. I get quite crotchety with all the poking, prodding and listening into the baby that disturbs my flow during labour. I don't fancy catching my own baby though.

TheLogLady · 10/01/2011 22:57

why is that brand new, minutes old, baby in a plastic box and not snuggled up to either it's mum or dad?

TheLogLady · 10/01/2011 22:58

forceps i think.

Swaliswan · 10/01/2011 22:59

It was forceps according to the life begins website which is now up and running.

pah! who needs official websites when you have me? Grin Grin

TheLogLady · 10/01/2011 23:01

and bless Ralph for sobbing over his new babe. got even me going there.

TheLogLady · 10/01/2011 23:03

oh one thing i do like is there isn't some 'sleb' doing a voice over and explaining 18 times over what just happened and what will happen in the next 10 minutes like so many documentary tpes do.

TheLogLady · 10/01/2011 23:09

and after being rather positive there for a minute why the fuck is formula milk allowed to be advertised during this programme? Shock

aristocat · 10/01/2011 23:11

agree that the midwives are lovely Smile ...... can they be this nice all the time?
mine certainly weren't when i had DCs!

onadietcokebreak · 10/01/2011 23:12

I did not like the way Ralph was left out. Janet appears very cold towards towards him

CointreauVersial · 10/01/2011 23:18

Not on the panel but thought I'd add my comments. Aww....lovely! Brings it all back! Hmm

I can't believe they all lay on their backs - I just wanted to be upright, leaning forward, ANYTHING rather than on my back. I'm positive it got things moving and helped with the pain. And I'm sure I was encouraged to move around by my MW.

I had to laugh at Steph saying she was exhausted - well, that's what screaming at the top of your lungs for several hours does to you.

And Ralph crying, oh how sweet. I notice when he was let into the operating theatre he made a beeline for his son, barely noticed Janet, though.

Roll on next week.....

NellieForbush · 10/01/2011 23:20

Janet is absolutely fucked. Physically and emotionally. Poor girl, really feel for the women who labour for days then end up in theatre. So lets not worry too much about Ralph.

Those two midwives are just lovely. So old school. I would have them any day.

Can't seem to watch these programmes without shedding a few tears.

Rindercella · 10/01/2011 23:23

Late to the thread. Just seen it on 4+1.

Love OBEM. This time last year I was 7 months pg with DD2 and was in tears watching it. This year I was still in tears! I just have that overwhelming urge to blub when seeing a new life be born.

I really like the MWs chatting. It's great to hear their views on birth and life and labour.

For both my births I had MWs with me the whole time - but for DD1 I was only in hospital for 3 hours and with DD2 I gave birth an hour after I got there. I liked the fact that the same MW was with me the whole time, although appreciate this is not always practical.

I don't think it's necessary for a good MW to have had to have gone through childbirth herself. For DD1 the utterly fabulous MW was not a mother. I cannot say enough about how great she was. Unfortunately she emigrated to New Zealand. My brilliant SIL also used to be a MW and isn't a mother. If there's one person you'd want with you when giving birth, it's my SIL Smile

Great programme. Looking forward to seeing the water birth next week.

NellieForbush · 10/01/2011 23:24

Oh and couldn't believe Janet said

"Am I allowed to rock"

Why had no one said "Do what you need to do Janet, move around if you want, shall we help you change position" etc

BionicEar · 10/01/2011 23:32

Love,love this programme!

Like the contrast it shows between the different women giving birth, and between the different staff in the hospital.

You do want to shout "Get a grip!", or "Why aren't they giving that poor woman more support?!" at some of them though - no names being mentioned hey?! Wink

Would like the programme to include a follow up so we know how the babies and their parents have progressed since the birth, particularly in the stories that tug at heart strings.

nevergoogledragonbutter · 10/01/2011 23:55

Great programme tonight.
Stop screaming you maniac! You're going to frighten your baby!

and awwww, at lad asking for a hug. he was great.

DH hates it though.

itsybitsy08 · 11/01/2011 00:02

Love the program - though agree it would be nice for a catch up after the birth.

Interesting about the screaming, i was told not to and to save my energy - if i screamed the energy was coming out instead of down! My mw was head of the team and quiet strict, so i only dared scream once! I liked her though, she was cruel to be kind type i think!

Those two mws on programme are lovley, firm but fair.
