Hi new claim sent 21st July they claim received 1st August.

Lots of evidence sent inc diagnosis, ehcp (1:1 at all times and son is 13).

Query re mobility ? He had brain cancer in 2023, surgery left him with hemiplegia and ataxia, he was wheelchair bound, then walking stick.
He "can" technically walk however cannot walk in a straight line, can't walk for 50metres safely (prone to falls and walking into things as his balance is way off he pretty much walks like ges had a few pints all the time - imagine this walking next to roads etc ) and the effort he has to use to walk is huge so he tires easily making it then really difficult for him to lift his left foot (he can't jump/run as the nerve/reflex doesn't work). He has a blue badge and access card inc +1 queuing and toilet.

First time applying as soooo much going on for first 18month since diagnosis.
He needs 1:1 supervision at all times due to mobility and safety, has extremely low processing speed (lowest 5%) and doesn't have the executive functioning skills or physical coordination to do basic tasks you would expect a 13yr old to be able to do.

Anyone got thought on mobility section?
He doesn't really fall neatly into any area.
We have a long wait based on info here.

Hiya sorry about your son iv done a form for my sister daughter has bone and lung cancer shes just waiting 20/6 is her scan date my sis daughter was only dignoised may she went in for a bad back its horrible aint it

PositivityRipples · 25/08/2025 03:34

@itmustbe Really sorry that happened to your son and your family..

Your son falls into the virtually unable to walk category for HRM.

The hemiplegia which is one side isnt it so that's physical and the ataxia which is neurological and impairment in coordination which is muscles but depending how this affects your son it's also the gait abnormalities speech eye movement ect for virtually unable to walk walking ability must be significantly restricted due to a physical disablement this includes severe discomfort when walking, limited walking distance, unavoidable episodes of refusal to walk due to pain or exhaustion.
He definitely qualifies for HRM under VUW but that all depends how you've worded and described it all on the form obviously you've wrote here " he can technically walk" Do not write that on your forms, I'm guessing you just wrote that here to try and explain.

Good luck keep us updated 🤞🏼

Thanks. Yes I didn't word like that just hard to explain.
Tbh any award will go towards extra physio, we ll see.

Hi it is terrible. My sons was only picked up on an eye test - straight to a&e and a golf ball tumour in his cerebellum.

5% chance of making it to 12 months post diagnosis and here we are 2 years later happy to have the start of long term effects because it means he's still here - ongoing MRzi's to check for disease, pituitary issues and now on daily growth and testosterone injections alongside mobility and processing issues.
He has quite an unusual after effect called posterior fossa syndrome or cerebellum mutism (it's referenced in the DM guidance) but I am guessing it will go to medical team for any decision.

Sending best wishes for your sister and her daughter it's a long difficult journey. X

Renewal
SD: 28/7/25
Awarded 15/8/25 (5 years)
Mrc/lrm (same as previous award)

I want to challenge this as I think my son meets the criteria for SMI. He is age 7 with ASD. I thought I had detailed in the renewal how he met the SMI criteria for hrc and hrm. However, we were awarded again fairly quickly (19 days).

Any advice on how to proceed? Thanks

@Itmustbe I understand that any help is great and a tiny weight off your shoulders to help your son... But if you're awarded any less than HRC HRM please come back to the thread and we / others will give you help andd guidance for a MR for the above rates.. I'm sure you already have enough evidence but just incase please don't just accept "any award".. You've already missed out on 18 months of financial support which is totally understandable that at the time you wasn't even thinking about dla you was thinking about your son and I'm sure it was all very upsetting and hard.. Don't miss out on what your son is entitled to from here on out...

Sending lots of positivity for your son 🙏💙

How do you get on with the pica? my son has this aswell the nappies after he has eaten sand at school are the worst thing :( I have to shower him after every bowel movement for about 3 days

If your son has pica its not always caused by sensory, my daughters is caused by iron deficancy and severe anemia, you should take him to a pediatric doctor for tests. My daughter doesnt try and eat non edible items she mainly licks them but its calmed down since shes started the iron.

This is really interesting to hear, my daughter has just seen a dietician she has iron deficiency and she licks things, I never thought the two would be connected. She’s not been told she has pica we are in early stages of being seen.

Anyone know if the wait times for MR is coming down yet? I see NC is being done by 10-12 weeks now so are the now progressing on MR’s and COC’s?

only 18 weeks into MR currently but wanna see how long I’m looking at waiting for 😂

I know this is mumsnet but I am a dad full time carer for my LO and house husband. Hope this is ok!

Suspiciousfox · 25/08/2025 19:51

we are currently at week 29 I’m afraid! It’s such a long and anxious wait! Hopefully they catch up like they have with NC’s, we waited 25 weeks for new claim too.

29 weeks here too, SC 03/02. I called a couple of weeks back and it hadn't made it to a DM yet. Been a year now since the original NC scan date!

Yes licking things like floors walls blinds etc if your daughter is licking things with no nutritional value and shes been diagnosed with iron deficiency, she has got pica. Pica is iron deficiency thats probably why they havent used the actual term.

He has already been tested by pediatrics no iron deficiency he does take multivitamins daily aswell due to his eating habits it definitely seems to ramp up in times of anixity seems to show it self more often at school these days he had a chew neckless to try to combat this but it doesn't always work at the moment he is eating alot of wood from wooden blocks so I'm trying to remove them but it easier said than done as removing the building blocks will cause him to inflict violence on himself or me so it's like being caught between a rock and a hard place sometimes
