Oh no @danni0509! That's bad luck though there seems to be loads of it around now. Fingers crossed he gets back to negative quickly.
@openupmyeagereyes the bit that made me nervous was when she was talking to me about positives and basically seemed to think autism made her brilliant at everything at school (including e.g. PE, maths, english). Now, DD does fine but she is not outstanding in any of these things according to her reports, and even if she was...!! I just tried to explain that this might imply that other kids were not so good at those things and would be a bit hurtful, which she got, but it does make me worry a bit what she might say! She also asked if her brother had a diagnosis so I realised she's been assuming because it runs in families that he is autistic too. I mean, it's a reasonable assumption, but it just makes me realise that there is lots of scope for misunderstandings and getting things wrong!
She also really wanted to do an "are you autistic?" quiz as part of it so had to explain that actually, only doctors can decide that...
Having said that, she's also told me that when the other kids are being noisy she sometimes puts her ear defenders on but sometimes just goes to find a teacher
- so I'm sure that goes down well with the other kids
.
So, as she says, they will realise she is a bit different already, and it seems sensible to start to have the conversation about why. And if things go a bit wrong then we'll cross that bridge when we come to it...
They don't have that long for show and tell so it will be quite short. Just a bit about neurodiversity (including ADHD, dyslexia, etc), a bit about autistic traits (including some things she finds hard), and a few famous autistic people.
