This is the continuation of the thread for parents and carers of autistic children in reception year at school, going into Year 1 in the autumn. All welcome (also parents with older or younger children who want to ask questions or share their wisdom!)

Welcome!

Hi everyone. I lost you all somewhere near the beginning of thread 2 and now I've just seen this thread on active conversations. Hope everyone is ok. dimples that sounds really painful and I totally get what you mean about the different parenting styles.

Ds is ok. We went to a special needs family fun day at the weekend. Ds ignored all the lovely sensory activities and spent most of the time running in circles round a field (sigh). On a positive note he actually queued for a go at powerchair football and I managed to get a photo of him smiling which is a rare thing.

openupmyeagereyes · 11/07/2019 20:39

dimples that must have been so scary for your mum. I presume ds was ok?

What a great report Star I’m sure he will make progress in writing and toileting in the coming year.

I downloaded the national curriculum. The things they need to learn next year are scaring me somewhat...

openupmyeagereyes · 11/07/2019 20:47

ellie hooray for smiley photos.

danni0509 · 11/07/2019 21:10

Open I looked up the national curriculum on twinkl a while ago and ended up switching it off, ridiculous! Don't look at yr 2 what ever you do Confused

This is how the gap widens with SN children, I can definitely can see why.

Bless them. X

danni0509 · 11/07/2019 21:36

Dimples bless you, how long until you are fully fit? Well done to ds for his amazing progress this year.

Hi Ellie & to everyone else.

dimples76 · 11/07/2019 22:05

Yes, DS was fine - I had banned him from going on the school field ages ago because he never comes back. My Mum thought that I was being too strict ...

Don't think that I had better read the info on the national curriculum.

Danni it's 4 more weeks of non-weight bearing and leg elevation and then I'll be in a boot but I'm not sure how long for. When DS gets in from school he always asks if my leg is better now

Ellie my boy would be like that too. I'm glad that he had fun

LightTripper · 12/07/2019 11:56

Hi all! Happy to hear about smiley photos and welcome back ellie!

We had DD's end of term concert yesterday and she did a line Shock. Afterwards she seemed to go into shock a bit and yawned a lot, which we think is probably a stress response as she used to do it a lot in swimming lessons before she started refusing them... but anyway, she was super pleased with herself afterwards and the whole class got ice creams, so I think she could count that a pretty good day!

I'm going to try to attach the Lego Therapy materials below open - let me know if they don't make sense. There are two different documents and some laminates, so I'll upload them in 3 batches but pages may end up in the wrong order, sorry. These are designed around children doing it together but I think you could do it with 2 adults and a child, or even 1 adult and a child if one of you takes on the role of architect and supplier and the other is builder?

If you want me to post the originals @openupmyeagereyes PM me your address and I'm happy to send them over! Or I can scan them in properly at work if these are hard to read.

Thanks Light, I’ll have a look and let you know if I have any issues. You’re so kind to share it.

I’m feeling a bit emotional today, not helped by being up since 3:30 Hmm. So much activity due to the end of the school year with reports and EHCP review etc. Ds had a tricky afternoon yesterday for a couple of reasons and then today the teacher has given me a copy of an updated risk assessment that they’ve completed as handover to the yr1 teacher. One of the items is a bit open to interpretation and I’m waiting for her to clarify by email. It’s either possible that he’s consistently and persistently disruptive or that the risk of disruption is consistent and persistent. Obviously I’m hoping for the latter but fearing the worst. Surely we would know if he was disruptive all the time?

dimples76 · 12/07/2019 13:38

Light thanks for sharing those lego materials.

Open it does seem more likely that it is the latter. Fingers crossed!

We are in celebratory mode here - the SEND Tribunal have granted my sister's appeal (which I wrote) and ordered the LA to do an EHC assessment for my nephew. We are still waiting to hear the outcome of my other nephew's appeal. I have submitted 3 appeals over the last couple of years so I'm hoping for 3 out of 3 wins. Although I'm delighted with the outcome I am livid that parents of SEN children have to go through this and upset for the children whose parents are unable to advocate for them. Grrrr

openupmyeagereyes · 12/07/2019 13:54

dimples that’s brilliant. Hopefully you’ll be 3 for 3.

Agree that it’s awful for the parents and the children.

LightTripper · 12/07/2019 16:17

Congratulations dimples! But you're right, it's a scandal that this seems to just be a standard part of the process these days.

@LightTripper Thanks for the Lego information. It looks great!

@dimples76 Brilliant news on the appeal... Well done!

It's been a busy week here...DD has been accepted into the waiting list for ASD assessment (6 months tops is the estimate, so pretty good!), A local school with small classes (20) are open to Flexi-Schooling and are happy to let DD do numerous half days before she potentially starts next September (could start this year but really needs extra time) and I've been advised to start the ECHP process myself so it is hopefully complete before she has to start school (I.e. 5yrs old).

I have a feeling it's going to be a very busy year!

Has anyone else done the ECHP themselves? I know the school are usually the main instigators however because DD doesn't go to a mainstream pre school is not really an option...

dimples76 · 13/07/2019 07:09

Furrycat we applied for my nephews as school was dragging its feet and seemed to accept all out LA's unlawful local policy at face value. I can recommend the resources including the template letter on IPSEA. I would recommend doing it sooner rather than later - my son's took 8 months from application to plan and we applied in January for my nephews but (due to having to appeal) we are only just starting the assessment.

My son was at a private nursery but the LA's Ed Psych guided them how to apply. I think that we were perhaps particularly lucky with the EP as she was determined to secure support for DS - that said the LA still declined to assess

LightTripper · 13/07/2019 07:22

That school sounds brilliant Furry!

openupmyeagereyes · 13/07/2019 08:09

We completed the EHC assessment request ourselves. Ostensibly it was an application from his nursery but we completed all sections of the form except cognition and learning which they did with guidance from Core Assets which were the support group we used. Ds’ nursery were small, had zero experience and were completely overwhelmed by the idea of what to do. I wanted to make sure it gave us the best chance so we did it ourselves.

I agree, the school sounds lovely.

dimples76 · 13/07/2019 08:44

Yes, the school sounds great

openupmyeagereyes · 13/07/2019 12:29

My Talkability book arrived today. I’m hoping it will be helpful in lieu of SALT sessions.

Jeb86 · 13/07/2019 18:18

I’ve “stolen” the talkability book from work as it looks like it might be useful for DS, I’ve not had chance to look through it yet though. The other Hanan books are brilliant though.

openupmyeagereyes · 15/07/2019 18:13

How is everyone doing?

Ds does not seem to be happy about the transition activities and talk of moving to a new class. Thankfully we have the summer break in between to get him used to the idea, frankly I can’t wait for it to start. They’ve not yet confirmed who his TA’s will be next year. The head did tell us previously that they would most likely be the same but they have some teachers leaving and moving about so we are waiting to hear.

EHCP review on Wednesday, I’m not looking forward to that either!

openupmyeagereyes · 15/07/2019 19:02

OMG behaviour. What do you guys do when dc are being difficult and refusing to do as asked? I don’t know what’s happened but I feel we have zero strategies that work when he just outright refuses to comply.
