Thanks to Thumbwitch for inspiring the title of this new thread. Smile

I will do my very best to minimise my worrying about the future as none of us know what it holds. For now, it's all about celebrating Beatrice's life today, every day.

As always, please feel free to follow us on our journey, and thank you in advance for the wonderful advice I am bound to receive from fellow parents, of SN children or otherwise.

Here's to a positive, uneventful thread!

Cup you have to pace and look after yourself. Enjoy the comfy bed and nice shower. Go Bea!

youarenotbeingserious · 03/04/2012 18:55

So sorry I missed your update about Bea being unwell and sorry to her she's in hospital again. Sad

Glad to hear she's perkier. Staying at your friends sounds like a great compromise - Bea needs you strong and well to look after her and you want to be near Bea.

Nurse's attitude stinks as well. Angry

argghh · 03/04/2012 18:59

Hi just popping in to see how Bea is doing, and to send my love and prayers, I am glad she is improving.

Take care of yourself too cup

cupofteaplease · 03/04/2012 20:26

Well don't let it be said that I don't take advice and guidance from you lovely ladies! On your orders Wink I went and slept at my friend's house and had a lovely full night's sleep followed by a hot shower. I feel much, much better today.

Beatrice was feeling much, much better too. So much so that the Dr said she could go home. But Beatrice doesn't like to be told what to do by doctors, so she spiked a temperature, just to spite them. Consequently, we are staying another night for observation, but she's absolutely dandy now.

A registrar did come in earlier though to apologise and explain that Beatrice was given a little overdose of antibiotics yesterday. Apparently the nurse today noticed on her drugs sheet that she was given an extra dose yesterday by mistake. The registrar said it would be reported to a certain body, and dh and I would be called to a hearing. I obviously told him this was NOT necessary!! I think yesterday's nurse was having a bad day what with the drug and her refusal to let me go for a walk- she's normally a lovely lady. Anyway, the side effect of the 'overdose' is diarrhea, so add that to the diarrhea she already had, I'm sure you can imagine the state of her poorly bottom Angry < angry bottom, not angry Cup!>

Poor dear little bottom; a smidgeon of virtual Sudocrem is being gently patted on all the way from the Cotswolds!

Carrotcakeisace · 03/04/2012 21:21

Poor Bea, a sore bum is rubbish but yay to her feeling better and you getting a full nights sleep and a lovely shower (why are they always rubbish in children's wards?)

Hope you both get home tomorrow x

BB3 · 03/04/2012 21:54

I am very glad you did as you were told and also glad Beatrice is feeling well enough to give the drs a run around Grin. Hope you can both get home tomorrow and enjoy Easter with the teaset x

Poor bea's bottom though. I hope it clears up soon x

lexluther · 03/04/2012 22:04

So glad she's feeling better and that you had a chance for a good rest :)

mycatsaysach · 03/04/2012 22:08

peggyblackett · 03/04/2012 22:30

So glad to hear that Bea is feeling better (and that you got some kip too). I hope you both get to go home very soon. x

FelicityKendalmintcake · 03/04/2012 22:47

Look forward to hearing news of Bonny Bea back at home.

Eggsits · 03/04/2012 23:17

More virtual sudacreme from here for Bea's sore bits.

So glad to hear you say you would not be taking the overdose incident further. Whilst it sounds dreadful, people do make mistakes and the thought of being dragged through a heaing.

Virtual hugs all round.

bigbluebus · 04/04/2012 09:00

Hi cup. Glad to hear things are better and that you almost got home!!! Better luck today.
Poor Bea and her sore bottom though. My DD had this problem last year when she was on I/v antibiotics for 2 weeks. We saw the tissue viability nurse as she was so sore. Nurse told us that you should always use Cavilon sticks to put a protective film on the skin if it is likely that antibiotics will cause problems. In an ideal world, hospitals would use them on anyone who is in nappies/incontinent if they are lkely to suffer the ill-effects of antibiotics. Prevention is always better than cure, but they are still good after the soreness has started as they protect the rash from any liquids touching the skin. Ask on the ward if you can have some to use.

SallyBear · 04/04/2012 09:21

For sore bottoms caused by antibiotics - We used to use Metanium and very soft Vaseline. The Metanium went on first (thin layer) and then the barrier soft white paraffin. My DD was in SCBU for 5 long months so I can appreciate how you are feeling and coping. ((hugs))

MessNessPess · 04/04/2012 11:31

Second metanium for sore antibiotic bum.

cupofteaplease · 04/04/2012 12:43

Thank you! Cavilon spray and metanium paste requested and delivered by pharmacy Smile

Still high temp this morning and racing heartrate, so she's had blood tests, a chest Xray, and I collected a stool sample and assisted in collecting a urine sample with a catheter. I'm such a wuss, I came over all light headed Blush Providing all results come back clear, they'll assume it's a virus.

hazeyjane · 04/04/2012 12:43

When ds was in scbu, the nurses mixed metanium with sudocrem to help it spread a bit more easily. They also used a medical grade honey, which sounds mad, but really worked well!

fhdl34 · 04/04/2012 13:44

Poor Bea and her sore bot bot :(

SallyBear · 04/04/2012 14:40

I've heard that about honey Hazey. In fact there is a British Plastic Surgeon who dies voluntary work in Africa twice a year and he uses cane sugar to help with the healing as apparently it (and honey) has antibiotic qualities!
Cup you can buy Metanium anywhere where there is a baby toiletry section - it's good stuff!
On a personal note Sudacrem is brilliant for spots.....!
Cup, have you learned how to tube change yet? It's horrid to start with, but you develop a knack with practice. Smile

cupofteaplease · 04/04/2012 16:00

Sally Bea has an NJ tube, its position needs to be verified with an Xray, so we can't pass it at home. All the nurses are having a go at passing it as most of them have never passed an NJ before- Good old Bea, assisting in their professional development!

OP posts:
jubilee10 · 04/04/2012 16:35

Manuka honey - very expensive, but good.

SallyBear · 04/04/2012 16:41

Cup, we had an ng tube and a gastrostomy. I don't think that NJ tubes were done by Oxford in 2000 as I am certain that Elizabeth would have had one if that was the case! She had everything else!! I remember when we were in MK General when she was about 2 with gastroenteritis that I had to train the nurses on how to suction her tracheostomy and to show them how to change a trachy as she was the first child in the community, with a trachy.

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 04/04/2012 22:25

Poor Bea and her sore little botbot :(

That's terrible about the 'over dose' - you'd think the system would be better than that wouldn't you. Still, I think you are right not to take it any further if you have that option - it's just more stress you don't need and if the nurse is usually nice & on the ball then it would be a bit harsh wouldn't it... I'm sure she's beating herself up about it.

I hope Bea is well enough to go home tomorrow
x

CavemanDave · 04/04/2012 22:26

Another metanium fan here cup, although I restrict it so that it only goes on an absolutely spanking clean bot, either after a bath or (at a push) cotton wool/water clean and never after just baby wipes. I found after baby wipes it wouldn't stick properly and actually made things worse. Good to hear she is on the mend.
