I'd be dubious about anything which purports to evaluate with no personal context and little interpretation of results while recommending a specific programme.

What on earth are you guys on about? It's not a miracle cure, or any other kind of a cure.

It's a report. Which, you may or may not find useful.

But guys, feel free to pay an EP £600 to tell you stuff you could find out for £20. It's your money.

I really honestly wonder why I bother posting useful stuff on this board. So many people want to shout me down. :(

In fact I'm really annoyed by your comments.

I'm constantly posting on here things that I have personally done which have worked for either DS or DD. I only ever recommend stuff I have done that has actually worked.

This report is very good and worth it's money. I've used it on DD and can personally recommend it.

If somebody had told me about this a year ago it would have helped me enormously.

Accusing me of a scam is totally out of order.

I'm not making any points about useful ness of these tests, as I don't know...

(altho interestingly enough I have to say the report done by our EP was actually the least useful of the lot we had as part of diagnosis, )

Thanks indigo it's always useful to find out about resources others have found helpful. I think maybe your post was misunderstood. People will have differing opinions about things you have to pay for as there can be scams around, think it was an overreaction, responses could have been worded more diplomatically.

I have recommended loads of therapies/programmes/products to other posters that I or my family have found helpful. As others have helped me.

Doesnt mean I have any financial interest in sharing the information though!!!! ffs!

I'd be hesitant about using any test that has not been through a formal standardisation process (i.e. been proved to show what it purports to show, that has validity and reliability) and that has no clinical involvement in the interpretation, i.e. where the assessor does not comment on test behaviour. Any professional would be compelled to dismiss the report based on lack of all the above data and no professional administration, I think.

indigo - how long does the whole test take and what format/style of questionning is used? how do the types of questions asked compare with those used in full ep assessments?

its simply for personal use, a starter for ten, a toe in the water, an affordable option for people who havent got £100s to spare

and apart from that - a quick search would tell you that Indigo is not a get-rich-quick scam merchant, but instead gives a lot of time to help support other posters and suggest things which she has herself tried and found helpful.

trade Test Standardization.

I don't want the report to show to any professionals. I want it for me. I'll also share it with my SENCO, because she's very good.

plumtart - the test takes over 30 mins, but it is in 7 sections and you can take breaks inbetween. But I think your child would have to be able to concentrate for 5 - 10 minutes to be able to use it.

Your DC doesn't need to be able to read to do it.

I don't know enough about EP tests to answer, but some of the tests seemed identical to what an EP uses.

And like I said, the scores I got on this test were almost identical to scores I've had on a prev EP report.

The reason it was useful for me is that DD scored in the 2nd percentile of one of the sections - and above 25th percentile for everything else.

(This is a section that the EP did not test)

Which tells me that I'm not focussing my time with her very well. I should be spending all my time on her area of severe weakness - and I wasn't. (And so should school)

I took it that Indigo meant it might be useful as a starter for 10 to help the eons of parents left waiting YEARS by the system for professional input, and unable to afford private. In that situation ANY info can be better than no info if you want to try and start helping your child yourself at home, or even to know what questions to ask the school when vague worries begin to surface.

Other Mums & forums like this have been the only source of real help my son has had until very recently and I'd hate it if people read the comments above and were put off sharing hints and tips in future.

Thanks Indigo, as we are STILL waiting for the school to pull their finger out and call in the EP this might be a good short term measure in the mean time :)

It is fine if the "user" recognises its limitations but I do feel there is a real danger of some not understanding what the report is saying (I found conversations with the EP conducting the assessment really helpful in clarifying the stats) and believing it is a diagnosis tool for more general use . For our money we got a way more detailed analysis and explanation whcih proves the value of personal recommendation for an EP if nothing else.

LizS - you still don't seem to understand.

This report is not useful for getting a label. Nor is it going to make recommendations for what compensating strategies school should use.

Nor is it going to cost you a fortune.

What it is going to do is highlight any areas of real weakness so that you can work on them.

For example you may think your child has a memory problem. You take this test, and find out that your child's long term, working and visual memory are all fine, but their auditory memory is absolute rubbish.

So then you google auditory memory, and get loads of ideas for exercises that can be done every day to improve auditory memory. (Or you ask on this board :) )

And you can stop all the other memory games you have been doing, which haven't been targeting auditory memory.

So this report provides very useful numbers for anyone whose child is having unexplained difficulties with learning.

No I do. I just think it is not so easy to interpret without the context an EP/OT can put the data into. Bear in mind you , I and many other interested parents on here have already had enough personalised infoirmation to put results into context or know roughly what areas and skills need to be wortked on. Someone newish to the SEN world , won't neceesarily have this. To say it is an EP type report is something of an oversimplification. Yes it tests the same areas but not to the extent as in a full report and it is then up to the parent/carer to make the further enquires which may be fine but also not as accesible to some or so easy to do without rl support.

Just using your example, Indigobell, if the test doesn't have reliability, how can you be sure it's eliciting a real difficulty? If it supports what you suspect anyway, that doesn't necessarily make it right. Also, problems such as auditory memory are remarkably resistant to improvement through direct training. Research bodies have found it very hard to prove any direct impact on skills, let alone any generalisation effect.
If you can see that your child has specific diffculties and can do things to make them more successful then that is a great thing and tips should certainly be shared. But by doing daily exercises with no reliable research evidence can become a bit much for a child.
I'm not trying to have a go. I would much prefer that everyone who's worried about their child had good, quick access to someone who could help them. Back I go to dreamland.

£20 is a total waste of money for what will be a standardised report. No address or phone number on the website screams that is should not be touched with a barge pole. So she has posted before with other things, does this mean we should take her every word as gospel? I looked at the site and it seems full of guff to me. It could send those who use it in completely the wrong direction which in my mind is much worse, it wt would never give enough in depth detail on which a parent could base next steps decisions on.

EP's cost so much because they see and speak to and assess the child fully, spend time producing a report and reccomendations and discuss these with the parent/s. They don't simple spew out random data for £20.

Would you want a nurse opertating on your heart or a heart surgeon? So I stand by what I said originally, lack of validity and contact details on the site for a start screams scam eg: some way someone has come up with for fleecing people of their cash by providing a poor service.
