What's keeping you awake?

Posting here for traffic.

I can't sleep, again. I'm curious to know what keeps you awake at night? Is there anything specific or can you simply just not sleep? I'm just scrolling MN for no obvious reason and thought I'd ask the question.

My lovely, nerdy, never goes out after dark son had an accident today.

He fell 15ft from the window of an abandoned mill him and his friend were exploring.

He is fine - lots and lots of cuts and bruises, sprained ankle, eye almost closed shut. But he's home and alive.

I have seen the video of the fall, and it's keeping me awake. The 'what ifs' and the anger and the sheer hopelessness that no matter how good your kid is, this could still happen.

Alarms set to check on him hourly. My biggest child feels like my smallest tonight.

annierodgers1 · 30/01/2023 00:52

My DH keeps me up at night 🤣🫣

EveryDayIsA · 30/01/2023 00:53

Toddler, she banged her head today and I also think she has a cold coming so very unsettled. Unlike most children she won't be settled woth cuddles and just pushes me away crying

WhatWouldHopperDo · 30/01/2023 00:55

@funkybum That’s so scary but glad he is ok.

I have recently overcome a really bad bout of insomnia but tonight I ate takeaway too late and it’s sitting uncomfortably so I’ve got back up and waiting for my stomach to settle.

Ilovetocrochet · 30/01/2023 00:56

I have really bad sleep patterns, sometimes awake until 4 am then not waking up until mid day unless I set an alarm. I often only get four hours sleep!

Other times, like today, I fell asleep at 3 am, alarm went off at 11 am, fell back to sleep until 12.30 when I got up. Pottered in the house all day, then fell asleep while lying on the bed at around 8.30 and woke up as 11.30 pm absolutely starving! So made a sandwich and am now playing on my iPad while waiting to go back to sleep. My alarm is set for 8.30am as my cleaner is due in the morning!

Luckily I live alone and no longer work so I can suit myself, I try to not worry about my lack of regular sleep as I don’t let it affect my busy social life. I just cope with feeling tired sometimes and catch up later.

But in some ways I wish I was able to sleep better, when I was working and up at 6am, I slept quite well unless I was worried about something.

BreviloquentBastard · 30/01/2023 01:24

I'm naturally nocturnal and if left to my own devices slip into a pattern of 3am to bed, wake up about 11am. Unfortunately I have to get up at 6 for work but no matter how long I do it I can't convince my brain into the pattern. So, I can't sleep. Then I can't wake up. Then I'm tired all day. Rinse and repeat forever!

mondaytosunday · 30/01/2023 01:47

I haven't gone to bed yet! My daughter has her post A level application due Tuesday, plus Art essay and unit 1 artwork, d she had been up uncharacteristically late working in that. She's just gone to bed and I'm about to!

VictoriaBun · 30/01/2023 01:51

A snoring dh , also need to get up earlier for an appointment so always sleep worse because of that . A million of stupid things running through my head.
Can't switch off.

awakeagainn · 30/01/2023 01:56

DS just won't sleep 🥲 he keeps waking up crying. Doesn't Seem to be poorly so maybe it's just teething.
I'm so tired and have to be up at 6. Haven't slept at all yet

Hope you can all manage to get some rest x

PleaseCleanTheWholeToilet · 30/01/2023 01:57

Got into a awful routine of not going to sleep till 4/5/6 in the morning

I have to break this cycle!!

DaisyCornflowerBlue · 30/01/2023 02:06

I'm at work. I hate night shifts. I don't sleep during the day despite all the things I do (earplugs, blackout curtains, avoiding stimulants, drinking camomile tea) I turn into a monster.

pleaseletmesleeptonight · 30/01/2023 02:18

I'm sick, suspect covid again.

My DH is sorting.

My DS was still rustling around until 1am

I don't think I've slept yet, just done that eyes shut thing and have a whizzy brain that's overthinking about money, house stuff.. worrying basically.

So I decided to just sit up and scroll.

Readytoplay · 30/01/2023 02:19

My medication. I am pretty much now nocturnal 🧛‍♀️🤣

hadenoughforever · 30/01/2023 02:23

Ruminating over failures

MavisFlump · 30/01/2023 02:23

I often awake after a few hours sleep. Being retired it doesn’t bother me too much. I’ll probably have another couple of hours sleep about 4-ish.
Some nights I do sleep right through.
I think having heart failure I wake up because I’m breathless.

Mystic94 · 30/01/2023 02:25

Woke up at 2 feeling extremely nauseous and stomach pain. My kids have been unwell over the weekend with the dreaded sickness bug, so I'm just waiting for it to start.

I'm also phobic of sick 😩

PopsicleHustler · 30/01/2023 02:28

Feeding my newborn, and i also feeling incredibly thirsty. He is still feeding though. So will have to wait before can pop into the kitchen to get myself a glass of water!
I wake up twice in the night to feed him and it takes me ages to go back to sleep again 😒

Snugglemonkey · 30/01/2023 02:36

DD. She is 8 weeks old and feeding 2 hourly through the night. I don't mind. I had IVF to have her and spend quite a lot of the night feeds just watching her and feeling lucky.

Also the 3 pack of salted caramel whips I felt I needed at the midnight wake that just made me feel sick 😔

Danioo · 30/01/2023 02:41

I am stuck in a stupid pattern of waking between 2 - 3/4am every night.

Enjoy those baby feeds, special times.

Margo34 · 30/01/2023 02:50

Pregnancy insomnia. Very active bump. Achy hips/sides. 'The Fear' that I've got nothing prepared for baby yet and making mental lists of all the things to get. I'm over 29w now.

Snoring DH (like freight train).

Work woes. Teacher woes. Wondering how 'that child' will present at school tomorrow, feeling sad for them already. Wondering if I'll get my planning time/PPA tomorrow, I've only had 80mins worth since this side of Christmas! Worrying how I'll get everything done.

Worrying about my parents' recent ill-health.

Panicmode1 · 30/01/2023 02:54

Chronic insomnia as usual. I'm usually awake sometime between 2-5am, doze for a bit before DH's alarm goes off at 6. V dull.

bakewellbride · 30/01/2023 02:54

My baby. I haven't slept properly in 13 months and I'm typing this with tears streaming down my face. It truly is a torture method.

FlappyFish · 30/01/2023 02:56

Not wanting to wake up and do it all again tomorrow. Each night I hope I fall asleep and wake the next day to find the dark stupor of depression lifted. Each night I stay awake not wanting yet another interminable day to commence.

Margo34 · 30/01/2023 02:56

I never used to mind with mine either, not IVF but rainbow baby. Felt like our special time, just the 2 of us and I'd gaze in besotted awe. Now we just have that time at bedtime when the toddler drifts off, snuggled into me. I still love it, my favourite time of day. Enjoy those moments 🥰

Hang in there, mumma. It won't last forever and it WILL get better.
