I’m prepared to be told I’m a terrible mother but please hear me out.

My 5 month old has had one half hour sleep between 1045 this morning and now.

He is screaming with exhaustion, and I’ve been sobbing as well.

I really need advice but it does need to be actual advice I can use. So:

The sling is a no go.

He will sleep in the pram but I don’t want to be overly reliant on this.

He will feed to sleep sometimes. But the problem is if he doesn’t I then have to wait until he’s hungry enough to accept another bottle.

Dummies don’t work as he spits them out or knocks them out of his mouth.

So - I’ve no idea but I am desperate.

Ave you tried swaddling him him op get the room dark and then just really gently rocking him whilst you hum this also used to work to calm mine down and help them to sleep

Nohomemadecandles · 20/05/2021 18:50

This once, for your sake, to get YOU some space, pram. Once he is asleep and you've had a break, you can think about tomorrow then. But you're exhausted and you have been since 1pm that we know of.

Please take the kindest route for you now and look at long term tomorrow. Relying on jiggling a oral tonight won't change anything long term. You need a break. Flowers

Cyw2018 · 20/05/2021 18:50

Also if you're worried about needing to constantly rock him buy a pram rocker. My neighbours had one for their DS and it saved their sanity.

PhannyPharts · 20/05/2021 18:50

OP. This is your third post in different sections asking the same thing. People are trying to help you.

I am worried about you. Do you have someone in real life to support you?

N4ish · 20/05/2021 18:50

Overstimulation and over tiredness. Sitting in a completely dark room holding the baby and very gently rocking and patting used to work for my DD when she got like this.

NavigatingAdolescence · 20/05/2021 18:51

I really want something for dinner but only have an egg, some mayo, and 2 pieces of bread. Anyone got any suggestions? I don’t want anything resembling a sandwich though, even though a sandwich is the obvious option. I want you all to tell me how I can make a fabulous

NavigatingAdolescence · 20/05/2021 18:51

Meal that isn’t a sandwich.

stillreallytired · 20/05/2021 18:51

Oh my god what on earth

Right OK. The pram works when it is being moved. I can’t walk round the living room with it because

A) there is a lot of furniture in there and I can’t walk in a straight line. I can’t twist and turn and get him to sleep

B) we live quite rurally. The pram is covered in mud (wheels) and it would be both unhygienic and pretty messy

C) it wouldn’t get him to sleep. It’s the fresh air I think.

So please, please, PLEASE if all you have to say is pram don’t post.

Thank you.

I get mine to sleep sometimes cuddling him on my lap and kind of jiggling the leg that he's resting on. Can get longer naps because if he looks like he's going to wake up I start jiggling my leg up and down again. If I was really desperate and it was getting too much I'd try the car or bus.

stillreallytired · 20/05/2021 18:51

hahahahaha you’re so funny

Sorry passion that obviously wasn’t aimed at you

You just ROCK the pram. You don’t push it around the room.

Generations have done it before you. You refuse to try. Whatever. It’s your sanity. 🤷🏻‍♀️

SuperMonkeys · 20/05/2021 18:53

Then put a coat on and go out. 🤷

Do you have a car?

Why doesn't the sling work?

Walking backwards and forwards jiggling?

OodieWoodie · 20/05/2021 18:53

You say the pram works, but don't want to do it. So people will keep telling you to do what works.

I think short of recommending you provide your child with some form of illicit substance to render them unconscious, you're not going to get the magical solution you want here OP.

Can I make a serious recommendation? Get yourself to the GP. For yourself. I drove myself to despair with DS1s sleep when I didn't need to because of PND and anxiety.

DarcyLewis · 20/05/2021 18:53

Do you have anywhere in your house that you can put the pram up and rock or bounce it? You don't always need to go out.

This is a more long term solution that a quick fix but I would:

  • get him in to a routine. Wake him up at the same time every day eg 7am and get him back down for his first nap within 90 minutes of awake time.
If you need to take him for a walk or rock the pram in the house to do this, then do it. Aim for around an hour, again maybe walking or rocking to achieve this. Introduce lots of sleep cues - white noise or relaxing music, dummy, muslin or comforter and use these to cue every nap. Next nap around lunch time after no more then 2 hours awake, aim for an hour + Another shorter nap around 4/4.30pm, maybe 30-45 minutes. Around 15 minutes before each nap start winding down, baby massage, turn lights low, gentle music, snuggle with dummy/comforters.
  • once your baby has a good nap routine and isn't overtired, start working on getting them to sleep without the pram/movement.
Now instead of doing your wind down routine and into the pram, you can do the wind down at nap time and into the cot. Shush and pat your baby in the cot, pick up only if he gets upset and then put him down again. Have all those sleep cues - music/white noise, comforters etc.
  • once you can get your baby to sleep with shushing and patting in the cot, you can gradually reduce the amount of helping you are doing until they can get themselves to sleep.
Subordinateclause · 20/05/2021 18:53

Bouncy chair in front of the washing machine going round?

Carry him whilst hoovering

A drive in the car?

Bouncing on an exercise ball?

I have a 4m old and these work for me, maybe they will for you.

Subordinateclause · 20/05/2021 18:54

I meant you sitting on the exercise ball while holding him obviously.

Shower caps over the wheels. This is completely serious!!
myhobbyisouting · 20/05/2021 18:54

Where do you live that it's been unsafe to go out all day? It's throwing it down here at the moment but considering the situation just go

Subordinateclause · 20/05/2021 18:54

Sorry pressed post too soon. He's too old to swaddle as suggested above.

Mydarlingmyhamburger · 20/05/2021 18:54

Op we haven’t got a magic wand. Why ask for suggestions and shoot down every one? What have you actually tried?

RavingAnnie · 20/05/2021 18:55

Why can't you use the prism in bad weather? Just stick on a mac with a hood that's what I used to do. Waterproof trousers and wellies if you need them. Prams have rain covers. Simple.

Stop making your life harder than it needs to be.

FourTeaFallOut · 20/05/2021 18:55

Ok, try swaddling, shushing and rocking at the same time. When my kids would get beyond it like this I'd wear noise cancelling headphones while doing the above - you already know you are doing what you can to help and it doesn't help to have your last nerve rattled by the full thrust of the crying volume. And then just keep going.

anothermamaa · 20/05/2021 18:55

What @OodieWoodie said..

Winifredgoose · 20/05/2021 18:55

You have to use the pram. 2 out of 3 of my children would only sleep in the buggy in the day. It is a pain, but nothing else worked.
