Has anyone tried sleeping training ?? Help

How did you do it ?

I really need to do something as I'm physically and emotionally drained!
DD is 14months and still isn't sleeping through the night an regularly wakes up. I'm so sleep deprived. Many have mentioned to try the Ferber method where you come in after long intervals. I just need to do something and this is literally my last and final option I don't know wat else to do.

Has anyone tried this ?? Has it worked ? Was it the worse thing ever ? Please any advice will help.

Yes I hope this will help her sleep just that little bit better and once she's used to this routine then hopefully il try the sleep training but as you've mentioned il do it gradually.

It is the absolute worst thing being sleep deprived an then it affects how you are during the day. Then I just feel like the worst mum because I'm not myself an not as patient as usually am. So really hope this works xxx

@Daisyflower12345 fi gers crossed for you, keep it gradual and remember it takes a few days for any effect. I do think you will see improvements by shifting the nap to the middle of the day and a slightly earlier bedtime, along with lots of other recommendations given.
My daughter was dreadful, but she has hyoermobility and was told it could be her joints aching in the night. Something eventually clicked and on the whole she sleeps 7:30pm-7am most nights, will occasionally wake and need resettling but that's maybe once a week if that. I almost don't want to tell you what age she was when this happened.... She was 3..... I was a shell of a human

ScarMatty · 05/10/2020 12:16

It's not a case of you need to be strong enough to see it through! If she's so upset she vomits then it's not going to work

This. Sleep training does not work with every child so if it feels 'wrong' and is making both of you stress, stop.

Indecisivelurcher · 05/10/2020 13:52

I won't tell you that my daughter was up every night from 1:30am-3 or 4... From age 4 until this summer... She's about to turn 6... I am full on just after the sympathy!!! This is how I know quite a lot of stuff about sleep.

Daisyflower12345 · 05/10/2020 15:08

@Indecisivelurcher Awwwww bless you. I can imagine that must've of been so difficult you poor thing! Well I'm so glad that she's better now and it's easier for you.

Well my DD has not had a nap at all today ! I'm just so confused. She usually sleeps at 11-12ish but today nothing. I have tried so many times to put her down for a nap but she refuses to! But will still try an put her to bed for 7 so wish me luck fingers crossed it goes well. Just don't know why she won't sleep.

Indecisivelurcher · 05/10/2020 15:18

Ah no! What can happen is the less sleep they have, the less they have! There is a saying that sleep begets sleep. I think you need to try for a nap still. Do you have a cat, can you go for a drive? Or personally in this situation I would do bedtime earlier than 7. I've put my ds to bed at 5 a few times!

Indecisivelurcher · 05/10/2020 15:18

A car!!!! A cat is no use to you...

Daisyflower12345 · 05/10/2020 15:40

@Indecisivelurcher hahah I was going to reply yes I do have a cat😂😂😂

So u reckon I should still try an give her a nap now ?

OP posts:
Indecisivelurcher · 05/10/2020 15:56

Heck, possibly not now, its 4pm... it's a really tough call. Your options are power nap, or really early bedtime. I would probably go for a really early bedtime... and accept that it's all pear shaped today!! If you do an early tea at 4 to keep her going with a bit of sugar, then put her to bed at 6, worst case is she thinks it's a nap and wake ups at 8 so what's to lose? If that happens you can bring her downstairs for a couple of hours and put her back to bed at 10, when you go to bed yourself.

Tomorrow if it doesn't look like she's going to go down at lunch time, I would use the buggy or car and make that nap happen.

Cats are useful but I think driving them around is frowned upon... Or is that just my cat?

Please don't think that your little one magically doesn't need as much sleep as other children... When they run up a sleep debt, their bodies fight sleep. They might even seem wired or hyper. You need to do whatever you can to help them catch up that sleep debt. If you do an Internet search for catching up a sleep debt baby, a few hits should come up. My favourite sleep website used to be thebabysleepsite.com, but this is going back a few years now. They're consultants but they have lots of free info on there.

Daisyflower12345 · 05/10/2020 16:13

@Indecisivelurcher I have literally tried all day to put her to sleep but she just won't! I have to admit today has been one of the worst days for me ever. I am emotionally and physically drained I just have no energy 😩

Yeh I'm going to give her dinner now and then will try an put her in bed for 6. Also that's a very good idea I'm so glad u mentioned about her waking up around 8ish an just bringing her down. If u didn't mention that I would've been upstairs trying an trying to put her back to sleep lol I think sometimes I jus need to go with the flow. I stress too much an over work myself.

Let's hope tomorrow she goes back to the normal routine of midday nap and then we can try the new bedtime at 7pm hopefully.

Hi

How are you getting on?

Im just reading the advice as my nearly 1 year old who used to go to sleep in his cot absolutely fine and sleep right through most nights(sometimes i'd have to give him a little rock in the night) has started hysterically crying every time i put him near his cot. It seems to have been ever since ive returned to work which was 5 weeks ago now.

He sleeps lovely as soon as you put him in the bed with you which i never wanted to start and because he was so good from the start i thought would never happen, but it has, and now every night since then he wont go in his cot. We've tried "controlled crying" one night but it lasted an hour of crying and me going in to pat him and reassure him but that didnt help and he was in such a state, and dad couldnt stand it anymore so once again he went in the bed with him.

Do you think we just need to keep trying the controlled crying or gradual technique or something? i realise we need to be consistent whatever we do as well.

He has two naps a day usually totalling 2.5-3hours but somedays he tries not to sleep at all when hes at the grandparents or you just cant get him to go down! He wakes anytime between 6/7 most days and we try to get him to bed between7/8pm.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

:)

@Emmap85 hi

@Indecisivelurcher update

Well DD I think did pretty well last night. She did wake up a few times but it was more in her sleep so she didn't actually wake up. So I just tapped her a few times and then she woke up at 7.50am. So was quite pleased with that. I just hope the frequent waking soon stops.

Awwww I can imagine it must be difficult for you. I have done a lot of reading on sleep training and it does say you have to stay consistent to see results. But every baby is different. It also does mention that after 2 weeks if the sleep training hasn't made a difference or hasn't worked then this method isn't the one and you can try a different one. I hope it gets better for you. Fingers crossed.

Well done! I'm glad you had a bit of a better night last night. If I was you I'd go for a nap at 12:30, car or buggy assisted if necessary. Hopefully for at least 1.5hrs. And then bed by 7 at the latest. See how it goes. Its trying to weigh up getting enough sleep in her, and aiming for something that you stand a chance of actually achieving.

Daisyflower12345 · 06/10/2020 09:11

@Indecisivelurcher yes thank to you an what you suggested this happened otherwise I would've never actually thought of putting her to bed at 7pm lol.

Yes so hopefully plan is give her a nap around 12ish for at least 2hours and then the same tonight bed by 7pm. Let's hope this all works an she starts getting up less through the night xx

@Daisyflower12345

That's great glad you had a better night!

Im at work today so we'll see how DH gets on with nap times today! We'll just have to decide when to start sleep training now . I'm working every night/eve this week and its his 1st birthday on Saturday so maybe after that would be best!

Hope you have a good day today! fingers crossed xx

Daisyflower12345 · 06/10/2020 09:52

@Emmap85 yes I think it's better if you start after his 1st birthday and then you can just try an focus on the sleep training.

There are quite a few different methods you can do if you have a look online. Fingers crossed for you an hope u find a way that works for you an DS.

Thank you let's hope today my DD does actually go down for her nap haha.

Hoping you got some sleep @Daisyflower12345, how are you getting on?

@Emmap85 I'm not sure I can offer any advice in this scenario, neither of mine sleep any better when we tried co-sleeping and I slept arguably worse, so we didn't go down that route. It does sound like it could be separation anxiety related if you can pin it on starting back at work. In which case I'd probably try upping the comfort and security levels in their own cot.

Do you have a night light? Red ones are best because Blue light can interfere with melatonin levels. You can get them on amazon. What about white noise? My 3 & 5yi still have white noise, you can buy plug in white noise machines on amazon again. What about a comforter or favourite cuddly toy? Can be a good age to introduce one. Once that's covered off you could try putting your little one to bed and sitting with them, then moving further away. So gradual retreat. Or popping in and out pretty frequently so they know they're not alone. Depending on personality, for example that would have made my Dd mad!

Daisyflower12345 · 07/10/2020 07:19

@Indecisivelurcher Hey yes a great night last night thankfully.

DD did take a while going down last night so she eventually fell asleep at 7.50pm. So today will try a lot more earlier to put her to bed because I took her up about 6.30pm which was quite late by the time we sorted her for bed like bath etc. So today will start about 6.15pm so she is actually asleep by 7pm.

So she woke up at 1.40am I gave her bottle and she fell asleep an didn't wake up till 6.30am which is a massive improvement so was very pleased with that.

So again today will do nap time around 12ish and then get ready for bed 6.15am an I'm hoping tonight she will actually fall asleep by 7pm.

Again thank u so much for your help.
