New thread for night (and daytime!) chatter for those awake more than they'd like with a non sleeping baby/child 😊

My DS is five months. First baby likely to be only baby if I don't start getting more sleep He is a nap and sleep fighter but incredibly cute so I choose to forgive him 😂

Ahhh it was you AMagdalena going dairy free, how are you finding it?
The doctor I saw had a quick look at the photo of the nappy with blood and said it's quite normal and probably comes from the nipples. I didn't quite understand this as I've never noticed any blood on my nipples bit he just said that babies suck quite hard so that makes sense. I told him about our feeding problems, being fussy and agitated on the boob, looking as if in discomfort, and the tongue tie issues and that the nurse who did the devision mentioned that he could potentially be suffering from a dairy intolerance. He then said "oh no it's very very rare that babies are lactose intolerant (I said that I was aware that dairy intolerance is not that uncommon but I got the impression that he thought I was going a bit ott), sneezing several times daily and sounding congested is normal for a baby. Let's just relax a little, he's putting on weight and seems happy so just keep going." I really wish I had seen our actual doctor as she is lovely and even if she'd come to the same conclusion as his then I know she would have explained it a lot better. I don't really know what to think, I mean blood from my nipples showing in his nappies, really?? Any thoughts??

Catscatsandmorecats · 02/02/2018 00:48

sakura that doesn't sound right, can you ask to see your own GP for a second opinion?

For anyone dairy free, I found this recipe for dairy, egg, and soya free chocolate cake for some of DS1'S friends who have awful allergies, it's quite good: www.netmums.com/coffeehouse/food-feeding-555/recipes-557/1128982-dairy-free-egg-free-soya-free-chocolate-cake.html

@Lallypopstick that sleep training sounds amazing I'm pretty sure I've bought that book in my haze in the first couple but literally never read it and it's in a pile with like 2 or 3 other books must read that then for sure!

My DS is finally back on the weight trajectory for his age and from the weight he was born as which is a massive relief, we still have major issues with reflux which ranitidine has been helping but now dosage needs to be increased ASAP as huge weight difference to when it was first prescribed and if gas definitely helped with the discomfort however regurgitation, spit up and vomiting still happening he's on nutramigen for suspected CMPA but I don't think he is allergic and feel it's all down to the reflux issue so calling Drs tomorrow to get advice on dosage he should be on and for thickener I'm guessing caribel any got experience of using that and does it give them constipation?

Sakura03 · 02/02/2018 02:35

Catscatsandmorecats that's what my dp suggested. I don't want to be seen as awkward but the fact that this doctor referred to lactose intolerance as soon as I mentioned dairy made me wonder how clued up on these things he is as you don't have to be lactose intolerant to have an intolerance to cows milk, cheese etc. And then the blood coming from my nipples... hmmm yeah I should probably ask to see my own doctor for a second opinion. Do I say that when I book or? Perhaps I can be vague and just day there are a couple of things I'd like to see her about.

Sakura03 · 02/02/2018 03:01

I didn't even mention my suspicion of ds having reflux issues as I just felt like this doctor thought I was totally overreacting and felt uncomfortable bit ds always seems as if he's got a lot of fluid in his mouth and sometimes he looks as if he's trying to chew or swallow to get rid. He often wakes pulling faces again as of his got something irritating him in his mouth or throat. He spits up quite often and often chokes on the boob. I just want what's best for ds. He's not miserable and doesn't scream only occasionally on the boob when he's getting agitated, fussing or perhaps being in discomfort.

We're off to the osteopath tomorrow, last time we went ds slept so well in that first night so I hope we'll have a repeat of thatSmile as his sleep has been awful this week...

Sakura03 · 02/02/2018 03:02

I mean today...

DiscombobulatedWomble · 02/02/2018 03:15

The awkward moment when you drop your bloody phone on the sleeping baby Blush thankfully not from a great hight & she seems to have gone back to sleep Shock

Meepmoop · 02/02/2018 08:41

@DiscombobulatedWomble I reckon everyone has done that, I know I have

Zampa · 02/02/2018 09:35

OH is off work today and let me have a lie in whilst he looked after both girls. I woke up so groggy - it was very disorientating.

Then, I got the fear that he had left the baby alone and she'd died so had to run and find her. She was fine, of course, but I gave myself a scare.

Jellybean2017 · 02/02/2018 12:51

Awful night here. Wouldn't settle for three hours at start of night. Slept a bit then awake for hours. I'm shattered and he is a grumpy little thing today. Meant to be going to baby sensory in an hour but not worth it when he is like this!

Why did I think giving DS a piece of my omelette in his jumperoo was a good idea. Literally everywhere. The dog is happy to clean up though..

We had a late night as was MIL official birthday yesterday so have a cranky baby.

AMagdalena · 02/02/2018 13:42

@Sakura First of all, the doctor you spoke to is wrong ro refer to dairy allergy (CMPA) as lactose intolerance. Lactose intolerance is in fact extremely rare, but lactose is a sugar, while CMPA is an allergy to cows's milk protein, so they are different things.
The symptoms you describe sound all too familiar to me.
I would insist on a referral to a paediatrician and dietician as in ny experience, GP's tend to have limoted knowledge of allergies.
It took ages to diagnose my DD.
As for going dairy free, I have found it pretty easy, to be honest. There are loads of replacement foods, but I am now on a much more limiting diet. While not fun, it's still doable.
There is a CMPA support for breastfeeding group on FB which I can recommend.

DD struggled with wind last night.

Noo poo yet 💩🙈

AMagdalena · 02/02/2018 13:42

Apologies for typo's. I have terrible eczema on my hands and it's pretty painful.

Catscatsandmorecats · 02/02/2018 18:57

amagdalena your dedication to the restricted diet is impressive.

Meepmoop just the thought of omlette combined with a jumperoo made me chuckle, I'm glad the dog enjoyed it!

We had a dreadful night last night, DS2 was up loads and has become increasingly difficult to lay down at all the last two days. Today, there seems to be a tooth coming through so that would explain it! He's woken in pain an unsettled after 40 minutes this evening so have given ibuprofen and extra boob in the hope he'll go off. We could be in for a looooooong night.

Meepmoop · 02/02/2018 19:58

My baby doesn't want to go to sleep. He's screamed for the last hour and now is quietly staring in to space but not sleeping

WhoAteAllthePercyPigs · 02/02/2018 20:10

@discombobulatedwomble I dropped my Kindle on DD once! Luckily she's still here to tell the tale Wink

@sakura I agree - you are most definitely being fobbed off! Can't believe what he said about the blood - that's surely rubbish! Sadly it seems you have to push very hard to get anywhere with these issues.

Been quiet here as I've had family staying and am also trying to cut down screen time to help me go back to sleep. Last two nights have been a bit better. His cold seems to be improving although he's still very snotty.

Bring on tonight...

AMagdalena · 02/02/2018 20:16

My baby doesn't want to sleep either.
Currently chatting away to herself and smiling... Hmm

xxrealistmumxx · 02/02/2018 20:40

Eurgh, going from bad to worse here. Now LO won't even settle for the first part of the evening. OH currently doing laid around the house with him Confused

Spoke to the gp today. Guess what she recommended?? Controlled crying / Ferber method. She said it's too early at five months though but that it works.... She used it with her son when he was seven months old.

AMagdalena · 02/02/2018 20:51

@realistmum Don't think the GP should be recommending this method for a baby this young...Doesn't matter if she agress with it or not. It's against NHS guidelines.
What is it with doctors these days?!
How old is your LO?

DD has now decided it's time for sleep after all after I'd switched the bedside table lamp off.
No poo today 🙈 It's going to be a poonami when it comes.

AMagdalena · 02/02/2018 20:52

Ah, baby brain today. You did put your LO is 5 months old.
Mmm could be leap 5 hence the problems sleeping?

xxrealistmumxx · 02/02/2018 21:07

Oh no, is there another leap looming?? All this leap/ regression stuff wasn't around when my other two were babies so I don't know much about it. Also not entirely sure I buy into it as I didn't have these issues with the other two... Still, I guess it helps to be given a reason for the dreadful sleep. Don't even feel like we've got over leap 4 yet!!

AMagdalena · 02/02/2018 21:45

@realistmum I think the 1st year is just full of them.
Not sure about Leap 5, but Leap was definitely bad; I mean BAD.

My husband just got in bed and fell asleep within 10s. Why can't I do it?
And more importantly, why can't DD? Sad

Sakura03 · 02/02/2018 23:30

AMagdalena and WhoAteAllthePercyPigs I emailed the tongue tie practitioner to update her on the outcome from our doctor appointment as she’s the one who mentioned that blood in the poo could be a dairy intolerance. She wasn’t impressed and has offered to write to the surgery and raise concerns about the doctor I saw “as he needs educating” she also suggested I book in to see my own doctor which I have but she is not available until the 28 February.

Took ds to his second osteopath appointment today, he loves the treatment and she’s booked us in for another session towards the end of the month but said that if I keep up the exercises he may not need to come back as his jaw and back are a lot better.

Ds has slept a lot this afternoon, fed loads tonight and been a little cranky. Currently asleep on me so will attempt a cot transfer now.

HashtagTired · 03/02/2018 03:25

The 16 week BIG leap passed us by. His sleep is so rubbish anyway that I didn't notice the leap tbh! Small mercies.

Catscatsandmorecats · 03/02/2018 03:29

Its quiet on here tonight,I hope everyone is getting some sleep.

Both boys are awake, I physically cannot do the recommended tactics with DS1 and feed D S2 at the same time. DS2 wasn't due to wake for another hour but he's sleeping so badly because of his teeth he woke with the noise of DS1 getting up and coughing ( will the coughs and colds ever end?). DS2 really doesn't need a feed but he does need the comfort of it to get back to sleep without a lot of screaming that would wake DS1 up even further. Poor DS1 is coughing away and not able to get back to sleep. Once I've fed and resettled DS2 I expect I'll have another hour in with DS1. ARG!

DH in the meantime needs to be sleeping as he has a long drive ahead of him tomorrow but is awake because he's been disturbed. He can't feed DS2 and DS1 won't go back to sleep for him so sleeping is the best thing he can do.

I'm not holding out much hope of any more sleep for me tonight.
