How often do you check on a sleeping 4 year old?

To settle an argument between DH and I, I am wondering how often other parents check on their children while they're sleeping? I check on DD twice in the evening, quick check of her chest rise and fall a few times and that she's not too hot and that's it. DH thinks we should be doing a quick check every hour. Am I not checking enough?

Um. A quick glance in as I go to bed?

Fairylea · 09/01/2016 22:58

A 4 year old?! Not months old? Gosh I check once when I go to bed and that's about it! I'm sure they'll yell if they need you!

Wolfiefan · 09/01/2016 22:59

I don't.

VikingLady · 09/01/2016 23:00

I check on her if she goes quiet suspiciously quickly, or if she's ill.

Your DH sounds a little obsessive about it. Are you meant to set an alarm? Is there a back story?

dementedpixie · 09/01/2016 23:00

I check on my way to bed and that's it

Twitterqueen · 09/01/2016 23:00

Check every hour? How are you supposed to relax or get a proper night's sleep? No no no. Completely ridiculous.

And, without wishing to be really horrible here, if your child is ill or feverish she will call, cry, shout. If - God forbid - anything worse like SID should occur, it happens within a matter of minutes. So unless you spend every single minute of every waking and sleeping hour watching over her you cannot prevent such things.

Your DH is extremely over-anxious

SweetAdeline · 09/01/2016 23:00

I don't check at all.

ThisFenceIsComfy · 09/01/2016 23:01

Umm I don't check at all.

kinkytoes · 09/01/2016 23:01

I only check my 2 year old once when I go to bed and then again if I get up in the night for any reason.

MajesticSeaFlapFlap · 09/01/2016 23:01

I creep in as I'm going to bed, pull the duvet back over her, kiss on forehead and done.

LovelyFriend · 09/01/2016 23:03

Sometimes once.
Most nights I don't.

Haggisfish · 09/01/2016 23:04

Not al all here, either.

EskSmith · 09/01/2016 23:04

Why would you check every hour whilst you are awake but not (presumably ) whilst you are asleep? What are you hoping to achieve by these checks. Dd2 is 6 now but from about 2 I have checked as I go to bed to ensure she is tucked in (she kicks covers off but wakes as house cools) otherwise I wouldn't even do this tbh.

AnnoyedByAlfieBear · 09/01/2016 23:04

I don't even check on my 15 month old unless she's ill (she's a light sleeper), let alone the 3 year old!

WinterBabyof89 · 09/01/2016 23:04

At least once to re-centre him in the bed.. Much more than that is a tad excessive in my view

Thurlow · 09/01/2016 23:09

We have the monitor on until we go to bed as we wouldn't hear in our house if she cried as she's oddly not a child to get out of bed. But we only go in quickly when we go to bed, and then switch it off. And only if have the monitor on because if she's ever unsettled it'll be about half nine when we've got the telly on loud.

ShowOfHands · 09/01/2016 23:11

On my way to bed. That's it. We live in a tiny terrace though. I can hear them breathing from my room.

ghnocci · 09/01/2016 23:11

Once on the way to bed.

And I'm a pretty anxious parent.

Only1scoop · 09/01/2016 23:11

I'm a checker but just before I fall asleep then in the night when I wake for the loo?

Every hour? Through the night?
How?

Tinofsardines · 09/01/2016 23:14

Not a 4yo but my 3yo and 19mo don't get checked!!

horseygeorgie · 09/01/2016 23:14

quick glance in on the way past to bed! Think your DH is a little over anxious.

ThomasRichard · 09/01/2016 23:14

Once as I'm on my way to bed. I usually have to remove all the Lego, untangle him from the duvet and tuck him in nicely so he doesn't get cold later on. Then it's a quick kiss, smile because he looks so cute when he's sleeping and that's it.

If he was ill I'd check him more often.

ineedamoreadultieradult · 09/01/2016 23:17

I don't.
