How often do you check on a sleeping 4 year old?

To settle an argument between DH and I, I am wondering how often other parents check on their children while they're sleeping? I check on DD twice in the evening, quick check of her chest rise and fall a few times and that she's not too hot and that's it. DH thinks we should be doing a quick check every hour. Am I not checking enough?

Another one who just used to pop head in on way to bed.

We still use a video monitor with our 4 yo. I know most people don't anymore by this age but he has asc, and quite likes to know we can see and hear him in his bed. Also means I know exactly what time he falls asleep and wakes up in the morning. Would something like that help? Save you from having to go in and check on your dd. We can zoom in and see him breathing away happily, don't have to go into his room so no fear of waking him either! It's really cute hearing him recite his favourite books, quoting tv and movies, rehearsing conversations or see him practising tree fu Tom moves!

Mine are older than 4, but I always check them before going to bed. They are at their best when they are asleep and I can go to bed with a heart full of love for them. I don't check on them otherwise (unless ill) and I haven't since they slept through.

We had a baby monitor on our 4 year old until he was nearly 4, only because he would cry in bed rather than get out of bed and find us in the night. Following the birth of our twins in October he's slowly learned to come and find us, so we've got rid of the monitor. Now one of us will check on him as we go to bed, tick him back in etc. Any more than that and I'd be worried about waking him!

I don't Blush is that bad?

DP will, he will check on his way to bed and if he wakes in the night for any reason like toilet then he will check her again.

DS is still in with us so I glance at him on my way to bed otherwise i wouldn't check him either!!
Both have monitors though.

DS has just turned 4, we check once before we go to bed. I can hear his breathing if I stand outside his bedroom door Grin

I listen for snoring breathing outside DD1's (almost 3) door when I go to bed and if I happen to wake up for the loo in the night. Put the blanket she's kicked off back over her if needed but that's it.

I only check on my 2 year old if she's sick. Once she's in bed she generally sleeps through with no problems.

Thank you to everyone that's posted, very much appreciated. I think DH is perhaps being a tad over anxious!! We still use a monitor too so it probably is a bit OTT! 😉

Unless your house is enormous or he has form for getting up and playing quietly with his toys mid-evening, you probably don't need to use a baby monitor Wink

Minikievs · 10/01/2016 11:17

I check once between his bedtime and my bedtime. But only because I have a 2 year old in the next room that I check on (once) so I might as well check him at the same time. Other than that, they have a quick check before I go to bed and that's it
