Wonder how many feel as disappointed as me????

spidermama · 13/08/2005 23:02

Milk banks would be fantastic.

moondog · 13/08/2005 23:02

Was rather crestfallen to notice a while back that SMA had sponosored an (admittedly very good) guide to speech and lang. development in association with ICAN.

Is there nothing they don't interfere with?? Once again, question of money, money, money sigh....
(Jimjams, that should give you a big clue as to my alter ego-we chat regularly. Sssssh though!)

Yes, have been seeing those specious ads in teh Indie each week. It is those, rather than the mn one (which I didn't notice) that have annoyed me most since they pose as features.

moondog · 13/08/2005 23:03

Used to be loads of milkbanks spider. HIV and AIDS scares closed most of 'em down.

Ahhhh moondog- If you are who I think you are we've had a fight before when I was posting under a different name Funny isn't it how you respond differently when you know who you're talking to......

True true Tinker- although I still think its at grass rooots that it has to be changed. My mother has always been bizarre about bfeeding and at the first sign of trouble says "hmm think you'd better stop now- you've done it for long enough". I think it goes back to her experience of getting an abcess (ouch!) She was horrifiied that I fed ds2 to over 2 hee hee. But without support from other areas I guess her views would have been more influential.

I really have to go to bed... Night all.

Jimjams · 13/08/2005 23:10

7 months and I am trying to get him to get ready to exercise his pointy fingers. Just a little paranoid

moondog · 13/08/2005 23:12

Cloak and dagger Jimjams eh?

If we fought,it must only have been about b/feeding as that is the only thing on MN that gets me heated (oh,and more recently on multi-culturalism.)

Never fought with you as jj tmk. Actually put up aspirited defence of you recently, even if i say so meself....

Anyway,back to topic....

Jimjams · 13/08/2005 23:17

Yes you did and I was very grateful! Actually that whole thread was quite touching in the end.

It wasn't a big punch-up - just a mini-disagreement about a certain autistic adult and how much she could control herself (work it out and then you'll know my very occasional alter-ego- only used in times of flouncing )

JulieF · 13/08/2005 23:19

This is the ad SMA were prosecuted over here

There is now an excellent peer support scheme in the area where I now live. I am a peer supporter now myself haveing breastfed ds. I feel that having done both I have a good persepctive and so can be non judgmental.

Hopefully things are beginning to slowly change.

moondog · 13/08/2005 23:20

I will have fun sleuthing but...wasn't the one I was thinking aboutI!It was when a person who does the same job as me accused you of having a chip on your shoulder about people who do our job iyswim.

(Sorry everyone...ignore us!)

OP posts:
Jimjams · 13/08/2005 23:23

No - I sussed out that one- that was the one I was saying was very touching! I was genuinely suprised (nicely) how many people stood up for me. And I was very toouched by your post in particular.

The other one - about the autistic adult- was the mini-disagreement when I was posting under a differtent name (i remmber at the time thinking it was funny because people were responding differently)

moondog · 13/08/2005 23:23

JUlieF..so was it 'the best ever start' that was the clincher??

OP posts:
moondog · 13/08/2005 23:25

You've taught me a lot and that poster was waaaaay out of order.

Wilstill be sleuthing obviously.l

OP posts:
Jimjams · 13/08/2005 23:28

OK bed! Happy sleuthing. Clue - the name I was using means idiot in Japanese

I'm stunned that ad was used- surely its blatant advertising for first stage milk and therefore illegal?

But I'm thinking you know tax them fund some bfeeding support

moondog · 13/08/2005 23:49

You'll have gone now jj,but yes, remember the thread now. (Duh,post natal brain!) Now I've got to find the bloody thing and work it out form there!

OP posts:
moondog · 13/08/2005 23:56

Gotcha!!!!

OP posts:
JulieF · 14/08/2005 00:05

Well yes it was blatant advertising but SMA thought they could get away with it. They were fined 60k!!

moondog · 14/08/2005 00:11

Wonder where that cash went??

OP posts:
JulieF · 14/08/2005 00:23

I think over half of it went in court costs. Birmingham Trading Standards took a hell of a risk taking this case to court as it had never been done before.

Caligula · 14/08/2005 10:33

It's not just a question of information, though is it, it's also help. I had loads of information, but no help. Part of the decision was the subconscious belief that there wasn't that much difference anyway, and part of the decision was knowing that I needed informed support to do it, and recognising that there was none and I was on my own (the nearest BF counsellor was 2 bus rides away and only once a week).

And that first bit of the decision comes back to advertising and promotion. Even if we taxed ads to get money for promotion, how would we stop that subliminal message that "it's near as dammit" without producing counter-propaganda which was a complete militant turn-off?

moondog · 14/08/2005 11:31

I do however secretly question how much actual 'help' can be given though,Caligula. Ultimately the mother herself has to feed the child-this can induce terror or pride, depending on how its going (sometimes both-in my case anyway.)

Maybe I'm just an old cynic who feels that any of my problems (practicalor emotional)have to be solved by me alone.

Three cheers for Birmingham Trading Standards?
(Where did the ad appear?)

Infant formula manufactuers have pots of money which allows them to pay medical experts to produce arguments that suit their paymasters as well as marketing and communications experts who can subliminally influence us all and dream up clever ways to get round the ban.

A recent publication by the formula manufacturers designed to influence Department of Health, midwives, and others in positions of power or influence claimed to agree that breast was best but then went to a great deal of trouble to undermine all the evidence behind breastfeeding, with selective quoting of research etc. etc. They were arguing for a lifting of the ban because the say they aren't allowed to 'inform' mothers who bottlefeed. It seems to be one of those areas where constant vigilence is needed to fight against powerful interests.
