Dear mumsnet

Can you please do a check and see if quickchange / getreal and shinyone are all the same person and if so can you have a private word or perhaps look into barring them.

Things like this usually are water off a ducks back to me personally but she/he/it risks really, really causing serious pain to reqular mumsnetters and I think it might be a good idea to look into this.

Just an idea.

If this person is changing her name all the time just to say spiteful, nasty, things on mumsnet surely we want that stopped, right??
Anyway, nuff said, over to you to do what you think is best.

im there too.... i havent posted on a lot of the recent threads because there is too many hurtful comments being made.

PLEASE Mumnest HQ, get this stopped. It is making MN not such a nice place to be, and I really love your site and really dont want to leave.

name changing is being abused and not used as it was intended, and is being used my vicious people just to wind up / upset/ or cause controversy...
i personally think it is not more trouble than its worth...theres far to many threads about who is x and what theyve said.

This seems to be an upsetting problem on Mumsnet right now. Please e-mail HQ on [email protected] if you spot something that looks like name-changing/trolling to cause upset or offence.

With the debate ongoing about whether or not name-changing should be allowed at all or limited, it does help the MN team to know of specific examples where it has distressed other posters.

I have called their attention specifically to the PleaseGetReal aftermath by the way.

People have enjoyed a jolly good laugh at The Mumsnet Philosophy in the past and implied that poor old Mods like us who quote it are sad losers who need to lighten up and enjoy some lively cut and thrust etc.

But it does exist for good reasons, and one of them is to call to account people who feel compelled to change their name to post something they are too cowardly or ashamed to say as "themselves".

Name changing can be harmless good fun, for isntance when ever anyone mentions Wig & Robe or Judge Flounce, I try to appear as the The Judge... it is always brief and always harmless.........You called etc.,

Sorry, not supporting nasty name changes, would hate to silly nonsense eradicated on the back of it either.

The Mallory Towers ,Enid Blyton thread would not have been half as funny if we had all stuck to our own names.

but not everyones as nce as you LGJ, they dont do it for a laugh unfortunatly..cant think of any other way to stop all the pathetic trolls from getting on here with the sole intention to upset?

Absolutley JJG but I know you agree that it if one poster is changing her name just to be nasty then MN might want to be aware and perhaps look into this. They can find out who changes their name to what. It's abuse of the name changing facility, that and disgustingly cowardly and sick.

Yes it can be good fun - but has been demonstarted in recent days is can also be very harmful/spiteful.

I support a 'no name change' or 'limited' or 'mods approval' name changes for personal stuff - but I also KNOW that we're all bright enough (well most of us) to be able to have a good laught without having to change names.....

I used to be a big supporter of people being able to change their names but after the posts I've seen lately I'm no longer so sure.

Stopping name changing will not stop this.

It is easy enough to register with another email address and do it that way...

but soupy - name changing is EXTREMELY quick and easy, re-registering with a different email addresses requires people to set up new email addresses too..........which takes more time, and 'in general' most trolls/malicious posters won't be bothered with that.

I think it's important to be able to change a name for some personal matters, there is a thread which I have contributed to recently under my name but the original poster was and is anonymous for very good reasons. I considered posting anonymously on that thread for personal reasons but decided i was better using my usual name.

I can't believe how nasty some recent posts and threads have been and it bothers me a great deal that people will change their name to say something cruel and mean but wish not to have their "normal" presumably nice fluffy popular identity compromised. How cynical is that?

I think it still should be possible to change names, I use another one for example for "business" where i don't want to leave an identity trail to my mn self (just for security).

Perhaps a warning needs to come up when you change nicknames that you must adhere to mn philosophy in posting and a name change will not indemnify you from them.

I have quite a few email addys, so it wouldn't be hard for me....

the only post I have read that is relevant to this is the one on titanias thread, and although I agree it is pretty tactless it isn't actually that offensive is it?

Sorry Lemonice, you had me there - I don't know anything about you and had very dodgy images in my head about what sort of "business" you were referring too!!!

Sorry Gwenick, I disagree. If they have something to say that they want to make a false name for, they will do it. It's naive to think that it wiill stop, sorry. A lot of people have more than one email address already so the extra time needed to regster will be minimal.
