... well here's why. Many many Mumsnet moons ago a small thread sat on a leaf was started. That thread was titled: "If oyu name si Linda you are an admin perosn at a hospital" and, once folks had deciphered it, it went on to blossom into a Mumsnet classic.

Anyway, as we are wont to do here at MNHQ, we pounced on your ingenuity, wit and brilliance and thought (whilst stroking our beards) how can we plagiarise this idea? And lo after many months locked in the shed with nothing more than a Greggs' sausage roll and a froot shoot for company, Tech has transformed your our scheme into (we hope you'll agree) a corruscating and beautiful reality.

For no longer will you have sweat over the relative merits of Thomasina vs Sequoia for your baby girl - now you can just ask the wisdom of Mumsnet (at least you will be able to once we've all added our two pennies worth to it).

And so, without further ado, let us unveil the Mumsnet Baby Name Finder. Whether it's a Precious First Born or a soon to be Neglected Subsequent Child you're looking to name, you'll find the perfect moniker right here.

Please have a play and let your prejudices run riot!

(ps please bear in mind it's meant to be light-hearted - we don't really think any of offspring will grow up to be Hedge Fund Managers )

D'ya think you could change the Jamess to James'. It took me a while to work out wtf 'Unfortunate Jamess' meant.

JustineMumsnet · 21/07/2009 23:37

Eek sorry, that should have said

We'll see if we can sort the anonymity option too - though think it may be less of an issue ONCE ZILLIONS MORE PEOPLE FILL IT IN.

(anyway we'll see if can sort it pronto)

perhaps "most unpopular" rather than hated or unloved - I would really object to the idea that my child's name was unloved, that sounds dreadful, as though the child itself was unloved!

TeaMonster · 22/07/2009 09:42

You need to add Jammy Dodgers - please

bleh · 22/07/2009 09:46

I would like to complain that someone put "Laura Ashley" as the clothing choice for my RL name.

I do NOT shop in Laura Ashley. Not impressed.

SetSquare · 22/07/2009 09:48

how can i not make it work?

mollyroger · 22/07/2009 10:22

we need something geeky as career option!

and agree we need farmer's market/home grown
and lentil weavery options for food and clothes!

artichokes · 22/07/2009 10:45

Hilarious

artichokes · 22/07/2009 10:46

That wasn't sarcastic. I love it .

HelenMumsnet · 22/07/2009 11:25

Morning!

OK, so we've fixed it so that adding names is anonymous now - so all of you who secretly named your child Tatiana-Dandelion-Blossom can come out of the woodwork.

And you should now be able to add names, even if the Search throws up nothing similar.

But we're not adding extra biscuits just yet - we'd only have another bunfight at MNHQ...

HelenMumsnet · 22/07/2009 11:53

Oops, it's not adding a name that's now anonymous but any comments you make about a name.

ingles2 · 22/07/2009 15:10

Helen, What about names we added when we weren't anonymous? I added a couple yesterday that have my name attached and I'd like it removed please. or perhaps just remove those particular names altogether?

HelenMumsnet · 22/07/2009 19:53

Ingles2, if you made any comments about names, your nickname will now have been removed.

If you added new names, your nickname will still be showing next to it.

I'm sure if/when we're planning to change that bit but, in the meantime, if you need to throw people off the scent, as it were, you could always add a few more random names in...

Jux · 22/07/2009 21:28

Oh it is fab - I've been playing for 5 mins or more. I'm not going to get an early night tonight after all!

Well done and thank you for a new game.

ingles2 · 22/07/2009 22:22

Helen please please can you edit the name then? I added my son's name and then put in his nickname which is what makes it so identifiable (sorry was obviously having a stupid 5 minutes there) The nickname includes cowpat

edam · 22/07/2009 22:39

Wow, Justine, this is the ONLY online baby name thingummy that has got the derivation of my own name right. Bloody well done that woman.

(And thank you for being jolly nice about ds's name, too. )

I can always spot a badly-researched, rushed-out-to-make-money baby name directory by looking up mine... if they have just assumed it's a variant of a better-known name with some of the same letters, I know they haven't really tried!

HelenMumsnet · 22/07/2009 23:00

lol at cowpat, ingles2 - will see what I can do to fix that for you tomorrow.

Edam: I tell you, Justine's head hasn't been out of those darn name-derivation books for WEEKS

JustineMumsnet · 22/07/2009 23:01

Not a problem Edam - we do what we can...

monkeytrousers · 23/07/2009 08:25

Barista?

Is that what I was doing scraping a living in London all those years ago, alla Maggie in Extras??

foofi · 23/07/2009 08:41

What an odd list of jobs - nothing arty like dancer/musician/actor?

belgo · 23/07/2009 09:36

It's been keeping me from strangling the kids occupied all morning

ThingOne · 23/07/2009 09:42

Very funny!

furrycat · 23/07/2009 09:54

Ha, Ingles2 I think we have sons with the same name. And of COURSE their favourite biscuit is not on the list!

ingles2 · 23/07/2009 10:14

Thankyou Helen... LOL furrycat.. surely no-one (other than me) is daft enough to nickname their child cowpat

FrannyandZooey · 23/07/2009 10:27

the meaning of 'daniel' is showing up as "good left wing footballer"
