Ok so you know we asked you about biscuits and Austin Reed...

... well here's why. Many many Mumsnet moons ago a small thread sat on a leaf was started. That thread was titled: "If oyu name si Linda you are an admin perosn at a hospital" and, once folks had deciphered it, it went on to blossom into a Mumsnet classic.

Anyway, as we are wont to do here at MNHQ, we pounced on your ingenuity, wit and brilliance and thought (whilst stroking our beards) how can we plagiarise this idea? And lo after many months locked in the shed with nothing more than a Greggs' sausage roll and a froot shoot for company, Tech has transformed your our scheme into (we hope you'll agree) a corruscating and beautiful reality.

For no longer will you have sweat over the relative merits of Thomasina vs Sequoia for your baby girl - now you can just ask the wisdom of Mumsnet (at least you will be able to once we've all added our two pennies worth to it).

And so, without further ado, let us unveil the Mumsnet Baby Name Finder. Whether it's a Precious First Born or a soon to be Neglected Subsequent Child you're looking to name, you'll find the perfect moniker right here.

Please have a play and let your prejudices run riot!

(ps please bear in mind it's meant to be light-hearted - we don't really think any of offspring will grow up to be Hedge Fund Managers )

Madamecastafiore - whatever it suggests for yours she's better not be in ths same year st school as mine - we don't want two whatever they are calleds!

funnypeculiar · 21/07/2009 19:42

Where's the link to add Justine - when I do that, the search box text just changes to 'Sorry no matches' msg.

dd has a LOVELY name & you've somehow missed it

theyoungvisiter · 21/07/2009 19:49

I just searched for a name in the "tell me" box - no match and no link to add it...?

The rest seems to work though.

JustineMumsnet · 21/07/2009 19:50

Of course you can add your own HeadFairy - you could choose to be honest about what it says to you (or not).

Funnypeculiar - that's funnypeculiar - you should get the option to add it if it's not there in our list - maybe mail contactus and we'll take a look?

Right am off to get a bite to eat - will stop in later on - enjoy fiddling.

pmsl @ barista

twoluvlykids · 21/07/2009 19:53

I like it! Unfortunately, I'm not in the market for finding a new baby's name, but it was a bit of fun.

HeadFairy · 21/07/2009 19:54

Well I've been 100% honest about my name Justine

HeadFairy · 21/07/2009 19:58

Is there any way you can add a link at the top of the page so I don't have to go in to this thread every time I think of a name I want to add...

HeadFairy · 21/07/2009 19:58

ooops forgot to add a ?

and a please

Hassled · 21/07/2009 20:05

Well I could spend long happy hours here. Strange how I decide that just about every name I enter would prefer to eat Party Rings, though.

Wallace · 21/07/2009 20:06

Like it

If you add a name does it say who contributed it? I would like to put some names in it but don't want to give away too much

MinnieMummy · 21/07/2009 20:08

I am a total suckup and have just added 'JustineMumsnet' to the 'Interesting Justines' list.

It's in my family, I didn't search it to be a total suck-up, would like to add...

HelenMumsnet · 21/07/2009 20:10

HeadFairy - they'll be a proper link up the top somewhere tomorrow soon. We're just letting you have a leetle dabble before it's properly let loose.

Wallace - yes, it's anonymous. We won't have a clue that you've put Cedric and Desdemona in... (oops)

Can I just warn people....if you put comments at the top they are tagged with your MN name

HelenMumsnet · 21/07/2009 20:13

MinneMummy: did you put Justine down as a Custard Cream-eater or a Fig Roll-muncher?

MinnieMummy · 21/07/2009 20:13

Hmm, it says my name against the name I added... even logged out to see if it's still the case and it is...

coppertop · 21/07/2009 20:15

Why can't I add a name? When I put a new one in it just says:

You can add a new name once you've searched for it and seen the results.

Sorry, no matching names found

MinnieMummy · 21/07/2009 20:15

I only filled in the bit that says 'Sounds like a boy's name' (sorry - but like I say, family name, lost count of the number of morons people who say 'Justin' instead). Will think on the biscuit issue once I've put my food delivery away!

Hassled · 21/07/2009 20:16

Yes, I did belatedly realise that I had effectively outed myself by adding a particular name - is there any way that particular feature could go? I mean the "added by" bit.

HelenMumsnet · 21/07/2009 20:17

Ah! Yes, I see what you mean about it saying who's added a name - sorry, I didn't know about that

nickytwotimes · 21/07/2009 20:21

God, I am loving this.

coppertop · 21/07/2009 20:22

Eeek! Can't the comments be anonymous?

Apologies to all MNers with children/relatives/friends called Ravi.

FritesMenthe · 21/07/2009 20:23

Don't like the way it displays my nickname when I add some content eg Interesting xxx.

Fun though

HelenMumsnet · 21/07/2009 20:23

Ok, I will ask about the anonymity thing in the morning
