Should mumsnet be moderated?

Is it maybe time for mumsnet to get a few moderators on board?

OP posts:
Tamarto · 15/05/2009 11:30

Doesn't that have all sorts of legal implications?

AnarchyAunt · 15/05/2009 11:31

No no no no!

I like the self moderation of MN.

LovelyRitaMeterMaid · 15/05/2009 11:32

It used to have moderators didn't it? When did they stop and why?

kittywise · 15/05/2009 11:32

No, it's fine as it is, it's self moderated.

The good thing here is that you can speak in a way that is not possible on the kissy, hun boards.

Fimbo · 15/05/2009 11:32

We had them before. I prefer it when Justine & co takecharge tbh

VinegarTits · 15/05/2009 11:33

I dont think it should, it has survived this long without them, through GF and moldies and countless trolls, and has had far worse threads than the TC one that has made T&P leave

Why do you think it needs to be moderated now?

Does selfmoderation work really well?

OP posts:
Haribosmummy · 15/05/2009 11:34

Self moderation is the way to go, IMHO.

BlingDreaming · 15/05/2009 11:35

No. Why mess with what works? There are moments where people are offended or hurt but that is the nature of an online forum and in most cases, where necessary, those posts can be removed.

MN's strength is it's speed, variety and flexibility. Moderation would destroy that.

Bucharest · 15/05/2009 11:35

No please no.
I love the fact that, by and large, we are trusted enough by HQ not to be total arsewits.
They intervene when called upon to do so...
Kittywise is right about the kissy, hun, fluffery forums, and when people become moderators over there it turns them into weirdy power-crazed obsessives.

TrillianAstra · 15/05/2009 11:36

No. Definitely not. If you have a problem with a thread, a post or a poster you can report them.

It would cost so much. And be so inconvenient if everything had to be read before it went up. We would lose out big time.

Tamarto · 15/05/2009 11:37

Another problem with moderation is, it's difficult to look impartial and people always end up feeling like they are getting a 'raw deal' from the mods.

It fairly often leads to bad feeling, that or pink and fluffy

QuintessentialShadows · 15/05/2009 11:37

I am wondering if self moderation is a very good idea on a smaller site, but mumsnet has grown a lot in recent months. Many new names (which is good) and although we dont see a lot of trolling at the moment (at least I havent seen a lot of trolling) there are many emotionally charged threads that seem like they could do with some "management".

Other large sites have moderators, maybe that is something that could work well here?

Yes we pride ourselves on being self moderated and we have managed so far, but maybe if not now, then soon, it would be wise to consider it?

OP posts:
GrinnyPig · 15/05/2009 11:37

No, I think if it was moderated it would lead to too much fluffy niceness. Things can go a bit far at times but if you think it has then press the report post button.

No I think that self moderation works quite well. There is always the Report Post option and as long as there is someone at MNHQ checking the reports and acting on it if necessary, I think it is OK.

why do you think it's necessary?

I think the report-a-post method works well.

BCNS · 15/05/2009 11:49

No

MarshaBrady · 15/05/2009 11:49

No, the odd post by MNHQ when things need clearing up works well.
