How many MN 'personas' have you ever had?

Norty · 03/05/2005 22:28

There's a another thread talking about how easily people can be deceptive on chat rooms, however most people seem to be saying "oh, but I think I'd spot someone fake", or "but I haven't the time/energy for multiple posts"

It got me wondering, "How many MN personas have people ever had".In other words, how many different MN nicknames have you EVER used?

My personal score is probably well towards 20 - over 5 years... some most regularly, some occasionally, and a few only once....

I don't like changing my name but I have a couple of times .... for the christmas thing obviously (GhostofChristmasPast and HeavenlyGhost) ... I changed my name once because I needed to offload about a row I had with DH and was embarrassed but it was guessed very quickly due to the times I post .... being in NZ it is a bit of a give away really ...
I have one pseudonym up my sleeve for emergencies ....

almost40 · 04/05/2005 02:07

Too many to remember.

snafuhunkersnafumunker · 04/05/2005 07:49

OI! Hunkersnafumunker - outside now!

Cat and football thread was hilarious anyway, even more so now. Deffo fave MN thread.

LGJ · 04/05/2005 08:26

There was a vicious rumour that I may have been very close to Naomi from Milshake on a certain thread

But you will have to ask Daddycool to confirm it or deny it.

throckenholt · 04/05/2005 08:30

2 - this one and a christmas one.

I don't have the spare brain capacity to handle more than one persona

strugstu · 04/05/2005 08:53

do u know i feel so stupid.......... i really felt for joanne23.....and everyone taking the piss.....i must be so gullible.......

some people have a very warped sense of humour or a very dull life

Norty · 04/05/2005 09:28

Morning!

Strugstu - but isn't that one of the issues? what appears 'warped' to one person seems entirely normal to another.
Humour is a very polarising emotion - think about comedy like Monty Python, The Fast Show, or Little Britain - so many people either simply love it or simply loathe it.

I DO agree with Marthamoo - a site like this (or ANY chat forum for that matter) can be simultaneously very attractive to sensitive/ vulnerable people, but then they are also most at risk, and often least able to cope with the wide range of responses & posts.

Having been on MN for over 5 years now, my observation is that there are now so many more people in the vulnerable/sensitive category posting regularly, and although some of the 'old timers' genuinely feel sorry and are sympathetic, they also miss the 'less heavy'/ fun/ silly 'middle england' type stuff which used to be characteristic of then site.
I guess that's why we end up with threads like the recent one about MN cliches.

I wasn't suggesting anyone was stupid/ not intelligent particularly, although I DO worry about some Mn-ers who seem quite happy to post their names, give details about where they live, how old and what their children are called, post pictures of them/their family and publicly announce where they are going/ meeting other MN-ers. I think that is very naive!

Norty - if you 'know' me you'll know I have a thick skin and (I hope) a sense of humour, but

"I think that is very naive!"

well that's an indictment on a an awful lot of mumsnetters!

but of course an opinion you're entitled to express

also longevity doesn't always equal wisdom

SoupDragon · 04/05/2005 09:38

I once counted all the names that came up in the "nickname box" on the member profile thingy. There were over a 100 that belonged to me. In my defense, all but 5 or so were variations on other people's names to mess about and assorted other Clanger names when we were once voting for Head Girl. Then there were Christmas names, a couple of Sensitive Thread names and one Super Secret posting ID I've never used them for Trolling purposes though.

ssd · 04/05/2005 09:39

I've only ever been ssd on here, I'd get too confused otherwise!

BTW the cat and the football thread was really funny, especially QueenEagle and fairyfly!

Marina · 04/05/2005 12:04

Norty, you really have got me thinking now...there aren't that many people on here who have been around for five years
And no, if anyone is even thinking it was me...I'm in the boring-respectable-one-name-for-five-years-just-not-quickwitted-enough-camp.
You had so many of us going!

Tinker · 04/05/2005 12:07

I'm thinking what you're thinking Marina. 5 years? Hmmm?

I've had a few - first one for a few months and then "joke" ones for certain threads (OfficeGirl etc of JF thread)

Norty · 04/05/2005 12:27

Tinker/ Marina - so what are you thinking? (Ha! You sound like the Tory party election slogan "ARe you thinking what we're thinking?"

OP posts:
FLUM · 04/05/2005 12:41

how do you find out what names you've used

i started as butwhatdoiknow but it was too long and felt sorry for people answereing me. so am flum. was flumberrysauce, flummeryflum, skibunnyflummy

I'm sure that is. wouldn't dream of going under a different persona just for effect

Enid · 04/05/2005 12:41

I can't believe that cat thing was a wind up but thank god it was as it was depressing to think there were people out there that were that 'cat precious'

I occasionally change my name if it is somethign or I tend to do variations on ENID for a larf.

who is norty!

Marina · 04/05/2005 12:43

Please do not bracket Tink or me with the Tories, now that really is very Norty indeed
Can't you hear the cogs whirring? I'd have the decency to CAT you with my suspicions though!

Cam · 04/05/2005 12:43

I have always been me - why would I want to pretend to be someone else - Norty you obviously don't feel very confident in what you're saying otherwise you'd be making your point as someone we'd all recognise.

Janh · 04/05/2005 12:44

"nickname box", soupy? where?

Tinker · 04/05/2005 12:45

Don't want to indulge Norty really but there are not that many who have been around that long - longer than me!

WideWebWitch · 04/05/2005 12:46

I've only just started reading this thread and haven't read all of it but sleepjess were you misshooleydooley then? (don't answer if you've answered in the thread, will read it in a mo) Very funny if so! I started off as nameincounty -real ones, obv! - but then realised it wasn't very anonymous, durr! so changed it. I have very occasionally changed name to post something where I don't wnat someone to read something about them but not much. I was weightwatchingwaterwitch too but that's hardly news!

FLUM · 04/05/2005 12:46

so get it out in the open then. who was the wierdo cat lover and the evil football launching neighbour?

Just the one (plus christmas)
but people are changing their names to respond to their own threads?
Is the MN "clique" really just one very complicated person? Do you pay subs for each persona?
Can i resurrect the whos the best mner by voting for myself under diff names
And I thought i was just unpopular but I now see I am Aunt Sally to your Wurzel gummidges

Cam · 04/05/2005 12:52

Looks like all the oldies are going to have to come on here and declare their innocence
